The Golden State Warriors have put together one of the most memorable runs in NBA history, and they don’t plan for it to slow down any time soon. The addition of Kevin Durant proved to be a magnificent move for the organization, which went virtually unchallenged on its way to its second title in three years in 2016-17.
Kevin Durant re-signed in the offseason to keep this super team together, while Stephen Curry was signed to a lucrative extension. The Warriors proved that they are unstoppable when healthy and clicking on all cylinders. They enter the 2017-2018 season as heavy favorites for good reason, and it seems like only injuries can derail the journey for another championship.
2016-17 Record: 67-15 SU, 40-39-3 ATS, 32-50 O/U
2017-18 Regular Season Win Total: 67.5
Odds To Win Western Conference: -400
Odds To Win NBA Title: -220
It will probably be a little while before people quit talking about the Warriors blowing that infamous 3-1 lead over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Finals. For many Warriors fans, it probably still stings, but the 2017 playoffs surely changed the conversation.
The Warriors added Durant in the offseason last year to the already-dominant core of Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. The addition of Durant paid off big. In his first season as a Warrior, the eight-time All-Star was outstanding. He averaged 25.1 points and 8.3 rebounds a game in the regular season and helped Golden State finish as the top seed in the Western Conference.
Golden State swept through the first three rounds of the playoffs, defeating the Trail Blazers, Jazz and Spurs with ease. In a rematch with the Cavs in the NBA Finals, the Warriors were just as dominant, jumping out to 3-0 lead before eventually claiming their fifth NBA title in five game. Their 16-1 postseason record was the best of any team in NBA history and Durant was named the Finals MVP, averaging 28 points in game in the NBA Finals against Cleveland.
Curry finished the year averaging 25.3 points and 6.6 assists. Thompson added 22.3 points and he and Curry both shot 41 percent from three-point range. Green added 10.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists on the year.
The quartet is back in the fold, which by itself makes the Warriors the easy call as the team to beat. Andre Iguodala flirted with going to another team but eventually re-signed, and he is a key player off the bench. Shaun Livingston, JaVale McGee, Zaza Pachulia and David West are also back in the fold.
Golden State’s biggest acquisition in the offseason was the signing of Nick Young, who won’t be needed to play a big role but is some firepower off the bench, as if the Warriors needed more offense. Young hasn’t been a great shooter in his career but should have plenty of open looks on an offense that is so dominant.
Jordan Bell was also added but the rookie could have a tough time seeing the court except for in blowouts. It’s another extremely high projected win total as Golden State should dominate the competition in the regular season.
The big question is boredom, as the team is more talented than everyone in the league but may not have a bunch of motivation until the playoffs come around. The Warriors won 73 games two years ago and this year’s team is even better than that group.
Golden State won 67 games in 2016-17 even though Durant was injured, so it seems clear that its ceiling is higher than that. While single-digit losses may not happen, the Warriors should once again put on an absolute clinic while blitzing through the regular season.
Their odds to win the title are crazy high but it seems like it would be foolish to bet against this group. Golden State has become the NBA darling and while the Cavaliers, Spurs and Rockets have solid squads, there is no one with this accumulation of star talent on the same roster.
Anything less than another championship would be considered a huge disappointment.
