The Eagles won their first Super Bowl title last season with a backup quarterback, so it’s not a complete surprise that they opened as the favorite to repeat as the 2018 NFC East champion. Given the recent history in the wacky division, it might be a good bet to lay down some coin on the New York Giants. Sure, they’re coming off a last-place finish with a franchise-worst 13 losses, but the past three division winners all finished in last the season before.
There hasn’t been a repeat division winner since the Eagles took four straight from 2001 to 2004 and they appear to be the class of the division. Carson Wentz was poised to win the MVP after tearing up the league. However, he went down in a Week 13 win over the Rams and all seemed lost. Nick Foles stepped in and led Philly to a stunning Super Bowl win over New England, making the NFC East the only division to house four Super Bowl winners.
Philadelphia Eagles -170
Dallas Cowboys +300
New York Giants +730
Washington Redskins +800
The biggest concern for the Eagles as they try to become the first to win back-to-back NFC East titles in over a decade is the health of Wentz. His 2017 season ended just short of the finish line with a mangled knee on the Coliseum turf in Los Angeles. At the time Wentz was leading the NFL with 33 touchdown passes and directing the league’s highest scoring offense. It could have been a devastating loss if not for Foles, who took over and led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory.
It looks like Wentz will be ready once the season begins and Foles is still around, giving the Eagles some comfort at the most demanding position. But the two will be working with a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Mike Groh is the new OC after Frank Reich accepted the head job with the Colts and Press Taylor will handle the QBs. There shouldn’t be any significant changes as both were in other roles last season, but that’s the price of success. Continue
The Cowboys figure to be Philly’s biggest threat to the division title in 2018 and they are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 9-7 finish last year. The Boys missed the postseason and that can be blamed on a three-game losing streak in November where they were outscored 92-22. After tearing up the league in his rookie season, Dak Prescott regressed in 2017 and the loss of Ezekiel Elliott to a suspension didn’t help.
Zeke is all in for 2018, but Prescott will have some different targets to throw to following the departures of Jason Witten and Dez Bryant. Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith are two menacing linebackers and DeMarcus Lawrence, who’s 14.5 sacks were the second-most, should get help up front from Taco Charlton. Continue
The G-Men hit the reset button after a disastrous last season which saw them lose a franchise record 13 games. Pat Shurmur was brought in after turning the fortunes of Case Keenum around last season in Minnesota. Two years ago the Giants invested heavily on the defensive side of the football and the result was immediate. Now the offense gets a facelift, not only with the coaching staff, but through the draft and free agency. No. 2 overall pick Saquon Barkely will impact the running game and Nate Solder will help up front. New defensive coordinator James Bettcher will attempt to turnaround a unit that ranked next to last in passing yards and total yards allowed per game last season. Continue
If the Skins could stay healthy they might be a factor in the division race. The team was ravaged last season and we never did see the expected starting lineup on the field. And now the Skins lost their biggest offensive weapon when Kirk Cousins defected to Minnesota as a free agent. Jay Gruden snatched a good one to replace him in Alex Smith, who put together solid seasons in Kansas City before getting pushed out of the way for Patrick Mahomes. Smith may not have the numbers Cousins had, but he got his team to the postseason four of the last five years, including the last three. And that’s something Cousins couldn’t do. Continue
