Here is the latest look at Gormley, one of the contenders for the 2017 Belmont Stakes to be run at Belmont Park.
Owner: Mr. & Mrs. Jerome Moss
Trainer: John Shirreffs
Pedigree: Malibu Moon – Race to Urga, by Bernstein
Last Race Result: 9th Place, Kentucky Derby, 5/6/17
Gormley is really hit or miss. He's finished fourth, seventh and ninth when he hasn't hit the board in his career, but when he has hit the board, he's won, including at the Santa Anita Derby.
Gormley was 22 to 1 at the Kentucky Derby. It was a strange price for sure for a horse who won one of the major Kentucky Derby prep races, but it turned out to be a legitimately good line. Gormley was never a contender at the Kentucky Derby even though he was in a decent position throughout the first part of the race.
Gormley figures to be one of the longer shots on the board at the Belmont Stakes. For the moment, he's set at 10 to 1, but we know that he could be longer than that when push comes to shove, especially if this field ends up filling out with a dozen or more contenders.
Gormley Belmont Stakes Analysis
Keep an eye on the jockey situation for Gormley. Victor Espinoza is the only jockey this horse has ever known, and we'll be interested to see if trainer John Shirreffs decides to go in a different direction for Gormley in the Belmont Stakes.
We know that Gormley has the potential to be a great colt. He ran a whopping 102 Beyer Speed Rating at the Sham Stakes in his fourth race, and he was one of the favorites at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, a race that Classic Empire went on to win. You don't win a race like the Santa Anita Derby without being a great horse. But the fact that Gormley was one of the longer shots on the board at the Kentucky Derby was telling, especially since he finished right in the middle of the field. His Beyer in the Derby was just 85, and that's a real concern for sure.
If Gormley is going to be a legitimate contender in the Belmont Stakes, you'd like to think he's going to have to be in a good stalking position. It's tough to get to that point in the Belmont field, but there really isn't much of a choice. We're not all that sure Gormley really has the distance in him, especially not parlayed with the speed to win the "Test of Champions." It's going to be up to Espinoza (or some other jockey) to keep Gormley grounded early in this race. Otherwise, he's never going to be able to hang in there for the whole mile and a half.
We suspect Gormley will end up on the pace at the outset of the race and will end up fading when push comes to shove. He strikes us as a horse who is more set to run at a mile or a mile and an eighth for his career, not these significantly longer races like the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. We suggest looking elsewhere if you're looking for a winner. The best case we see is a spot at the back of the board.
With a maximum of 16 horses accepted into the Belmont Stakes field, there is a significant vetting process to qualify the horses among this group of three-year olds. Horses which finished in the top four at either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes are guaranteed entry into the Belmont Stakes, while the other starters are placed in the field based on earnings in graded stakes races and non-restricted sweepstakes races.
Belmont Stakes post positions and morning line odds for all horses in the field, will be updated until the day of the race.
