Defending Champions: Pittsburgh Penguins
The 82 games it takes to whittle the NHL field from 30 teams down to 16 is intense as it is. But it feels like every single season, the real fun begins in April when the NHL playoffs kick off. There is no such thing as an easy series, and every single game turns out to be a super grind. Games are decided on a knife's edge, and no matter if you're a No. 1 seed or the last team that sneaks into the show, you've got a show if you can catch some fire.
But the best teams this year in the NHL are clearly the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks, and there's a reason why they're the overwhelming favorites to win it all at +350 and +500 respectively.
The Caps have been here before. They've won the Presidents' Trophy in the past, and they've turned up short time and time again, usually against teams that went on to win the East at minimum and often won the whole enchilada. But if not now, then when? Alexander Ovechkin's best years have to be winding down at some point, but he has the best surrounding cast he's ever had, not the least of which is Braden Holtby, who is now a seasoned vet and coming off of a regular season in which he had a 2.08 GAA.
The Blackhawks have that swagger of a championship team once again. You know the names. Kane, Toews, Keith, Hossa, Seabrook, Rozsival, Oduya, Crawford... They're all back and ready for another go at the Cup. But keep an eye on the newest member of this amazing squad, Artemi Panarin, who almost quietly logged 31 goals and 43 assists this season.
Looking for a team playing well at the right time with the pieces in place to make a run? Check out the St. Louis Blues. They're going to have a tough opening round series against the Minnesota Wild, but whomever comes out of that series is going to have a real shot at winning the West. St. Louis has the far nicer odds at +1800 and shouldn't be forgotten.
Ken Hitchcock was fired on February 1, and since that point, St. Louis has been among the best teams in the league. It's a little more animated offensively than the Hitchcock clubs who have failed this time of year in the past, and that's a good thing. Vladimir Tarasenko was massive in the postseason last year, and he figures to have to score at least a dozen times in the playoffs if the Blues have aspirations of truly winning the Cup.
In the East, it's going to be trendy to go with the defending Cup holders, the Pittsburgh Penguins. But at a price of +750, we can definitely find better excuses to bet on other teams. There was a point the Columbus Blue Jackets were the toast of the town in the NHL. They, of course, were run down by both the Pens and the Caps, but 108 points is awfully impressive, particularly in that division. They've got one of the top goalies in the league in Sergei Bobrovsky, and they've got a lot of those glue guys like Jack Johnson, Ryan Murray, Brandon Saad and Nick Foligno who can take them to the next level. But do they have stars? It's going to take a lot to get this 14 to 1 pup to the Promised Land, especially against a hellacious schedule that is sure to include the Rangers, Capitals and perhaps Canadians just to get to the Stanley Cup Finals. But the Jackets could be up for the challenge, and just has been the case all year long, they aren't backing down from the fight.

NHL Stanley Cup History and Facts
The Stanley Cup is the final series of postseason games of the National Hockey League.
The Stanley Cup is won by winning four of seven games played between the champions of the Western and Eastern Conferences. The Stanley Cup is the trophy awarded to the team who wins the Finals.
That team's members are inscribed on the cup itself, and the team keeps the cup until another team wins the finals, at the earliest the following year.
The Stanley Cup is also known as "the Cup", "the Holy Grail" or ironically, "Lord Stanley's Mug".
The trophy itself was donated in 1892 by the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley, to the top-ranked amateur hockey team in Canada. With various league expansions and consolidations, the Stanley Cup has become the oldest sports trophy in North America and the highest ice hockey honor in the world.
The Stanley Cup Finals games are played at the respective home arenas of the two final teams competing for the championship. The team with the better regular season record receives the home ice advantage in the Stanley Cup Finals, and hosts games 1, 2, 5, and 7, whereas the team without that advantage hosts games 3, 4, and 6.

Stanley Cup 2013 Champions - Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago had a 3-2 victory in Game 6, as they went on to claim the Stanley Cup for the second time in four seasons.
Blackhawks stage late rally to win Stanley Cup. Bryan Bickell and David Bolland scored 17 seconds apart in the final 1:16 of the contest to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead to take home the 2013 Stanley Cup.
Also the Blackhowks, became the first team in league history to win a Cup-clinching game by overcome a one-goal deficit in the final two minutes of regulation.

Forty-five years of frustration were wiped away in one magical night. The Los Angeles Kings are finally true hockey royalty after being crowned Stanley Cup champions for the first time ever.
Los Angeles romped to a 6-1 series-clinching victory over the stunned New Jersey Devils. With about a minute left in regulation, the Kings players started jumping up and down on their bench in anticipation, and soon captain Dustin Brown was doing a star turn at centre ice with the Stanley Cup above his head.
