The way the Tennessee Titans ended the year, few expected them to waltz into Arrowhead Stadium and upset the Chiefs. And when they fell behind 21-3 at halftime, even those few became non-believers. But never underestimate what competition does to professional athletes. The Titans stormed back to edge Kansas City for their first playoff victory since the 2003 season and earned a trip to the No. 1 seed New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.
The Titans probably feel like they’re playing with house money after entering the NFL record book. They became just the third team to rally from at least 18 points down to win a playoff game and they’re the first to do it since 1972. They scored more points in the second half of their win over the Chiefs than they did in the entirety of seven regular season games and Marcus Mariota was so good over the final 30 minutes that he even threw a touchdown pass to himself.
While the offense had an awakening, it was sparked by the defense as the team’s completely reversed roles. After giving up 264 yards and 21 points in the first half, the Titans allowed just 61 yards and pitched a shutout in the second half. Whatever Mike Mularkey told his troops at halftime, he better have a better speech lined up for this week with the Patriots standing in the way. Tennessee has lost the last six meetings and the franchise hasn’t won a game in New England since 1993 when it was based in Houston and known as the Oilers.

Titans vs. Patriots NFL Preview: The Titans rallied from a big deficit last week to shock Kansas City, winning 22-21. It was the first playoff win for Tennessee in 14 years. Now the Titans face an even bigger task as they go against the Patriots in Foxboro. The Patriots have been in the news recently because of an ESPN story alleging conflict between owner Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Continue
Wild Card Round: Titans 22, Chiefs 21
ATS Result: Titans +8.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 44
Mariota’s touchdown pass to himself after the ball was tipped by a defender started the ball rolling in the second half. The score cut the deficit to 21-10 and the Titans defense picked up its play. KC recovered a muffed punt deep in Tennessee territory later in the third, but the D clamped down and held the Chiefs to a field goal attempt that missed. Derrick Henry capped the ensuing drive with a 35-yard TD run as part of his 156 for the game to get closer. Mariota tossed the game-winning TD pass to Eric Decker with six minutes left and the Titans stopped KC on downs during its final possession for the outright victory.
Week 17: Titans 15, Jaguars 10
ATS Result: Titans -2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 40
Derrick Henry took a second quarter screen pass 66 yards for a touchdown and Ryan Succop added three field goals as the Titans held off the Jags to clinch a playoff berth. Tennessee’s defense came up big with four takeaways and didn’t allow an offensive touchdown while holding the Jags to only 229 total yards, making the under an easy winner.
Week 16: Rams 27, Titans 23
ATS Result: Titans +5.5
Over/Under Total Result: Over 46
Todd Gurley amassed 276 yards from scrimmage and Jared Goff tossed four scoring passes to lead the Rams to victory. The Titans grabbed a 23-20 lead early in the fourth on Ryan Succop’s third field goal, but the Rams answered right back on Goff’s scoring pass three minutes later. The Titans punted on their next two possessions and the final drive ended with a Mariota incompletion on fourth down, though they covered for the second straight game.
Week 15: 49ers 25, Titans 23
ATS Result: Titans +2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Over 44.5
The Titans battled back from a 16-3 deficit and took the lead following Mariota’s TD pass to Rishard Matthews early in the fourth. But they couldn’t contain Garoppolo, who threw for 381 yards and led the Niners on three straight field goal drives. Tennessee went up 23-22 with 67 seconds left, but the Niners maneuvered into range for Robbie Gould’s game-winning kick as time expired. Playing as road dogs, the Titans covered the spread for their third ATS win in the last four games.
Week 14: Cardinals 12, Titans 7
ATS Result: Cardinals +2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 42
The Titans held the Cards to 261 yards and kept them out of the end zone, but the offense could produce just on touchdown in the ATS loss. Derrick Henry scored the only points of the first half on a 6-yard touchdown run, but the Cards struck for four second half field goals to escape with the win while keeping the score well below the closing total.
Week 13: Titans 24, Texans 13
ATS Result: Titans -7
Over/Under Total Result: Under 42
Facing the Texans without Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt, the outcome was drastically different than the 57-14 loss the Titans suffered earlier in the year. Tennessee trailed 10-0 late in the first half when things finally started clicking. Mariota’s scamper got them on the board and Ryan Succop hit a field goal to tie things at the break. Walker’s touchdown gave the Titans the lead, but LeShaun Sims’ end zone interception late in the fourth saved the game. Henry busted loose for a 75-yard run a few plays later to give the Titans a cover win.
Week 12: Titans 20, Colts 16
ATS Result: Titans -3
Over/Under Total Result: Under 46.5
Murray ran for only nine yards, but the biggest one came in the fourth quarter that gave the Titans the win and cover. They fell behind 16-6 early in the second quarter and hadn’t done much offensively. But they were gifted a turnover deep in Colts territory and started the comeback on a 2-yard pass from Mariota to Delanie Walker. The defense slammed the door and they ran out the clock after Murray’s game-winner.
Week 11: Steelers 41, Titans 17
ATS Result: Steelers -7
Over/Under Total Result: Over 44.5
The Titans hung close for a half and pulled within 16-14 on the first play of the third quarter when Mariota hit Rishard Matthews on a long scoring play. However, the defense wilted giving up three consecutive touchdown drives and Pittsburgh put the game out of reach, sending Tennessee to its second straight ATS loss.
Week 10: Titans 24, Bengals 20
ATS Result: Bengals +4.5
Over/Under Total Result: Over 40.5
The Titans used a big first half to take a 17-13 lead at halftime, but they had to overcome a late deficit to win their fourth straight game. The offense went cold in the second half and a long A.J. Green touchdown reception gave Cincy the lead late. Being shutout over the final two quarters, Mariota drove the team 73 yards, hitting DeMarco Murray with the game-winning TD pass with only 36 seconds left, but the Titans failed to cover the spread.
Week 9: Titans 23, Ravens 20
ATS Result: PUSH Titans -3
Over/Under Total Result: Over 41
It wasn’t the crispest performance by the Titans coming off their bye, but they did enough to slow down Baltimore and used an opportunistic offense to get the win. Tennessee had allowed just a pair of field goals until the middle of the fourth quarter when Baltimore finally broke through. The Ravens last touchdown and PAT with 46 seconds left gave them a push and made winners of over bettors.
Week 8: BYE
Week 7: Titans 12, Browns 9 (OT)
ATS Result: Browns +5.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 42.5
Getting the win is the most important thing and the Titans can address the issues in the off-week. The game of field goals came down to the last one from Succop, who provided the game-winner in overtime. It wasn’t pretty for either side, but an ugly win counts just the same. The Titans never trailed and swapped field goals until the extra session, allowing for the ATS loss.
Week 6: Titans 36, Colts 22
ATS Result: Titans -7
Over/Under Total Result: Over 46.5
The Titans didn’t score their first touchdown until the fourth quarter when they broke the game open. Five Ryan Succop field goals kept them in it until DeMarco Murray hit paydirt early in the final frame. The Colts tied it before Mariota launched a scoring strike to Taywan Taylor. A 72-yard sprint by Henry supplied the final margin and made Titans’ backers happy as they covered the 7-point spread with that score.
Week 5: Dolphins 16, Titans 10
ATS Result: Dolphins PK
Over/Under Total Result: Under 41.5
The defense did all it could to get a win but Cassel and the offense didn’t get the memo. The Titans held Miami to 178 total yards, but a Cassel fumble on a sack, that everybody on the field except for one Miami player thought was a fumble, resulted in a touchdown. The offense struggled again under Cassel and managed just 188 yards making the under an easy winner.
Week 4: Texans 57, Titans 14
ATS Result: Texans +2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Over 43.5
It was a bad start for Mariota and things just snowballed out of control. A pick ended the first drive and the Titans were down 14-0 midway through the first quarter. Mariota tried to keep his team in the game, running for a pair of scores, but the offense couldn’t get going and the defense was hung out to dry defending 78 plays and nearly 40 minutes. Tennessee saw its streak of 30 point games end, but they still cashed the over for a third straight game.
Week 3: Titans 33, Seahawks 27
ATS Result: Titans -2
Over/Under Total Result: Over 42
Another impressive outing got the Titans a big victory and a cover for the second straight week. Tennessee owned the trenches and did what it does best – run the football. Mariota also chipped in and the Titans reached the 30-point mark and cashed the over for the second time in as many games.
Week 2: Titans 37, Jaguars at 16
ATS Result: Titans -1
Over/Under Total Result: Over 42
The Titans rolled to an easy cover win by scoring 30 straight points after falling behind 3-0. It wasn’t the start they wanted, but it ended being an impressive rout. Tennessee scored 17 points in the third quarter and 31 in the second half to cash the over. The running game was solid and the use of two backs was a factor with Henry rushing for a career-high after Murray tweaked his hamstring. The defense forced three turnovers and limited Jacksonville to 310 yards with nearly half that total coming on the Jags final two drives after the outcome had been decided.
Week 1: Raiders 26, Titans 16
ATS Result: Raiders +2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 49.5
As good as the Titans are at running the football they struggled to score in the red zone against the Raiders, twice settling for field goals after getting inside the 20-yard line. Those additional points would have allowed the teams to reach the total, but the Titans still came up short as 2.5-point favorite. They fell behind early after failing to recover an onside kick to open the game and never had the lead, though the game was tied twice in the first half.
Preseason Record: 1-3
ATS Record: 1-3
Over/Under Total Record: 1-3
Tennessee did everything but win the game when they met the Raiders last season. The Titans flexed their muscles in the trenches running for 181 yards and they kept Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack out of the backfield. They also shut down Oakland’s passing attack, holding Carr to just 249 yards in the air. But three costly turnovers and failure to produce in the red zone was their downfall in a 17-10 loss. After an uneventful preseason, the Titans need to turn it on against one of the AFC’s best teams.
