The opportunity that is here for the North Carolina Tar Heels is almost unprecedented. Teams don't get the chance to play in the Final Four in consecutive years all that often, and reaching the National Championship Game in successive years hasn't been done in a decade. Alas, the North Carolina Tar Heels have broken the mold and powered their way into the title game for a second straight season. Will they be able to overcome the heartbreak from a campaign ago when Kris Jenkins won the title at the buzzer for Villanova?
This Gonzaga Bulldogs team that is going to be on the other end of the court has an awful similar feel to Villanova. The Zags just keep finding ways to win games, and they've got those lethal big men in the center of the court who can keep UNC off balance as the Wildcats did in last year's title game. Is there a Jenkins-esque hero coming for the Zags? Nigel Goss-Williams would be the man to deliver the dagger if history repeated itself. He's scored 23 points in each of his last two games, and he's absolutely on fire heading into the biggest game of his career.
If there's an issue with Gonzaga though, it's that the team really hasn't played a heck of a lot en route to the title game. The Bulldogs avoided Arizona in the West Region thanks to Xavier and didn't have to deal with either Duke or Villanova out of the East in the Final Four thanks to South Carolina. Sure, you've just got to win the games that are on your bracket when push comes to shove, but this is a game like none other the Bulldogs have had to play this season.
The Tar Heels were pushed for sure in the Final Four against Oregon, particularly when they found themselves down by eight just before halftime. But in very North Carolina-esque fashion, it went on a big run, outscoring the Ducks 17-6 to end the first half, and it never looked back from there.
The Heels have opened as 2.5-point favorites in the title game alongside a total of 151.
#1 Gonzaga vs. #1 North Carolina, University of Phoenix Stadium - 9 p.m. ET ( CBS )
Opening Line: North Carolina -2.5, O/U 151
Preview: The Gonzaga Bulldogs are looking to make history and win their first ever college basketball national title. Gonzaga has only lost once all season long, but unlike prior seasons, that’s not because of a lack of quality opponents. This team has continually proved itself and deserves to be here despite what the doubters may say. In order to win it all, they are going to have to defeat one of the teams that many considered the favorite to grab the title this season, the North Carolina Tar Heels. Continue...
