The Tour de France will start stage 8 on Saturday July 11th, 2015, from Rennes to Mur de Bretagne, a ride of 179km, with a grueling final climb at Mur de Bretagne. The route, along the byways of Cotes-d'Armor, to the centre of Brittany (Kreiz Breizh), will be a severe challenge of endurance.
Tour de France Stage 8 Preview: Rennes - Mur de Bretagne, 181.5 km
The terrain today might look straightforward – apart from the third-category climb at the finish, there’s only one other categorised climb, mid-stage. But the road will be constantly dipping and rising, especially in the second half.
The stage comes at the end of a very hard opening phase of the Tour. The yellow jersey contenders face the impossible choice and maximising time gains on the climb, while trying to save themselves for the team time trial the next day.
Halfway through the stage Col du Mont Bel-Air lays waiting. Not a hurdle to be feared, totalling 1.5 kilometres at 5,7%. The stage ends on the short and steep Mur de Bretagne, a climb bringing sweet memories to Cadel Evans.
The toughest part of the 2 kilometres climb is at the bottom with a 1 kilometres section rising by 9.5 to 10.1%. Then the climb flattens out and the last 500 metres are a false flat.
