The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the best teams in the NBA for years now, with five NBA titles under their belt. They are prepared to compete for another championship this season, and while they won’t be the favorites with the Golden State Warriors in the mix, the Spurs will again be one of the chief contenders.
With last year’s addition of Kevin Durant choosing to re-sign in Oakland, the Warriors are once again the favorite by a large margin. Furthermore, the Rockets have added Chris Paul to pair with superstar James Harden and hope to be in the chase. Oklahoma City believes the pairing of Russell Westbrook with Paul George will leave them improved.
The Western Conference is going to be interesting to watch throughout the 2017-18 season, but don’t discount San Antonio, which boasts the best coach in the NBA in Gregg Popovich as well as a talented core.
2016-17 Record: 61-21 SU, 41-39-2 ATS, 43-37-2 O/U

The Spurs finished the regular season with a record of 61-21 and snagged their 20th straight playoff spot, entering the postseason as the No. 2 seed. The Spurs defeated Memphis in the opening round of the playoffs 4-2. They took on Houston in the conference semifinals and after a 2-2 start to the series, won the next two games in a row to punch their ticket to the conference finals. The win against the Rockets was impressive, especially considering the Spurs had to play the final four games without Tony Parker, who suffered a season-ending injury to his quad in Game 2.
In the following round, however, San Antonio -- along with the rest of the NBA last season-- was no match for Golden State. The Spurs were swept by the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals to end their season. The series turned when star swingman Kawhi Leonard was injured in the first game when San Antonio held a comfortable lead. The Warriors rallied for the win in that one and cruised the rest of the way.
Despite the bitter ending, the Spurs had another incredibly successful season behind leading Leonard, who averaged 27.7 points a game. Leonard also led the Spurs in rebounds, assists and steals. LaMarcus Aldridge, Parker, Patty Mills and Pau Gasol were also key contributors. The Spurs were underdogs in their series against Golden State but it would have been nice to see how competitive the matchup would have been if Leonard and Parker were healthy.
The Spurs didn’t do much tinkering in the offseason, which isn’t a huge surprise based on last year’s success. The big addition was Rudy Gay, who signed a two-year deal with the team. Gay averaged 18.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game a season ago with Sacramento, although those numbers are likely to dip with the Spurs since he isn’t expected to be as big a part of the offense.
Gay should be a solid defender and will fit in nicely with the nucleus. Leonard was in the mix for the league MVP a season ago and should once again finish as one of the best players in the league. If he can take his game to yet another level the Spurs should be the clear No. 2 team in the West and the NBA.
Gason is back, while Aldridge needs to show he can be more consistent in big series after having an up-and-down postseason. Parker’s injury is worrisome, but Mills should be able to fill in capably for however long he is needed to start. Manu Ginobili contemplated retirement but decided to come back for another season. If this is it for him, the Spurs would love to send him out on the highest note.
San Antonio won’t have the best odds in the NBA but if Golden State falters just a little bit or suffers a key injury, the Spurs should be right there waiting to take advantage. This team should once again finish with one of the best records in the NBA, but San Antonio will be judged by how it does in the playoffs.
