The first month of the season is in the books. You’ve probably gotten real comfy with the bartender at your favorite watering hole and have a group of guys you meet up with to root your favorite teams on.
But have you been making money taking in all the action? If not, you’d be best served reading what our esteemed group of writers has to say about the NFL betting lines for Week 5 here at Gamblers Palace. Our betting picks cashed at a 58 percent clip a season ago, and the best part about that is all their weekly NFL picks are free of charge!
Here’s the live odds and our analysis for every big game on the Week 5 NFL odds board.
Some of the things that have happened this year in the NFL are flat out insane. Here's just a sampling of some of the crazy events we've seen, strictly on the team level:
-The Patriots should already have three losses at home and are fortunate to be 1-2 in games against the Chiefs, Texans and Panthers.
-The Rams are leading the league in scoring -- by a lot!
-The Giants are 0-4 after making the playoffs a season ago and are seriously talking about firing Ben McAdoo.
-The Jets, a team with an over/under of just 3.5 wins this season, already is 2-2 (the same 2-2 as New England!).
-The Chargers have probably had more road fans in attendance at their home games than home fans. And they're 0-4.
-The Chiefs are the last undefeated team in the NFL.
And that's just at the quarter pole of the season!
Now we head into Week 5, a place where we have some real dog games and some awesome affairs that could help shape the rest of the season.
The Browns -- whom we didn't even mention might be even worse than last season -- have already been favored once this season on the road against Indy. Now, they're favored again at home against the Jets. Toss in games between the 49ers and Colts and Chargers and Giants, and you've got three really bad teams that are going to find their way to a victory this week.
On the flip side, though, we've got some real doozies, starting with the Thursday night offering between the Patriots and Buccaneers. Tampa would love nothing more than to stick New England with a third defeat on the young season while boosting its own playoff chances. This could be the crowning moment in the young career of Jameis Winston as he plays against one of the men he idolized as a child in Tom Brady.
Though Dallas and Green Bay will take all of the headlines in the 4 p.m. ET hour, the game we're really watching closely is that duel between the Seahawks and Rams at the Coliseum. As we mentioned before, Los Angeles has the NFL's top offense at the moment thanks to the play of Todd Gurley and the coaching of Sean McVey. We suppose that Jared Goff deserves some credit too, but we'll believe in him more if he can make some throws down the field against the "Legion of Boom" this week instead of just dinking and dunking his way to yardage.
The game of the week? That's the Sunday nighter between the Chiefs and Texans. These two teams both felt like they needed franchise quarterbacks this year and coughed up two first-round selections to take their man. Patrick Mahomes is nowhere near playing. Deshaun Watson feels like he's already won Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in just three and a half games.
The week will conclude with the Chicago Bears hosting the Minnesota Vikings in a Monday Night football matchup that will help shake out the NFC North race.
New England Patriots at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Raymond James Stadium - 8:25 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Patriots -4, O/U 54
Preview: Through four weeks of play, it’s become painfully apparent that the New England Patriots are nowhere near as good as the team that came back against the Atlanta Falcons to win the Super Bowl. After falling to the Panthers at home on Sunday a week removed from surviving against the Texans, the Pats head into this Week 5 kick-off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on shaky ground. The Bucs would love nothing more than to land another body blow on the defending champs. Continue...
Los Angeles Chargers at New York Giants, MetLife Stadium - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Giants -3, O/U 43.5
Preview: A battle of the defeated is set to go down in Week 5 when Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers invade the Big Apple looking to add to the misery of the New York Giants. The Chargers have become synonymous with losing tough games over the years, while the GMEN have failed to live up to their lofty preseason expectations in what was expected to be one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. The good news here is that one of these teams won’t have a goose egg in the win column come the game’s conclusion. Continue...
Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals, Paul Brown Stadium - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Bengals -1, O/U 38.5
Preview: At 3-1, the Buffalo Bills are the surprising leaders of the AFC East after going into Atlanta and shocking the Falcons last week. After taking down the Broncos the week prior, Sean McDermott’s squad is ripe for a letdown after getting out to a perfect 4-0 start against the spread. The Cincinnati Bengals tasted victory for the first time last week in a dominant effort at Cleveland. Marvin Lewis’s squad will be out to build upon that momentum in Week 5. Continue...
New York Jets at Cleveland Browns, FirstEnergy Stadium - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Browns -1, O/U 39.5
Preview: The Cleveland Browns already went off the board favored for the first time in years earlier this season at Indianapolis. That game turned into an abomination that embarrassed linemakers. Hue Jackson’s squad is now favored at home for the first time since December of 2015, and they’ll be out to put forth a much better effort in Week 5 when they take on a surprising 2-2 New York Jets team that’s scary close to already surpassing its 4.5 season win total. Continue...
Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers, Heinz Field - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Steelers -8.5, O/U 44.5
Preview: The Pittsburgh Steelers return home to the comforts of Heinz Field in Week 5 knowing full well they’ll have to bring their “A” game to the ball yard to get the best of what will no doubt be an ornery Jacksonville Jaguars outfit after dropping an embarrassing 23-20 overtime decision to the Jets last week. This matchup pits two sackmeister defenses against one another, so Blake Bortles and Ben Roethlisberger best have their heads on a swivel. Continue...
Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins, Hard Rock Stadium - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Titans -2.5
Preview: Both the Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins enter this crucial Week 5 tilt with their tails between their legs. The former got beaten in just about every way imaginable in a 57-14 beat down by the division rival Texans, while the latter failed to get off the plane for their brawl in London with the New Orleans Saints. The Jay Cutler experiment hasn’t gotten out to a good start, but Adam Gase’s offense could recover here against the Titans Swiss cheese defense. Continue...
San Francisco 49ers at Indianapolis Colts, Lucas Oil Stadium - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Colts -1.5, O/U 43
Preview: Two teams that figure to finish up in the bottom half of the league standings in the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts will engage in some gridiron warfare in Week 5 when the teams duke it out for the first time since 2013. The visitors will be out to snag their first win of the season after falling in the desert to the division rival Cardinals in overtime, while the Colts return home licking their wounds from a beat down on Sunday Night Football at the hands of Seattle. Continue...
Arizona Cardinals at Philadelphia Eagles, Lincoln Financial Field - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Eagles -6, O/U 45.5
Preview: One of the best bets in the league is set to square off against one of the worst in Week 5 when the Arizona Cardinals invade the City of Brotherly Love to tango with a Philadelphia Eagles outfit that currently sits atop the NFC East standings all by their lonesome. The Cards find themselves in a major letdown spot after winning their second overtime game against the 49ers, while the Eagles return home confident looking to add to their already impressive resume. Continue...
Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions, Ford Field - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Lions -3, O/U 43.5
Preview: The Carolina Panthers played to one of the more surprising results last week when they went into Gillette Stadium and toppled the reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots 33-30 as 9-point underdogs. They once again find themselves dogged on the road in Week 5, but this time, Cam Newton and company will be going up against the formidable defense of the Detroit Lions. Jim Caldwell’s squad will be looking to get back into the win column at home after the refs stole one from them last time against the Falcons. Continue...
Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum - 4:05 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Rams -1, O/U 46
Preview: The Los Angeles Rams have been the biggest surprise in football through the first four weeks of the regular season. Sean McVay has revitalized the franchise immediately instilling a killer mentality into the offense that’s allowed for the defense to give up its fair share of points yet still see the team come out victorious. A huge test awaits in Week 5 against the division rival Seahawks who seemed to get their groove back in a beat down of the Colts on Sunday Night Football. Continue...
Baltimore Ravens at Oakland Raiders, Oakland Coliseum - 4:05 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Raiders PK, O/U 40
Preview: The Baltimore Ravens were the toast of the league through the first two weeks of the season after allowing a grand total of 10 points. The excitement from the pair of wins has tempered out in a big way since with John Harbaugh’s squad getting outscored 70-16 and the offense having all kinds of issues putting points on the board. Another stiff test awaits in Week 5 when the Oakland Raiders return home to the Black Hole down a key component looking to get back on track. Continue...
Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium - 4:25 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Cowboys -2.5, O/U 53.5
Preview: In their two wins to date, the Dallas Cowboys have looked dominant taking it to both the Giants and Cardinals to cover the spread. In their two defeats, they were manhandled with the defense having no shot of limiting what either the Broncos are Rams wanted to do. The defense faces another stiff test in this Week 5 revenge bout with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers who ended their surprise campaign of a year ago in the playoffs. Continue...
Kansas City Chiefs at Houston Texans, NRG Stadium - 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
Opening Line: Texans PK, O/U 47
Preview: A pair of exciting rookies will take to the gridiron on Sunday Night Football when Kareem Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs lock horns with Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans. The Chiefs remain the lone undefeated in the AFC after toppling Washington on Monday night, while the Texans pulled even with an impressive romp of the division rival Titans. Houston put an end to the Chiefs recent dominance of this rivalry last year by coming up with the 19-12 win in a similarly lined matchup. Continue...
Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears, Soldier Field - 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Vikings -3
Preview: The Minnesota Vikings have been a marked team by the injury bug for a couple seasons now. It’s been one nasty loss after another for this cursed franchise. They’ll look to overcome yet another drastic blow when they head to Soldier Field to do battle with the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. A new era is being ushered into the Windy City with the Mitchell Trubisky era set to kick off in front of a nationally televised audience. Continue...
