The 142 Preakness Stakes is restricted to only 14 Preakness Stakes runners and will run on Saturday, May 20, 2017, for the second leg of the Triple Crown.
Here is the latest look at Royal Mo, one of the contenders for the 2017 Preakness Stakes to be run at Pimlico Race Course.
Owner: Mr. & Mrs. Jerome Moss
Trainer: John Shirreffs
Pedigree: Uncle Mo – Royal Irish Lass, by Saint Ballado
Last Race Result: 3rd Place, Santa Anita Derby, 4/8/17
If Royal Mo really is going to go off the board at around 8 to 1 as he is lined at the moment, we're going to have some questions. The foal of Uncle Mo was 12 to 1 at the Santa Anita Derby and 7 to 1 at the Rebel Stakes, and he finished third and ninth in those two races respectively. Now, against a better field in a better race on a bigger stage, he's going to be +800? That seems a little suspect to us. That said, all of these horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby? We know what they can do now at the big boy Triple Crown level. Royal Mo is a big, fat question mark, and that's why bettors are going to take some shine to him.
What the heck type of horse is Royal Mo anyway? His breeding suggests that he shouldn't have all that much in the way of speed, but in the two races that he won (his third maiden offering and the Robert B. Lewis Stakes), he won wire-to-wire. His stalking races were his two shoddy graded stakes race efforts, while the one time he tried running from a deeper closing position, he finagled his way up to second best in his second ever maiden offering.
So here we are completely confounded. John Shirreffs, though a good trainer, is far from world class, yet the breeding is outstanding here. The workouts don't show us a heck of a lot, especially after cruising six furlongs in an as average as average gets 1:13 flat at Santa Anita before shipping off to Churchill Downs as an alternate for the Kentucky Derby.
Then of course, there's the question as to who Royal Mo really has beaten. He took care of Sonneteer is one of his maiden races – what else is new there since Sonneteer is now 0-for-11 in his career – and he beat Irap, the 18th place finisher at the Kentucky Derby in the Robert B. Lewis. Needless to say, there's nothing to be all that fond of here.
So why do early bettors seem to be flocking to Royal Mo? For one, he's a horse who is always in the discussion at the ends of races. He's hit the board all but once in his career, and for as bad as the Rebel Stakes was at Oaklawn Park, he was much better at the Santa Anita Derby when he finished third.
The fact of the matter though, is that the Santa Anita Derby was a real boon for Royal Mo. Sure, he finished third, but he was gamely the entire way and flat out lost a whip battle at the end. If he didn't have the far outside post and didn't ultimately end up having to run an outside race the entire way, there's a real question if he would have had enough on that day to beat out Gormley and Battle of Midway to claim his place in the Derby.
Thus, we bring back the idea of early speed. Gary Stevens hasn't shied away from running at the head of the pack at the Preakness Stakes before, and this is a good opportunity to do so once again. If Stevens can figure out how to get Royal Mo to the head of the pack in this one from an inside post, perhaps he can ultimately pull off another upset.
With a maximum of 14 horses accepted into the Preakness Stakes field, there is a significant vetting process to qualify the horses among this group of three-year olds. Horses which finish in the Top 5 at the Kentucky Derby are automatically eligible, while the remaining slots are awarded based on career earnings in both graded stakes races and restricted races.
