For a small-market team, the Memphis Grizzlies had a nice run over the past several years, continually making the playoffs and producing winning seasons. Defense has been the hallmark for this group and that will be its foundation once again in 2017-18. However, the wins have been harder to come by over the past few seasons and it remains to be seen if Memphis can turn it around with some fresh blood in the mix.
Point guard Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol are still the keys to this team, but the hope is that Chandler Parsons can step up as the third banana and some young players can give nice minutes. Memphis is no longer a pesky underdog capable of winning a playoff series but it hopes to become a lottery team. That would signal a rebuild, and the Grizzlies are simply hoping to retool with Conley and Gasol still the main go-to guys on the roster.

Memphis was a pinch better than .500 last season and were third in the NBA by allowing only 100.0 points per game. The Grizzlies made it to the postseason for the seventh straight season but were knocked out by the San Antonio Spurs in six games in the first round. After three straight years with 50 or more wins, Memphis has only been a few games above .500 each of the past two seasons.
The Grizzlies didn’t have a lot of firepower in 2016-17 as their scoring average of 100.5 points per game was second-to-last in the NBA. Conley led the way with 20.5 points and 6.3 assists per contest. Gasol added 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists.
Zach Randolph had long been the third major component in Memphis, and even though he came off the bench last year, Z-Bo still averaged 14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Chandler Parsons was the team’s big free agent signing as he agreed to a four-year maximum salary deal. However, he averaged only 6.2 points per game as knee injuries kept him out of a majority of the team’s games and had him on a minutes restriction in the ones he played in.
Without Parsons’ ability to be another primary scorer, the Grizzlies were too predictable on offense, which resulted in a season near the .500 mark.
It’s going to be hard for the Grizzlies to ever be a dominant team year in and year out since they play in a small market and will have a tough time luring superstar free agents. However, the pair of Conley and Gasol is a nice core and if Parsons can rebound this season, there should be some improvement.
Parsons has been injury prone of late and hopes to have a clean bill of health for this season. The Grizzlies are always tough defensively but their issues are on the other side of the court. Parsons was signed to help shore up that deficiency but he did next to nothing in his debut season with the team.
Randolph and Vince Carter both departed in the offseason, which opens the door for some younger players to start making an impact. JaMychal Green had a decent season a year ago and will look to improve across the board. Tyreke Evans was brought in as was Ben McLemore, and they are a pair of players who may be able to add some scoring punch off the bench. Memphis doesn’t have as much star power as other teams but it has an intriguing roster.
The Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are looked at as the cream of the crop in the Western Conference. The Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers each lost key players, so they could drop. The Grizzlies would love to move up in the West and grab a better seed in the 2017-18 playoffs, and will need big years once again from Conley and Gasol as well as improvement from Parsons and others for that to happen.
