Sportswriters around the nation rejoiced when the LSU Tigers announced that they were going to take the interim off of Ed Orgeron’s title at the end of last season. Coach O is a reporter’s dream and continues the recent LSU tradition of hiring quirky coaches. He is an excellent recruiter and is a player’s coach through and through. However, expectations are high in Baton Rouge and he will soon find himself feeling the same flames as his predecessor if he doesn’t produce results.
Exactly what kind of team does Ed Orgeron have at his disposal entering the 2018 college football betting season? We’ll find out right off the bat with the LSU Tigers set to square off against the Miami Hurricanes in the 2018 Advocare Classic in Week 1, and then travel to Auburn to battle the Tigers in an enormous SEC West tussle a couple weeks later. If LSU gets out to a 1-2 start, they can all but kiss their CFP hopes and dreams goodbye.
Oddsmakers are betting against Orgeron and his troops this season. LSU hasn’t won fewer than eight games dating all the way back to 1999, yet the Bayou Bengals sport a season win total of only 7 heading into the CFB betting season. That my friend speaks volumes! The betting markets are currently fading that action with heavy juice riding the over of that impost.
Still, LSU checks in as better than 17-1 dogs to win the SEC and 14-1 dogs to win the West division. While anything can happen in the rough and tumble SEC, it’s clear the Tigers are nothing more than an afterthought after competing for the division and conference titles for so many years under the watch of the Madhatter. Sad but true, LSU likely doesn’t have the horses to compete once again in 2018.
Be that as it may, there’s still some tremendous talent that will line up for the Tigers this upcoming season. It likely just isn’t good enough to hang with the best of the best. With a new offensive coordinator for a second straight season, LSU will look to get back to gashing the ball down its opponent’s throats. Only this time, Derrius Guice won’t be in the backfield. Instead, a trifecta of backs will look to make up his production. Good luck!
Under center, Ohio State transfer Joe Burrow is said to hold the leg up over a trio of other candidates. He’s a dual-threat that can hurt opposing defenses with both his arm and legs, but only just joined the team following spring practice. Is he really the right choice with so many tough games out of the gates?
LSU ponied up buku bucks to resign defensive coordinator Dave Aranda this past offseason to keep him away from division rival Texas A&M. His stop unit ranked top 25 in all pertinent defensive statistical categories last season. He gets the benefit of having stud linebacker Devin White and shutdown cornerback Greedy Williams suiting up for him this season. The duo will make his job that much easier with loads of incoming and returning talent to plug in elsewhere. So long as the offense doesn’t bog down consistently or commit a ton of turnovers, the Tigers defense should once again rank out amongst the best in the nation.
Orgeron was never a popular hire amongst boosters and diehard fans of the program. They want someone with star power roaming the sidelines in Baton Rouge. Be careful what you wish for! Ed has the pulse of the team. They love the guy to death. Unfortunately, he faces a murderer’s row slate of opponents this season that will likely have them out of the CFP and division race halfway through it.
We already went over the first three weeks. After back-to-back home games against La Tech and Ole Miss, the schedule takes a major turn for the worse with a trip to the Swamp followed by three home games against Georgia, Mississippi State and Alabama. Two of those three teams played for the national title last season in case you forgot, and each is expected to get back to the CFP this season. It’s certainly within the realm of possibility that their season finale at Texas A&M could prove to be the game that decides whether they churn out a .500 record this season or not. If that’s the case, Eddie O likely won’t be roaming the sidelines in Baton Rouge next year.
