It was a tale of two seasons for the San Francisco 49ers in Kyle Shanahan’s first go round as head coach last season. We’ll call it BG and AC. BG would signify before Garoppolo and AC or course means After Garoppolo. Before getting traded for, the Niners managed just one win in their first 11 tries. Once Jimmy G was given the reins, San Francisco closed the year 5-0 straight up and 4-1 against the spread with the lone defeat coming by way of just half a point.
With that, it comes as no surprise to see the 49ers getting a ton of interest on the preseason betting markets. San Fran only managed six wins a season ago, yet finds itself installed just 20-1 underdogs to win Super Bowl LIII! What a difference a quarterback makes, huh?! The betting markets are also forecasting a three game improvement in their overall win total from a season ago with heavy juice riding the over of 7.5.
Before getting too ahead of ourselves, I think we need to pump the brakes on all the 49ers hype. Jimmy G is a stud, no doubt. However, opposing teams, especially within the division, will now have ample time to break down some game film on the young phenom. That wasn’t the case last season. With the opposition now having a better idea of what to expect, it will be interesting to see how he responds. With all the money John Lynch threw at him this past offseason, he better do a good job of it!
Richard Sherman at one point in time was one of the best shut down corners in the game. Father time and injuries no longer make that the case. While his addition could prove to be crucial form an experience standpoint, he’s way past dominating opposing offenses at this point in his career. His impact will be more about setting the tone and helping the younger players on the defensive side of the ball find their way.
Lastly and most important, the schedule is brutal! Over the course of the first seven weeks, the 49ers have to go to the Vikings, Chiefs, Chargers and Packers. They also have home games against the Lions, Cardinals and Rams. Have fun with that! The middle portion of the schedule lightens up a bit, but the final month finds them hosting the Broncos, Seahawks and Bears before closing the year out in the Coliseum against the Rams. While San Francisco is on the up and up and will be a fun team to watch for a number of years moving forward, the betting markets are being blinded by their love for Jimmy G and the overrated moves made this past offseason.
This is a team that went 6-10 versus the linemakers last season with 67 percent of those covers coming over the last five weeks of the season. It takes more than just a quarterback to turn a team into a Super Bowl contender in just one season. Especially for a team with a roster that still has a number of glaring holes on both sides of the ball heading into the second year of the Shanahan regime.
