Memphis Tigers at SMU Mustangs, ESPN2 / Friday, November 16, 2018
Opening Line: Memphis -8
Preview: The Memphis Tigers were figured by many to be one of the teams to beat in the AAC entering the regular season off a runner-up showing a year ago with a bulk of the roster returning. Unfortunately, it hasn’t played out that way for those that got a piece of Mike Norvell’s kids on the futures odds at top rated sportsbooks. However, the team still has a slim shot of going back to the conference title game should it win out. For that to occur, it must get by the West Division leading SMU Mustangs under the ESPN2 Friday night lights to have any shot whatsoever. Continue...
Over the last handful of seasons, Friday night college football betting has turned into quite the spectacle. Weekday college pigskin extravaganzas used to be dominated by Thursday night, but then the NFL came a knocking and put that story line to bed. It only makes perfect sense to cook up some hardcore betting action under the Friday night lights with kids already used to playing under them at the high school level. With that, the family of ESPN channels has loads of exciting Friday night matchups lined up over the course of the 2018 regular season.
Kicking things off the first Friday of the season will be a fun one at Camp Randall where the Wisconsin Badgers will attempt to kick off their 2018 campaign in style against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Paul Chryst’s squad is expected to roll to the Big Ten West title this season for a likely rematch with Ohio State in the B1G title game. They’re five touchdown favorites for this matchup and have grossly failed to cover in that similar role each of the last two seasons.
The first doubleheader Friday night lights ESPN special is locked in for Week 4 when the Florida Atlantic Owls invade Spectrum Stadium in Orlando to square off against a UCF squad that went undefeated last season. UCF is once again a favorite to win the AAC, so you can be sure new head coach Josh Heupel will have his kids stoked to take to their home field in their first nationally televised game of the season. It’s perceived that this will be a down year in Pullman for Wazzu, but the “Mad Scientist” will likely have something cooked up for a USC Trojans outfit it upset as 5-point home dogs last season. That said, the Cougars have only won two of their visits to the Coliseum since the turn of the century.
Week 6 offers up another enticing doubleheader with the Ramblin’ Wreck squaring off against the Ville and Utah State running up against BYU. All four of these teams have much to prove with three of the four failing to go to bowl games last season. The Cardinals are now in the post Lamar Jackson era and face a steep climb in the Atlantic Division with teams like NC State, Wake Forest and Boston College on the up and up. The Cougars were embarrassed 40-24 by the Aggies last season in a pick ‘em game, so it’s safe to say LaVell Edwards Stadium will be rocking for this late night battle.
The late night edition of the following Friday’s matchup is one college football fanatics will most definitely be tuning into when the Arizona Wildcats visit Salt Lake City for a date with the Utah Utes. This is as big a divisional tilt each of these teams will have with both clubs likely chasing the Trojans for South supremacy all season long. Watching the matchup between Khalil Tate and Kyle Whittingham’s defense will certainly be worth the price of admission!
The double dip on Friday, November 9 will be must-see for those attacking the college football betting odds. Louisville at Syracuse followed by the nightcap that pits the Mountain West’s division winners from a season ago in Fresno State and Boise State. Dino Babers really put his imprint on the Orange last season even though the club only won four games ( 6-5-1 ATS ). Winning a game like this on national TV will do wonders for the program. The home team has won each of the last six tussles between the Bulldogs and Broncos, but Fresno State has won and covered each of the last four overall meetings with the under cashing in three straight.
ESPN’s Friday night schedule closes out with a bang in Week 13 when the West Virginia Mountaineers and Oklahoma Sooners get it on from Milan Puskar Stadium. Both clubs are expected to compete for the Big 12 title with Boomer Sooner returning what many to believe the best overall team in the league, while the Mounty’s are led by senior Will Grier who many argue is the best quarterback in the conference. WVU has dropped all six of its meetings with OU as members of the Big 12, and got their noises rubbed in it each of the last four seasons losing by the average score of 51-29. It’s high time Dana Holgorsen’s kids put up or shut up!
