The Los Angeles Rams are one of many newbies in the NFC playoff hunt and they’re getting all kinds of recognition for their outstanding season. Five teams that didn’t reach the postseason last year are currently holding a playoff spot. The only holdover is the Seattle Seahawks, and they aren’t ready to give up their position. In fact, the Seahawks are nipping at the heels of the Rams for first-place in the NFC West, just one game behind with a Week 15 showdown in Seattle looming.
The Rams have been a feel-good story, ending years of incompetence by posting their first winning record in 14 seasons. But they aren’t guaranteed a playoff spot in a crowded conference and the remaining schedule still has some monster games on it. The Rams did pass a big test last week by taking care of business in Arizona. That game, sandwiched between matchups with the Saints and the Eagles this week, could have been the old trap game. But the Rams did what they had to in order to maintain their one-game lead. Following their game with Philadelphia, the Rams head to Seattle and Tennessee before finishing up with the Niners.
It appears as though the Seahawks have recovered from the loss of several defensive leaders. After giving up 34 points in a loss to Atlanta a few weeks ago, many were writing them off. But they responded with strong defensive efforts in wins over San Francisco and Philadelphia and they appear to be hitting their stride. The Legion of Boom is likely over with Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Cliff Avril out for the year, but the Seahawks have some familiar names that can still wreak havoc. They also have Russell Wilson, who should be considered for the league MVP. They have a stiff test against the Jags this week, but since Wilson was drafted in 2012, the Seahawks are 20-5 in regular season games played in December and January.
We finally got the first Niners start for Jimmy Garoppolo, and while the game was similar to many the team has played this year, the outcome was much different. The Niners didn’t score a touchdown, but Garoppolo calmly directed the offense and led the team to five field goals, which were enough to beat the offensively-challenged Bears. The win hurt their draft position, but Garoppolo has added a level of excitement to the offense that we haven’t seen in years.

The Seattle Seahawks 2016 season came to a resounding halt versus the red-hot Atlanta Falcons.
Head Coach Pete Carroll summed up the season perfectly, “We never found the consistency of our execution throughout the course of the year, for a variety of reasons.” Carroll went on to tell 710 ESPN Seattle, “We were good enough to win a division, we were good enough to win enough games to get there and all of that, but we never got our roll going.” Continue
The Arizona Cardinals made it to the NFC Championship game in 2015 but took a step back a season ago, falling to 7-8-1 and missing the playoffs. Quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald both contemplated retirement in the offseason, so it seems as if the championship window is closing with those two players as main cogs. The Cardinals had a lot of turnover on the defensive side of the ball but talent remains. This is a team that can bounce back, although key veterans must stay healthy and perform. Continue
The Los Angeles Rams don’t have high expectations in 2017, as steady progress would be a welcome sight even if it doesn’t result in a bunch of wins. Los Angeles is young at several positions and may have one of the worst offenses in the NFL this season.
While the team has low expectations, there are a couple of key pieces that will be watched closely. Quarterback Jared Goff and running back Todd Gurley have yet to break out in the NFL and they hope to show that they are deserving of their high draft picks in 2017. Continue
The San Francisco 49ers finished the 2016 season undefeated against the Los Angeles Rams. Unfortunately for Trent Baalke and coach Chip Kelly, who were both fired at the beginning of this week, the ‘Niners went winless against the rest of the NFL. The team lacked talent and what talent the team did have got injured, especially on the defensive side of the ball. NaVorro Bowman, Eric Reid and Arik Amsted all suffered season ending injuries, with Bowman’s having the biggest impact as he was the heart and soul of the defense. Continue
