The winner of Group F will be determined on Thursday when the United States takes on Sweden in a battle of two undefeated teams. Each team has won both of its matches, but the United States has the edge based on a massive goal differential. Any sort of result for the Americans would lead to the United States winning the group, leaving Sweden as the runner-up. However, finishing in second place may be preferable as that looks to be an easier draw.
United States vs. Sweden
2019 Women’s World Cup Odds:
The United States have scored more goals than any two teams combined in the tournament to this point. There was never a doubt of the Stars and Stripes losing to either Thailand or Chile, but Sweden will present them with their first real test of the competition.
Everyone knows about the United States’ 13-0 win over Thailand, and following such a dominant victory, Jill Ellis made the decision to completely change up her starting eleven against Chile. There were seven new starters in the lineup, and only goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and center back Abby Dahlkemper played the same positions as they did against Thailand.
The USWNT controlled every facet of the match, but they only won 3-0 on Sunday. Chilean goalkeeper Christiane Endler was named the Player of the Match for her heroics in net, repeatedly shutting the door on the Americans after three goals in the first 35 minutes. Carli Lloyd bagged a brace and set a record for scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches, but she missed a penalty. Julie Ertz added the other goal.
Sweden had far more trouble against Chile. The Swedes were unable to break through against Endler and La Roja until the 83rd minute and only sealed a victory with another goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Kosovare Asllani and Madelen Janogy netted the goals for Sweden in the win.
They had a much easier time against Thailand on Sunday, slotting home five goals in a 5-1 victory. Linda Sembrant, Asllani, Fridolina Rolfo, Lina Hurtig, and Elin Rubensson were the goal scorers for the Blue and Yellow.
Sweden Player to Watch
Asllani is the most dangerous player on Sweden’s roster. She is the only player with two goals at the World Cup so far, and she has 32 goals in 126 career appearances on the national team. Asllani has spent time with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, and the midfielder is constantly probing opposing defenses. She is the player the Americans will have to worry about the most.
United States Player to Watch
Ellis is likely to put her best players in the lineup once again versus Sweden, and Megan Rapinoe could be the X-Factor for the USWNT. Rapinoe is not a primary goal scorer for the US, but she is a great table setter for Alex Morgan and Christen Press. She should be even more dangerous after having some extra rest prior to this match.
United States vs Sweden Betting Prediction
It will be interesting to see how the Americans respond in this match. While they do have a talent advantage on Sweden, there isn’t the same massive gap that there was when the team placed Thailand and Chile. The Swedes will have more possession than the other two teams in Group F, and they will actually present the back line with a few different tests.
I believe the Americans may be caught a little bit off-guard in the first 10 or 15 minutes, but they will adjust and eventually get the win. They are -300 on the three-way line, and that’s the best bet on the board to me. I see them getting a few goals in the second half in a 3-1 win.
