While every season is different and you truly never know what each team will look like one year from the next, we can’t help but scratch our heads about some of the Monday Night Football betting matchups in store for us throughout the 2018 regular season.
Why are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers getting a sniff of the Monday night spotlight in Week 3? Sure, they’re facing the Steelers who will be rammed down our throats this season, but couldn’t they have picked another Week 3 matchup? How about the “Battle of Los Angeles” between the Chargers and Rams? The Bolts possess the third shortest odds to win the AFC ( +633 ) yet find themselves on national TV once. I guess schedule makers don’t look at the NFL betting odds before mapping out the season.
Do we really need to take in the Patriots Week 8 trip to Buffalo? Seriously, how does this matchup warrant being a standalone game? The Bills have dropped six straight at home to New England and nine of the last 10. They’re 2-7-1 against the spread in those matchups! If you seriously think Buffalo is going to build off last year’s surprising campaign, I’ve got some real estate to sell you in the city of Detroit!
Enough whining; there are some solid MNF matchups to make mention of. The Week 4 tilt between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead should deliver. KC has won and covered each of the last five skirmishes between these AFC West rivals, so you can bet your bottom dollar Vance Joseph has his men ready to go to war in that one.
Jimmy G squaring off against Aaron Rodgers on the “Frozen Tundra” in Week 6 should be worth the price of admission. San Fran had taken four straight ( 3-0-1 ATS ) before falling 17-3 as 7.5 point home dogs in the franchise’s last meeting back in 2015. San Fran went 5-2 against the spread as a road underdog last season, while the Cheeseheads covered three of four as home chalk with a healthy Rodgers under center. Something will have to give in this crucial NFC clash.
Other notable matchups against the Monday Night Football betting lines include the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans locking horns in what could amount to being the matchup that decides the AFC South in Week 12.
The AFC South showdown in Carolina Week 15 between the Saints and Panthers could be jam-packed with playoff ramifications with both clubs finishing No. 1 and No. 2 in the NFC South standings a short season ago. The Raiders bookend their MNF appearances with a showing in the final telecast of the season Week 16 when they host the division rival Chiefs. KC has dominated the recent rivalry by winning eight of the last 10 ( 7-3 ATS ), so Jon Gruden should be in true “Chucky” form for this one!
ESPN will air 17 games in prime time during the coveted Monday night time slot, kicking things off with a Week 1 doubleheader.
Denver Broncos vs. Oakland Raiders New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers, O.co Coliseum
Monday, December 24, 8:15 p.m. ET ( ESPN )
Opening Line: Denver -3, 45
Preview: With games like Pittsburgh at New Orleans, Houston at Philadelphia, Atlanta at Carolina and Kansas City at Seattle on the Week 16 docket at NFL sportsbooks, you can’t help but wonder what the schedule makers were sniffing this past offseason to install the meeting between the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders as the final Monday Night Football clash of the year. Seriously, WTF?! Be that as it may, let’s put the game under the microscope and see where we can attack it from a player’s prop perspective to make the end results even more beneficial and exciting. The broadcast team for ESPN’s Monday Night Football remains mostly the same outside of the addition of Sean McDonough, who’ll be taking over Mike Tirico’s position in the booth.
Alongside McDonough, the broadcast team includes: Chris Berman, Trent Dilfer and Jon Gruden in the booth with Lindsay Czarniak and Lisa Salters on the sidelines.
The San Francisco 49ers have the most Monday Night Football wins of any team, winning their 47th such game with a 20-3 victory over Minnesota last September. Dallas is second with 44 wins. The two teams, however, have winning percentages of .642 and .579 all-time on Monday. Both are good, but neither quite as strong as the Seahawks who, at 22-8, have the best winning percentage at .733.
The 49ers will get a chance to inch closer to that percentage and add to their leading total in the season’s opening week as they close out the Week 1 schedule with a showdown against the newly-relocated Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams are one of 14 different teams sub-.500 on Monday night, but they’re nowhere near as bad as the Falcons. Atlanta’s had a tough go on Monday Night Football. They did beat the Eagles, covering the spread in the process on September 14, 2015, and have now covered the spread in three straight Monday night games.
