While horse racing is considered a “fringe” sport among mainstream sports fans for much of the year, the main exception to that is during the Triple Crown.
There’s a reason why the Triple Crown is so highly coveted, and rare. It’s because it’s one of the most difficult accomplishments in sport.
The races that make up the Triple Crown each have their own unique characteristics. This also means that they require different ‘skill sets’ to win. This fact alone makes the Triple Crown a daunting task.
This doesn’t mean you can’t win big on one, two or indeed all of the races.
The Triple Crown of horse racing is like no other wagering option. Held over a five-week period in May and June in the United States each year, the top three-year-olds in training go through a grueling three-race series, starting with the two most exciting minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby or Run for the Roses as it is also called, at historic Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
Contested on the first Saturday of May each year, it is usually the first time the young runners have ever been asked to go a distance of 1-1/4 against a large field of their peers that usually number 20, and only the winner of the Kentucky Derby has a chance to win the Triple Crown, one of the most difficult sporting feats.
The second jewel of the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes, contested two weeks after the Kentucky Derby at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.
The distance of the race is 1 3/16 miles, the shortest of the three Triple Crown races.
The third and final leg of the Triple Crown, is the Belmont Stakes and is the longest, leg of the Triple Crown. The first running of the Belmont Stakes took place at Jerome Park in 1867, before moving to Morris Park in 1890. The race settled in its current home, Belmont Park, in 1905.
The Belmont Stakes, with its 1 1/2 mile distance, has proved to be an endurance test for its three year old runners. Many horses have had their Triple Crown hopes crushed in the Belmont Stakes.
There have been 23 horses that have won the first two jewels of the Triple Crown and failed to win at the Belmont. Two of them, Burgoo King in 1932 and Bold Venture in 1936, didn’t run in New York.
The field for the Kentucky Derby has been whittled down to just 25 contenders, and of the 25, 20 will finally be selected to begin the quest for the elusive Triple Crown.
There are no shortage of opinions and angles when handicapping the Kentucky Derby. With up to 20 horses leaving the starting gate on the First Saturday in May, let our experts help you find good plays and picks for your Kentucky Derby betting.

Horse racing is all year long. There are major stakes that occur at the same time ever year. For example, the Triple Crown starts in May of every year with the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and ends in June, with the Belmont Stakes.
Off track betting on horse races is, unlike other forms of virtual gambling, totes are legit.
