Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic (15-2, 11 KOs, 1 SUB) will defend his title against Alistair Overeem (41-14, 18 KOs, 19 SUBs) at UFC 203 on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The main card will be televised on pay-per-view starting 10 p.m. ET.
Part-time firefighter and full-time UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will get to defend his newly won title in his hometown of Cleveland. But he’s got a huge obstacle, literally, in front of him in the form of former Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.
The title match headlines a pay-per-view card that also features former heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum, former WEC champion Urijah Faber, and the long-awaited debut of WWE superstar Phil “CM Punk” Brooks. Here’s what to expect from the night.
Heavyweight Championship - Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem
Opening odds: Miocic -135, Overeem +115
Current odds: Miocic -123, Overeem +103. Over/Under o1.5-130
Result: Miocic wins by KO 4:27 Round 1
Yes, this is a striker vs. striker matchup. And yes, these are two giant men with crushing knockout power. But champion Miocic is much more a pure boxer, a former Golden Gloves champ, while Overeem is a classic Dutch Kickboxer and a former K-1 kickboxing champion. This is a matchup that even a person that doesn’t have the slightest interest in MMA would enjoy.
In the bigger picture, an ongoing theme with the heavyweight division is that no champ in history has been able to defend the belt more than two times. It’s a shocking number for a promotion that’s had stars like Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre and now Demetrious Johnson defend their belts close to 10 or more times. Can Miocic take one step closer to making history, or will we have yet another Baddest Man on the Planet?
Heavyweights - Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne
Opening odds: Werdum -210, Browne +180Current odds: Werdum -200, Browne +170. Over/Under u2.5-144
Result: Werdum wins by UD 29-27,29-27,330-27
Ben Rothwell has suffered a knee injury in training, forcing him out of the Heavyweight co-main event. Travis Browne steps in.
Lightweights - Phil “CM Punk” Brooks vs. Mickey Gall
Opening odds: Gall -325, Punk +265
Current odds: Gall -465, Punk +370, Over/Under u1.5-245
Result: Gall wins by Submission (rear naked choke) Round 1
It’s about damn time CM Punk steps inside the octagon. It’s been over a year since the WWE superstar made a splash by signing a UFC contract, but injuries and general newbie-ness has kept him from actually fighting a non-scripted match where people actually hit each other.
Veteran UFC fighters have been quick to jump all over Punk, considering him a sideshow who doesn’t belong in the octagon, and that puts an even bigger spotlight on a 38-year old former pro wrestler with zero actual fight experience. I would not want to be in that man’s shoes. Especially since his opponent, the young Mickey Gall, actually looks like he could be a decent prospect.
Women’s Bantamweights - Jessica Eye vs. Bethe Correia
Opening odds: Eye -125, Correia +105Current odds: Eye -146, Correia +126, Over/Under o2.5-285
Result: Correia wins by SD 2+-28,28-29,29-28
Correia is best known as that Brazilian chick that told Ronda Rousey not to kill herself, which was an extremely poor choice of words to an opponent whose father committed suicide. She backed up her tough talk by getting knocked out cold in less than a minute, then losing her next fight to Raquel Pennington. She’ll look to stop the losing streak against Jessica Eye, whose lost three straight. It’s a matchup between two strikers that could easily turn into a brawl.
Bantamweights - Urijah Faber vs. Jimmie Rivera
Current odds: Rivera -170, Faber +145, Over/Under o2.5-190
Womens Flyweights - Joanne Calderwood vs. Jessica Andrade
Current odds: Andrade -138, Calderwood +118, Over/Under o2.5-175
Lightweights - Michael McBride vs. Nik LentzCurrent odds: Lentz -445, McBride +350, Over/Under o2.5-170
Middleweights - Caio Magalhaes vs. Brad Tavares
Current odds: Tavares -195, Magalhaes +166, Over/Under o1.5-200
Lightweights - Yancy Medeiros vs. Sean Spencer
Current odds: Medeiros -125, Spencer +105, Over/Under o2.5-150
Lightweights - Drew Dober vs. Jason Gonzales
Current odds: Dober -164, Gonzalez +139
