The Philadelphia Eagles may be the best team in the NFC and Ezekiel Elliott won his appeal – again – and will play this week in San Francisco. But those aren’t the biggest storylines in the NFC East. The biggest news from within the division comes from the Giants, who ended their skid and broke through with a win last week, doing so without any wide receivers and a starting defensive back who was asked to leave the team for insubordination.
The Giants were not just a favorite to win the division at the beginning of the year they were among the top picks to win the Super Bowl. Things went sideways quickly and those same “experts” wondered if New York would win a game after Odell Beckham, Brandon Marshall and Dwayne Harris were lost for the year. Then there was some friction between Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Ben McAdoo that led to DRC’s suspension. There was no way the Giants could beat the Broncos on the road.
The Eagles got off to a hot start last season before faltering. It doesn’t appear that’s going to happen this year. Carson Wentz had another strong game and the Eagles rank among the top-10 in every major offensive statistical category. The defense has looked pretty good too, and they’re about to get cornerback Ronald Darby back in the lineup to bolster what looks like the only weakness on the club. After playing four of their first six on the road, the Eagles open a three-game homestand against the Redskins on Monday Night Football.
It’s a must-win for the Skins, who can’t afford to fall further behind in the standings. The Cowboys are also facing a must-win after losing two straight contests before their bye. Elliott should play against the Niners on Sunday after his legal team got another temporary restraining order to block his six-game suspension. As we saw with Tom Brady during the Deflategate fiasco, the league won’t give up and Zeke will have to pay at some point. The Boys have already matched their loss total from last season and have a better conference record than only the Niners, Bears and Giants.

It’s not easy for a team to lose their star quarterback and still win 13 games, but that was the case for the Dallas Cowboys a year ago. Quarterback Dak Prescott filled in admirably and Zeke Elliott gave the running game a shot in the arm. Dallas returns those two players and many other standouts on offense.
The Cowboys’ playoff run ended earlier than expected a season ago but the pieces are in place for another impressive season. Dallas is the favorite to win the NFC East and is expected to be one of the chief contenders for the Super Bowl. Continue
The New York Giants went on a defensive spending spree before the 2016 season and it helped turn around the team’s fortunes. Now they are hoping the addition of a key player on offense will keep it rolling.
Wide receiver Brandon Marshall comes to town to team with Odell Beckham, Jr. as the main targets for quarterback Eli Manning. If the Giants’ offense picks it up in 2017 this team can really make a push for the NFC East championship, even with the Dallas Cowboys in the division. Continue
With a disappointing end to the season, the Washington Redskins have to erase the ‘what ifs’ and ‘could have beens,’ and look towards next season. The team needs to revamp the defense. Josh Norman was a big get prior to this season, however, he was the only defensive back on the Redskins that graded-out as above average per Pro Football Focus. With the Redskins ‘3-4’ scheme the team needs to get defensive backs that are sure tacklers and solid at the point of attack. The team also needs a play-making safety that allows the corners to play with confidence. Also, the pass rush, Chris Baker is a free-agent and maybe the only interior lineman worth keeping. And did we mention the linebackers, particularly the middle linebacker. Mason Foster can collect tackles but he is sorely lacking speed and flexibility in the middle. Continue
The Philadelphia Eagles were up and down a year ago but had some moments where they looked like a really good team. WIth Carson Wentz ready for his second season under center, the team believes it is on track to push for a postseason berth.
The Eagles have a good defense and added star wideout Alshon Jeffery to the fold to give Wentz an electric weapon on the outside. While the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants are seen as the class of the NFC East, don’t forget about this punchy underdog.
Philadelphia lost several close games a season ago and with a little more luck the playoffs could be a legitimate aspiration in 2017. Continue
