Dallas Mavericks Basketball Report 2017 - NBA Mavericks Basketball Odds

Dallas-Mavericks-Betting-ReportDirk Nowitzki will soon be 40 years old and the rigors of the NBA are no place for a man that age. Dirk took a pay cut to come back for his 20th season with the Mavs and give it one last go at an NBA title. But the Mavs are coming off their worst season since Nowitzki’s rookie year and there doesn’t appear to be much in place to think a championship, or even a playoff appearance, are in store for the new season. It’s time the Mavs started thinking about life beyond Dirk and as sad as the thought is, it will be happening real soon.

2016-17 Record: 33-49 SU, 43-38-1 ATS, 34-46 O/U

2017-18 Regular Season Win Total: 34.5

Odds To Win Western Conference: +20000

Odds To Win NBA Title: +40000

2016-17 Dallas Mavericks Season Review

The Mavs missed the playoffs last season and it wasn’t even close. Finishing 33-49, they failed to qualify for the postseason for the second time in five seasons and just the second time since Mark Cuban became the majority owner in 2000. It was a difficult time for a franchise that had won at least 40 games in each of the previous 17 full seasons, hit the 50-win mark 12 times and reached 60 wins on three occasions.

The team stuck with the same strategy of using a roster full of veteran players, hoping to squeeze out a few more decent seasons from them. It was evident that wasn’t going to happen, though. Nowitzki played in 54 games, starting point guard Deron Williams played in 40 before the team cut ties with him, and Andrew Bogut was a non-factor. The Mavs changed course mid season looking for some fresh faces to invigorate the club. They came in the form of Seth Curry and Yogi Farrell.

Known for being Steph’s brother and playing a total of 48 games with four different teams over the past three years, Curry finally broke into a rotation and even started 42 games. He averaged nearly 13 points per game and shot better than 48 percent from the floor. Farrell was quite a find after being released by the Nets. The Mavs penned him to a 10-day contract and Yogi showed he belonged by winning Rookie of the Month honors after joining the club in February.

2017-18 Dallas Mavericks Season Outlook

There wasn’t the urgency to go into a roster rebuild during the offseason since the team accomplished that during last regular season. The club got younger with the addition of Farrell and Curry developed into a serviceable shooting guard. This allowed the team to dump Williams and move on from J.J. Barea and Devin Harris as the No. 1 options in the backcourt. Both are decent players, but help was needed, and it came in the form of first-round pick Dennis Smith.

The NC State product lit up the ACC last season scoring 18.1 points with 4.6 assists. He’s a shooter who needs that part of his game refined a bit – he shot just 45.5 percent from the floor and 35.9 percent from three-point range last season. But he’s the type of player who can make a difference and fell into the Mavs’ lap at No. 9.

Nowitzki is back for his 20th season and we saw the needle tickling the E last year. The Mavs are hopeful the influx of young talent has an effect on Dirk, who missed the first two months of last season and had his lowest points per game average since joining the club. The acquisition of Nerlens Noel along with Harrison Barnes gives the Mavs a solid frontcourt and Wesley Matthews will anchor the wing. We can see the Mavs back in the hunt for a playoff spot, but getting there might be tough with so many good teams in the Western Conference.
