The UFC’s biggest superstar is back. Dana White confirmed that Ronda Rousey would return to action to challenge newly crowned champion Amanda Nunes for the title at UFC 207 in Las Vegas on December 30.
By that time, it will have been just over a years since we last saw Rousey in the octagon. Since losing the title to Holly Holm via a stunning upset knockout, the strap has changed three times in three fights. Could Rousey once again stabilize the division she dominated for years?
The rest of the card is loaded: there are are eight total current or former champions fighting in high stakes bouts. Let’s take a glimpse at what’s in store.
Women’s Bantamweight Championship - UFC Odds - Amanda Nunes +117 - Ronda Rousey -137 , Over/under 1.5 rounds, over +170, under -200
Odds Update: Rousey -160, Nunes +135. Over/Under 1.5 rounds, over +195, under -235
There are just so many questions regarding Rousey’s return. Not only did she demolished, she was humiliated by celebrities, media outlets and countless fans on social media. Such a drastic fall from grace took a major toll on the former champion, as she admitted battling depression and contemplated retirement.
But it would be a serious injustice to ignore her past accomplishments. There is no fighter in MMA history that so thoroughly dominated a division like Rousey. Prior to meeting Holm, Rousey beat all but one of her opponents inside of one round. In fact, nine of her 12 career victories came within the first minute.
With Rousey, it wasn’t a question of whether she would win, but how quickly and easily she would do it. But that aura of invincibility was completely shattered by a head kick heard around the world. Is there any chance she can recapture some of that mojo against Nunes?
Speaking of Nunes, she is not a fighter anybody should overlook. The champion’s fights against Miesha Tate and Sara McMann were stunning displays of violence against premier fighters. It can easily be argued that Nunes is the best Muay Thai striker in the division. She has nine KOs in 12 victories - a distinct outlier in a class not known for early knockouts. Her hand speed and explosive power is no joke.

Cody Garbrandt +177vs. Dominick Cruz -206
Dominick Cruz will defend his title against Cody Garbrandt in a blown-out grudge match. The beef between the two goes bone-deep, with Garbrandt representing a Team Alpha Male camp that Cruz has dominated for years. On paper, it’s a compelling style matchup between the division’s best knockout artist and MMA’s best matador in Cruz.

Cain Velasquez -225 vs. Fabricio Werdum +189 - This fight has been canceled.
Two-time champion Cain Velasquez will get a chance to avenge the worst loss of his career against Fabricio Werdum - and score a title shot in the process. Once projected to be the greatest heavyweight in UFC history, a litany of major injuries and the untimely loss to the Brazilian has faded his luster. Still, he arguably has the highest ceiling of any big man on the roster.
Neil Magny vs. Johny Hendricks
Current odds: Mangy -156, Hendricks +131
Note: Hendricks missed weight, fight is still on
2016 could not have been worse for Johny Hendricks. The former champion got embarassed by Stephen Thompson in February and outhustled by Kelvin Gastelum in July. His stock has never been lower, but he could close out the year on a high note against Neil Magny, a top-10 fighter coming off an upset loss to Lorenz Larkin.
T.J. Dillashaw vs. John Lineker
