MMA Betting and UFC Gambling Odds Explained
MMA Fighting is the most exciting form of combat sports in the world today. The fights are fast and exciting and usually end in a stoppage by KO or submission. MMA is exploding in popularity and so is interest in wagering on the fights. Until you try it, you have no idea how much having "betting action" on a fight can enhance the event, even if it's only a few dollars at risk. Betting on UFC, however, requires almost as much discipline as learning the martial art itself.
MMA Betting Strategies: As you consider UFC betting you will want to do research on the fighters and their styles. UFC bettors must carefully consider each fighter’s strengths and weaknesse.
Then one must determine how each fighter featured will be able to match up against his opponent, as sometimes fighters are simply unable to use their strengths or take advantage of an opponent’s weaknesses. Then, one must look for value in the UFC betting odds.
The UFC odds are generally offered in the form of a money line, meaning UFC fighting fans will wager on the outright winner of a matchup. However, one must analyze each UFC fighting matchup carefully in order to determine whether the favorite or the underdog offers the best value in the UFC betting odds.
How do UFC Fight Odds Work?
By far the most popular bet, the moneyline provides a fighter’s odds to win. Because there are no point spreads in MMA, the money line is essentially the handicap that oddsmakers provide. These are assigned in plus or minus values, with the favorite as the minus number. Think of the money lines in terms of $100 bets.
Let’s use a recent as an example:
Conor McGregor -200
Nate Diaz +160
In this scenario, Conor McGregor is the favorite. His -200 value means that it would take a winning $200 bet to win $100. Nate Diaz is a +160 underdog, which means that it would take a winning $100 bet to win $160. You can see why it’s so tempting to bet on underdogs in general, as you get paid out more than what you put in.
Over/Under (Total) on Rounds
Also known as the round total, the over/under is a popular bet among MMA gamblers. In fact, it’s the only other bet that is required from the oddsmakers, in addition to the moneyline. It’s a very simple concept: you just need to pick if the fight will end before or after the assigned over/under. Again, there will be a plus or minus value assigned to each option.
Let’s continue with the above example:
Conor McGregor -200 vs. Nate Diaz +160
Over/under, 2.5 rounds, over -105, under -125
Here, you need to pick whether the fight ends before or after the 2.5-round mark. To clarify further, that is two full rounds plus another half round on top. With five-minute rounds in MMA, this would mean the over/under equates to the 2:30 mark in the third round. Neither of the picks offer a plus payout, but the under is the more expensive play at -125. So you would have to bet $125 to win $100, and the fight would have to end before 2.5 rounds.
Prop BetsFor bigger fights, there is usually an assortment of prop bets, which provide a variety of lesser-known betting options. Like the moneyline or the total, these picks are all assigned plus or minus values. Let’s go over a few.
Fight Goes to Decision/Fight Doesn’t Go to Decision
This is self explanatory. You’re just betting on whether the fight goes to the final bell, not on any particular fighter.
Fight Starts Round 2 (3,4,5)You’re betting on if a fight makes it to a certain round.
Fighter Wins by TKO
Fighter Wins by Decision
Fighter Wins by Submission
Feeling lucky? Than try picking who will win, and how he or she will do it. The payouts here are generally really big, considering how difficult this is to do.

MMA bettors can take advantage of money lines by taking a couple simple things into consideration when placing your bet: A moneyline is more or less the substitution made for a point spread. Since there is no possible way to determine a fight based on points (like in basketball or football for instance) Bookmakers installed moneylines (odds) to level out the playing field for bettors like yourself. Fighters compete in what is known as the octagon, an engineered fence. Once thought to be a gimmick, the octagonal shape gives structural support. The octagon is 30 feet in diameter and stands 5ft 6in.
