FVIB World Championships – One of the oldest and most prestigious volleyball tournaments. This is an indoor tournament that started in 1949. The World Championships is also staged every four years two years either side of the Olympics with the men's competition dominated by Brazil winners of the '02, '06 and '10 competitions. The women's gold medal has been won by Russia for the past two championships, on each occasion they beat the Brazilian national team.
Summer Olympics – The Summer Olympics occur every four years and is one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The top national volleyball teams of each country will compete for world dominance. The Olympics are watched around the world by tons of people and much of the sports betting for volleyball happens here.
World League – Since 1990 this tournament is one of Volleyball’s most prestigious events next to the FVIB. The men’s tournament is called the FIVB World League and the women’s, the FIVB World Grand Prix. Italy and Brazil have won this tournament 8 times each.
Most betting action for this sport will take place during the FVIB World Championships, the Olympics and World League. There are a number of volleyball bets that bettors can make. We have reviewed some of the most common ones below.
Match Betting in Volleyball: Also known as a straight up bet, it’s a simple bet that predicts who will win the match. Depending on your sports book, the wager may use either a decimal or fractional system. The payouts will be better for the underdog as you will see in our example below. Bettors should look at the odds that your sports book offers to see if there is a chance to win some big cash. See our example below for how it works:
Team A – 2/1 or 2:1
Team B – 10/1 or 10:1
In the example above the favourite to win is team A. For every $2 placed you will get a dollar back for the win. If you bet $1 on Team B to win and they do you will receive a payout of 10 to 1 which means $10 for you. It’s always risky for the underdog but as you can see the payoffs are really good.
Point Spread: With this type of wager, the winning volleyball team must beat the spread in order for the bet to pay out. The spread could be set at 40 and the team would have to beat that score for points. Some bettors like this bet because even if their team loses, they don’t as long as the winning team failed to cover the spread. This is how the sports book encourages even betting with these types of wagers.
Point Totals: This is a bet on how many points, total, will be scored between the two volleyball teams. Bettors aren’t betting on the outcome of the match but instead on how many points will be scored. This is also known as an over under bet where you look at what the sportsbook offers and you try to predict if the score will be over or under that total.
