Jimmy Garoppolo has set himself up for a big payday this offseason and the San Francisco 49ers will have to fork over plenty of dough if they want to see what he can do when the games actually mean something. Garoppolo has yet to lose a game as a starter in his career and he has the fan base in Santa Clara excited about the future of the franchise.
There is one caveat, however. Of the five teams Garoppolo started against this season, only one was decent and had something to play for at the time of the meeting. That doesn’t take away what Jimmy G accomplished however. He threw for 1,542 yards completing 67 percent of his passes and, more importantly, the Niners won. The season was over at the midway point after the Niners went winless in their first nine and all pressure was relieved by the time he arrived in a deal with the Patriots.
After several seasons of struggles at the quarterback spot, it appears as though Garoppolo has solidified the position. He’s made believers out of his teammates, too, with Carlos Hyde proclaiming last week that the Niners will win next season’s Super Bowl. That’s a bold statement in regards to a player who has played just 23 games with 272 pass attempts in his four-year career. Even if things don’t work out next season and the Niners aren’t Super Bowl champs, there’s been enough buzz in the Bay Area for Jed York to jack ticket prices up again, and isn’t that what matters?

Week 17: 49ers 34, Rams 13
ATS Result: 49ers -6
Over/Under Total Result: Over 43
Garoppolo padded his stats against the Rams JV team, throwing for 292 yards and two touchdowns in the easy victory. The Niners were the favorite for only the second time this season and they easily covered the spread by keeping the Rams out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. At that time the lead ballooned to 34-6 in what amounted to a glorified exhibition for the home team.
Week 16: 49ers 44, Jaguars 33
ATS Result: 49ers +4
Over/Under Total Result: Over 43
The Niners got a big game from Garoppolo and their defense to stun the Jaguars with the outright victory. After coughing up a 16-point lead and falling behind by a field goal, Garoppolo tossed a pair of scoring passes in a 21-point spurt to take a big lead in the fourth quarter. They Jags made a run with touchdowns 27 seconds apart, but Matt Breida closed it out with a long run in the final minutes.
Week 15: 49ers 25, Titans 23
ATS Result: Titans +2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Over 44.5
Garoppolo moved the team and Robbie Gould converted the field goals to get the Niners their third straight victory. Gould’s sixth three-pointer of the day came moments after the Titans had taken a 23-22 lead and Garoppolo moved the team 48 yards into field goal range. Playing as a favorite for the first time, the Niners failed to cover the 2.5-point spread, but the field goal-fest allowed the over to cash for the first time in four games.
Week 14: 49ers 26, Texans 16
ATS Result: 49ers +1
Over/Under Total Result: Under 45.5
While other teams are dealing with the loss of quarterbacks, the Niners are on the opposite end. Garoppolo threw for a career-best 334 yards and a touchdown to deliver San Fran its second straight cover win. Garoppolo’s scoring pass to Garrett Celek early in the third broke a tie and the Niners converted a Texans fourth-quarter turnover into an additional three-points for the final margin, which fell below the closing total.
Week 13: 49ers 15, Bears 14
ATS Result: 49ers +2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 42
The Niners controlled the game by possessing the ball for nearly 39 minutes, but they failed to reach the end zone and needed five Gould field goals to eke out the win, the last coming in the closing moments for the outright victory. The much anticipated starting debut of Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t produce a touchdown, but it brought a win, and that’s the most important thing.
Week 12: Seahawks 24, 49ers 13
ATS Result: Seahawks -7
Over/Under Total Result: Under 45
The Niners intercepted a pass on the first offensive play, but their struggles to move the ball were just beginning. They had six punts and a pick of their own in their first seven possessions. However, they closed the gap to 7-6 with a pair of Robbie Gould field goals, but Seattle scored the next 17 points to put the game away, handing the Niners another ATS loss. Few people remained when Garoppolo entered late in the fourth, but they witnessed his first touchdown pass with the team.
Week 11: BYE
Week 10: 49ers 31, Giants 21
ATS Result: 49ers +3
Over/Under Total Result: Over 41.5
The Niners took a lead for the first time in six games when Robbie Gould hit a field goal on the opening drive and instead of settling for three-pointers most of the game, they actually scored touchdowns – four of them – to cash the over. Beathard threw for two scores and ran for another, the big one coming with 28 seconds left in the first half to give the Niners a 17-13 lead. While the Giants scuffled, Frisco added on for the outright win to snap a three-game ATS slide.
Week 9: Cardinals 20, 49ers 10
ATS Result: Cardinals -2.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 39
When you have the 31st-ranked scoring defense, you have to put up more than 10 points. For the third straight game the Niners barely reached double-figures and for the third straight game they lost SU and ATS. This one was closer than the previous two, but the Niners couldn’t contain Adrian Peterson and Drew Stanton tossed a pair of scores. The Niners got within 14-10 in the third quarter, but punted twice, Beathard threw a pick and they turned it over twice on downs in their last five possessions.
Week 8: Eagles 33, 49ers 10
ATS Result: Eagles -13
Over/Under Total Result: Over 45
Despite another anemic offensive effort, the Niners hung close until the Eagles opened it up with two touchdowns 47 seconds apart late in the first half. They gave up a touchdown pass with less than two minutes left and three plays later Beathard threw a pick-six and the 17-point hole was too deep to crawl out of. The Niners did little offensively until late in the game and they failed to cover the 13-point spread, dropping a second straight ATS.
Week 7: Cowboys, 40, 49ers 10
ATS Result: Cowboys -6.5
Over/Under Total Result: Over 48
Giving up over 500 yards and losing the turnover battle 3-0 is a recipe for a blowout, and that’s exactly what the Niners got. The game actually started well enough with the Niners forcing a three-and-out on Dallas’ first possession, but a fumble on the punt return was cashed in three plays later and the Niners never recovered. Beathard scored his first career touchdown with 6:14 left to make over bettors happy.
Week 6: Redskins 26, 49ers 24
ATS Result: 49ers +12
Over/Under Total Result: Over 46
The pain of another close loss has to be excruciating. For the fifth consecutive game the Niners lost by a field goal or less, keeping them out of the win column but making their backers happy. They covered the 12-point spread and are 4-1 ATS in those five games. Beathard made an appearance and nearly brought the team back, throwing his first touchdown pass with under two minutes remaining to cash the over. The Niners got the ball back, but Beathard tossed a pick on a desperation fourth-down play.
Week 5: Colts 26, 49ers 23 (OT)
ATS Result: Colts -1
Over/Under Total Result: Over 43.5
Hoyer got the Niners back in the game and sent it to OT with a pair of fourth quarter scoring passes. But he and the rest of the offense were AWOL the rest of the game. Robbie Gould is the team’s best weapon, but he never had a chance in the extra session after an interception got the Niners the football. Having a first down at midfield, the Niners moved backwards and were forced to punt, giving the Colts a chance at the win, and they took it
Week 4: Cardinals 18, 49ers 15 (OT)
ATS Result: 49ers +6
Over/Under Total Result: Under 43
It was another close loss for the Niners and that made their backers happy with a third straight cover win. But their inability to score a touchdown for the third time in four outings proved costly when the Cards stole one in overtime. Frisco took the lead in OT with a three on the first possession, giving the Cards one chance and a little over two minutes. The defense went into prevent mode and the Cards struck for six, putting an end to an ugly afternoon.
Week 3: Rams 41, 49ers 39
ATS Result: 49ers +3
Over/Under Total Result: Over 40.5
The Niners never led, but they actually had a chance to win the game after scoring a late touchdown to pull within two points. They missed the two-point conversion for the tie, but recovered the on-side kick. However, Hoyer fired three incompletions and was sacked on fourth down to end the drama. The Niners did cover the spread for the second straight game and easily cashed the over for the first time.
Week 2: Seahawks 12, 49ers 9
ATS Result: 49ers +13.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 42
It’s hard to win games and cash the over if you can’t score touchdowns and that’s where the Niners are. They failed to hit paydirt for the second straight game, using three field goals to account for their point total. They ran just 48 plays and possessed the ball for 23 minutes, leaving the defense hanging. Eventually the unit crumbled and the Niners couldn’t get the upset, though they did cover.
Week 1: Panthers 23, 49ers 3
ATS Result: Panthers -4.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 45.5
Even the offensive prowess of Shanahan couldn’t coax a touchdown out of this group. There were some concerns regarding the quarterback position with Brian Hoyer taking over as the starter. He’s had decent numbers at several of his stops, but winning has always been difficult for the veteran. He failed to get the Niners into the end zone Sunday and they managed just a field goal. S.F. played a stingy style of defense, but the unit collapsed after the offense didn’t offer any help.
Preseason Record: 2-2
ATS Record: 3-1
Over/Under Total Record: 3-1
Where to begin with this team? The Niners were dead last in points and yards allowed per game and they finished 31st in yards gained. They lost to Chicago and the Jets, they dropped nine games by double figures and they went just 5-11 ATS. There is no place to go but up for this team, it just might take some time for the elevator to hit the top floor.
