Introduced to the viewing public the year of the NFL-AFL merger, Monday Night Football has been a staple of the league’s schedule for nearly half a century. The program was one of the longest running on network television until ESPN took over airing MNF in 2006.
The final game of the week continues to attract viewers in droves as fantasy football players pray big weeks from their remaining players get them over the top while bettors look to get that extra payout to close out the week with a win.
Gamblers Palace is here to help you accomplish that latter goal. With the NFL Odds, spreads and injury information to give you the upper hand, allowing you to secure that last little bit of extra cash for the NFL betting weekend.
Last year, bettors that banked on the underdogs on Monday were very successful. For those betting on the totals, the under dominated early in the season before the over made a bit of a run at the end.
With no Thursday night game and Sunday being Christmas Eve, the league has altered the schedule for Week 16 and will gift-wrap a Christmas Day double-header with playoff implications and seedings surrounding both.
The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their grip on the No. 1 seed in the AFC with last week’s loss to the Patriots and now they need the Pats to slip up. The Steelers also need to win after having their eight-game winning streak snapped by the defending champs. It was a frustrating loss in more ways for Pittsburgh, who saw the league’s leading receiver Antonio Brown go down with an injury, taking Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite target off the field. There are still plenty of offensive weapons and we could see Martavis Bryant have more of an impact with the offense.
Offense isn’t the issue with the Steelers right now. It’s the state of the defense, which hasn’t looked the same since the loss of Ryan Shazier. In two games since Shazier’s season ended with a back injury, the Steelers have allowed 65 points and 773 yards. Those numbers should improve against a Houston Texans squad that is playing out the string with third-team quarterback T.J. Yates. Houston is all too familiar with season-ending injuries to key players, having lost J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus, Deshaun Watson and D’Onta Forman to derail a season that had so much promise two months ago.
The nightcap on ESPN features the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Oakland Raiders. Philly cleared its first hurdle after the loss of Carson Wentz, locking up a first-round bye with a 34-29 win over the Giants last week. And Nick Foles looked comfortable taking over, tossing four touchdown passes with no interceptions. The Eagles can secure home field advantage with a win over the Raiders and they’ll look to shore up some defensive issues as well. The Eagles were burned by one of the worst offensive teams in the league, giving up over 500 yards and 29 points to the Giants.
The Raiders, meanwhile, are still alive in the AFC playoff picture, but their chances are slim. Still, there’s a chance and something to play for. The Raiders were the trendy offseason pick to win the AFC West and compete for a conference title, but things haven’t gone according to plan. They’ve lost two straight games and even changes among the coaching staff haven’t helped. It looks like Derek Carr will have to wait another year before playing in his first postseason game.

The broadcast team for ESPN’s Monday Night Football remains mostly the same outside of the addition of Sean McDonough, who’ll be taking over Mike Tirico’s position in the booth.
Alongside McDonough, the broadcast team includes: Chris Berman, Trent Dilfer and Jon Gruden in the booth with Lindsay Czarniak and Lisa Salters on the sidelines.
The San Francisco 49ers have the most Monday Night Football wins of any team, winning their 47th such game with a 20-3 victory over Minnesota last September. Dallas is second with 44 wins. The two teams, however, have winning percentages of .642 and .579 all-time on Monday. Both are good, but neither quite as strong as the Seahawks who, at 22-8, have the best winning percentage at .733.
The 49ers will get a chance to inch closer to that percentage and add to their leading total in the season’s opening week as they close out the Week 1 schedule with a showdown against the newly-relocated Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams are one of 14 different teams sub-.500 on Monday night, but they’re nowhere near as bad as the Falcons. Atlanta’s had a tough go on Monday Night Football. They did beat the Eagles, covering the spread in the process on September 14, 2015, and have now covered the spread in three straight Monday night games.
