When: Wednesday July 8, 2015
Where: Arras Communauté Urbaine to Amiens Métropole
The 2015 Tour de France winds its way from Arras in Pas-de-Calais to Amiens in Picardy, the region of France which, along with Belgium, saw particularly fierce fighting during the First World War.
As a result, there are a number of memorial sites in the area to interest students of history.
Tour de France 2015 route stage 5: Arras – Amiens
The landscape around here is flat and exposed, crossing from the Pas de Calais department to the Somme, with the route twisting and turning so much, any wind will play havoc with the dynamics of the peloton.
This stage should be the first proper sprinters’ stage, giving us our first glimpse of the fastmen in the throes of a frenetic bunched-up gallop.
There aren’t any notable climbs. But if you look closely at the map, you will see that though there are only 70 kilometers between Arras and Amiens, ASO has planned a 189km route between the two cities. Under these circumstances, it’s not easy to organize a chase behind a breakaway, especially if the weather is bad.
In short, this is a stage where ambushes are likely; it is by no means certain that a sprinter will triumph.
