We're coming down to the wire of the 2017 NFL season, and there's still so much left to decide. Four of the eight division titles are still up for grabs, and there are tremendous NFL Wild Card games going on in both conferences. There are several teams hoping that Santa Claus leaves them a playoff spot in their stockings.
The two Saturday games this week are mere appetizers for the main course. The Ravens shouldn't have a problem moving within one win of a playoff berth at the expense of the Colts, and with the Packers on the verge of elimination from the playoffs, the best they can do is spoil Minnesota's chance at the No. 1 seed.
But the real challenges will boil over on Christmas Eve.
The most important affair of the bunch is the bout between the Falcons and Saints. Assuming that Atlanta beats Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football, this game could end up being huge on multiple fronts. New Orleans still control its own destiny in the NFC South, but two losses to end the year, and the Saints could miss the playoffs entirely. Virtually the same could be said for the Falcons. Win out, and Atlanta could get all the way up to No. 2. Lose this game, and the path just to get into the playoffs is murky at best.
Carolina shouldn't theoretically have any problems with Tampa, and that could setup a showdown in Week 17 between the Falcons and Panthers that could decide a ton in both the NFC Wild Card race and the NFC South.
The Wild Card picture in the AFC has suddenly gotten more confusing than what we have in the NFC.
Buffalo controls its own destiny right now, but it has to travel to New England on Christmas Eve. If that game is lost, destiny will go into the hands of the Titans. Tennessee, though, has to play against the red hot Rams and is a huge underdog at home. If the Titans and Bills both lose, the Chargers will be right there to get back into the fray a week after feeling completely lost after effectively losing the AFC West to the Chiefs.
Four straight home teams have won on Christmas Day, and that's good news for the Texans and Eagles. Houston hasn't had much to be thankful for this year, but an upset of the Steelers would probably go a long way towards assuring that Bill O'Brien is retained for 2018.
The Eagles could wrap up the No. 1 seed if things break their way and they take care of business against the Raiders.
Indianapolis Colts at Baltimore Ravens - 4:30 p.m. ET (NFL Network)
Opening Line: Ravens -13.5
Preview: The Baltimore Ravens are two wins away from locking up a playoff spot in the AFC. They can quite lock up a playoff spot for Christmas, but they can come darn near to doing so if they can beat the Indianapolis Colts to kick off Week 16 on Saturday afternoon. Continue...
Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers - 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
Opening Line: Check Back Later
Preview: The Green Bay Packers are in need of a Christmas miracle. They're going to need the Falcons to lose on Monday Night Football to Tampa Bay just to keep their season alive, and they're going to need to follow that up with a win over the NFC North champion Minnesota Vikings on Saturday to kick off Week 17.
In actuality, Green Bay's season is as good as over with at this point. The Vikes have far more to play for in their quest for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Continue...
Detroit Lions at Cincinnati Bengals - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Lions -3.5, O/U 43.5
Preview: The news has already broken the Marvin Lewis isn't going to be returning to the Cincinnati Bengals next season, thus ending the second-longest active coaching tenure in the NFL.
The Bengals surely didn't look like they cared to win one more game for their head coach last week against Minnesota. We'll see if more desire is going to be apparent when the Detroit Lions come to town in Week 16. Continue...
Los Angeles Chargers at New York Jets - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Chargers -7, O/U 42.5
Preview: Todd Bowles has probably done a better job with the New York Jets than he's going to get credit for. He's been given horrid teams to try to manage over the course of the last few years, and he hasn't been given a competent quarterback to work with for any period of time.
There's a good chance that Bowles' final home game as the coach of the Jets will come on Christmas Eve against the Los Angeles Chargers. Continue...
Los Angeles Rams at Tennessee Titans - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Rams -7, O/U 49
Preview: The Los Angeles Rams made a massive statement last weekend when they blew out the Seahawks at CenturyLink Field. The victory all but assured the NFC West title, and it kept them in a position where they could still get all the way up to the top seed in the NFC.
Still, the Tennessee Titans are playing for their lives at this point, and this isn't going to be an easy penultimate game of the season in Week 16. Continue...
Cleveland Browns at Chicago Bears - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Bears -7, O/U 38.5
Preview: For all of the great football that gets played at the end of the NFL season, there are bound to be a couple stinkers as well. The Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears are playing in what will surely be the least-meaningful game of the 2017 NFL season, but hey, at least it gives the Browns a realistic chance to snare win No. 1 on the season. Continue...
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Panthers -9.5
Preview: You'll have to excuse the Carolina Panthers if they're a bit busy watching the scoreboard during their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16. Just as much of the Panthers' postseason fate will be decided around the rest of the NFC as much as it will be in Charlotte with one of the worst teams in the conference coming to town. Continue...
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints - 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Saints -5.5
Preview: The NFC South is up for grabs at the moment with all of the top three teams still fighting for playoff positioning. Both the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons control their own destiny to win this division, and this Week 16 tussle between the two will serve as a de facto elimination game for either team, dropping them solely into the Wild Card discussion in the NFC. Continue...
Denver Broncos at Washington Redskins - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Redskins -4, O/U 42
Preview: There aren't many games that don't mean a darn thing in Week 16 of the NFL season, but the fates of the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos have already been sealed. The storyline in this game could be as good as it gets, though. Could the Broncos be playing against the man who will become the face of their franchise in a few short months? Kirk Cousins is going somewhere in the offseason, and Mile High is a logical destination. Continue...
Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Chiefs -10, O/U 45
Preview: The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of winning the AFC West. They can clinch the division and a home game in Wild Card weekend if they can beat the recently-eliminated Miami Dolphins in one of the more intriguing Week 16 duels. Continue...
Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots - 1 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Patriots -13, O/U 47
Preview: The coast seems to be clear for the New England Patriots in their quest to earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC. They just have to win their last two games of the season, and the road to the Super Bowl is going to go through Foxboro.
But the Buffalo Bills have had a history of being a bit of a thorn in the side of the Pats in these games at Gillette Stadium, and this one is far from in the bag with the visitors playing for their playoff lives. Continue...
Jacksonville Jaguars at San Francisco 49ers - 4:05 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Jaguars -5.5, O/U 42.5
Preview: At the outset of the season, the Week 16 duel between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the San Francisco 49ers looked like a complete and utter dud.
Instead, the Jags have won the AFC South and could still finish as the No. 1 seed in the AFC, and the Niners are one of the hottest teams in the NFC. What we now have is one of the most-intriguing matchups of the week. Continue...
New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals - 4:25 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Cardinals -4.5, O/U 40.5
Preview: The New York Giants showed some life last week against one of the best teams in the NFL, pushing the Eagles from start to finish. Was that a sign of good things to come over the course of the last couple weeks of the year? Or was that the last gasp the Giants had in their 2017 season?
For our money, their duel against the Arizona Cardinals is the toughest game to handicap on the Week 16 odds. Continue...
Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys - 4:25 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Cowboys -2.5
Preview: Both the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks are on the outside of the NFC playoff picture at the moment. There's a chance that both could be on the verge of elimination by the time they take the field on Sunday for their duel against each other, but even if they're both still alive heading into "Big D," the loser of this one will surely watch their playoff dreams come to an end. Continue...
Pittsburgh Steelers at Houston Texans - 4:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
Opening Line: Steelers -10
Preview: Christmas Day isn't one that is generally dominated by the NFL, but this year, the league is playing two duels while you gather around your trees. In the first affair, the Pittsburgh Steelers will look to get off the mat after last week's crushing loss to the Patriots against the seemingly hapless Houston Texans. Continue...
Oakland Raiders at Philadelphia Eagles - 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Eagles -8
Preview: The Philadelphia Eagles are hoping to unwrap the present of all presents on Christmas night. A win over the Oakland Raiders, and the gift they'll be able to give their fans is home field advantage throughout the playoffs in the NFC. Continue...
