When Kevin Sumlin came to College Station back in 2012, he and Johnny Manziel took the Aggies on a magical ride that ended with an 11-2 record, an AT&T Cotton Bowl championship and a Heisman Trophy for Manziel. That season revived a fan base that had seen a lot of mediocrity over the decade before.
And it’s not that the Aggies have been bad in the four years since that season, it just hasn’t been great and good just won’t win conference titles in the SEC.
The Aggies have finished in the middle of the pack in the SEC the last few years, averaging 8-9 wins overall. They enter the season with some key pieces, but quite a few question marks as Sumlin looks to replicate the magic of his debut.
The Texas A&M Aggies flirted with the SEC title and National championship in the Kevin Sumlin days. That simply wasn’t good enough. Why flirt when you can go all the way? That’s the point of view the University took this past offseason when it sent a Brinks truck over to Jimbo Fisher’s house and dumped $75 million on his front lawn making his decision to bolt Tallahassee all the more easy. With a big time coach that’s won a national title now at the helm, expectations have run rampant in College Station.
It’s unfair to think Fisher will be able to lead this team to the promised land right from the get go, but a steady climb towards doing so is expected. That said, the Aggies aren’t being looked upon kindly by the betting markets entering the 2018 college football betting season with under 7.5 wins garnering most of the preseason attention. Not shocking considering the Aggies went 7-6 last year and lost their bowl game matchup against a solid Wake Forest team.
Texas A&M once again looks to be sound on the offensive side of the ball. The unit ranked out better than average in just about every pertinent statistical category last season, and gets a bulk of those players back for another go of it in 2018. Fisher is going to have to pick a quarterback between Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel and run with it. He’s got a veteran offensive line to protect either as well as open up holes for stud running back Trayveon Williams who went for just under 800 yards in his sophomore campaign. Throw Jhmaon Ausbon into the mix, and the pieces are in place for this offense to thrive under Fisher’s pro-style attack.
A defense that surrendered over 400 yards and 30 points per game last season will have a new ringleader. Mike Elko was hired away from Notre Dame to rebuild the Aggies defense. Specifically a secondary that was torched for nearly 238 yards per game. The front seven will once again be a menace with Daylon Mack and Kingsley Keke back to wreak havoc on the interior of the line. The linebacker corps is also in good shape with Otaro Alaka and Tyrel Dodson returning. The success or lack thereof will all come down to the secondary handling its business. With the pass rush the unit will exhibit, this stop unit could become an SEC force if it can figure out a way to limit opposing pass attacks.
A look at A&M’s schedule finds them taking on both Clemson and Alabama in their first four games. Highly unattractive, and likely one of the main reasons why the Aggies season win total is getting so much action on the under. The schedule lightens up immediately after, and then closes out with tough games at Auburn and at home against LSU. Not the greatest lineup of opponents in year one of the Fisher era, but not the worst either.
You’re likely better off taking a Bic to the money you plan to put down on the Aggies winning the National Championship ( +12500 ) or SEC ( +3003 ). It’s likely also a stretch to think they have any shot of dethroning Alabama in the SEC West ( +1500 ). However, you’re going to see a more consistent product take the field that’s building the foundation for what’s no doubt going to be an SEC powerhouse in the years to come. Fisher and his coaching staff are simply too good not to allow that to happen. It will take time however. Until then, look for marked improvement on both sides of the ball that should lead the Aggies to a successful campaign in 2018 that once again ends with a trip to a decent bowl game.
