Introduced to the viewing public the year of the NFL-AFL merger, Monday Night Football has been a staple of the league’s schedule for nearly half a century. The program was one of the longest running on network television until ESPN took over airing MNF in 2006.
The final game of the week continues to attract viewers in droves as fantasy football players pray big weeks from their remaining players get them over the top while bettors look to get that extra payout to close out the week with a win.
Gamblers Palace is here to help you accomplish that latter goal. With the NFL Odds, spreads and injury information to give you the upper hand, allowing you to secure that last little bit of extra cash for the NFL betting weekend.
Last year, bettors that banked on the underdogs on Monday were very successful. For those betting on the totals, the under dominated early in the season before the over made a bit of a run at the end.
It’s a battle between two of the top teams in the NFC when the Atlanta Falcons visit the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. Both teams were favored to win their respective divisions this year and they enter this matchup looking to make up ground. It’s also a rematch from last season’s divisional round playoff game, won by the Falcons on their way to the Super Bowl.
A loss by either side won’t put them out of the playoff race, but it certainly won’t help. The Falcons have two teams to leapfrog in the NFC South and they trail the first-place Saints by two games. The Seahawks are just a game back of the Rams in the West and they’ve already beaten the division leaders earlier this season. But Seattle will have to navigate the remainder of the season without Richard Sherman, who sustained an Achilles injury in last Thursday’s win over Arizona. His absence in the Seahawks secondary could open things up Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.
Injuries play a big part in every NFL season and the Seahawks are dealing with a few that could impact the remainder of their season. Not only is Sherman done for the year, they’ve had to deal with the loss of safety Earl Thomas and recently acquired Duane Brown, who would have the assignment of keeping Adrian Clayborn out of the backfield. Clayborn entered last Sunday’s game with 22.5 sacks in his seven-year career, including two this season. He took down Dak Prescott six times, eclipsing his total from 13 games last season. You can bet Seattle’s training staff is working hard treating Brown’s sore ankle.
The Seahawks do have history on their side and there will be the revenge factor. They will be looking for payback after getting bounced from last season’s playoffs with a 34-20 drubbing in Georgia and they’ve gone 23-8 all time on Monday night, which is the best record in the NFL. The teams have split their last four meetings with both Atlanta wins coming in the postseason. They also knocked off the Seahawks during the 2012 season. And the games are typically high-scoring affairs which makes them more exciting. The teams have combined to score at least 50 points in four of the last five get-togethers.
Location: CenturyLink Field, 8:30 p.m. ET ( ESPN )
Opening Line: Seahawks -3, O/U 45
Prediction: The Seattle Seahawks have been favored by at least six points in 15 straight games played here at CenturyLink Field. They'll be favored against the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, but it surely won't be by six points in a crucial Monday Night Football tilt that could have massive playoff implications in the NFC. The broadcast team for ESPN’s Monday Night Football remains mostly the same outside of the addition of Sean McDonough, who’ll be taking over Mike Tirico’s position in the booth.
Alongside McDonough, the broadcast team includes: Chris Berman, Trent Dilfer and Jon Gruden in the booth with Lindsay Czarniak and Lisa Salters on the sidelines.
The San Francisco 49ers have the most Monday Night Football wins of any team, winning their 47th such game with a 20-3 victory over Minnesota last September. Dallas is second with 44 wins. The two teams, however, have winning percentages of .642 and .579 all-time on Monday. Both are good, but neither quite as strong as the Seahawks who, at 22-8, have the best winning percentage at .733.
The 49ers will get a chance to inch closer to that percentage and add to their leading total in the season’s opening week as they close out the Week 1 schedule with a showdown against the newly-relocated Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams are one of 14 different teams sub-.500 on Monday night, but they’re nowhere near as bad as the Falcons. Atlanta’s had a tough go on Monday Night Football. They did beat the Eagles, covering the spread in the process on September 14, 2015, and have now covered the spread in three straight Monday night games.
