When: December 29, 2017 - 1:00 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Where: Charlotte, N.C. - Bank of America Stadium
Who: Texas A&M Aggies vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Dave Clawson has done a great job with Wake Forest. This program really had nothing going for it for years and years, and a seven-win season in the ACC is considered to be a triumph.
The Demon Deacons hung in there with Florida State and won games against Louisville, Syracuse, N.C. State and Boston College. Toss in a non-conference win at Appalachian State, and you've got a pretty darn good set of results for a team that played against 10 bowl eligible teams this season.
Another middling 7-5 season was enough to get Kevin Sumlin booted out the door at Texas A&M. The Aggies are making the big swing with Jimbo Fisher, and their expectations is that he is legitimately going to bring the National Championship to College Station in the near future.
For now, though, A&M has to get ready to play in its last game of the season at the Belk Bowl. It'll be a tough game for sure in what could be cold conditions in Charlotte. This game will feel like a de facto road test against a Wake Forest school that might be small, but can drive to the game.
The Aggies only beat won bowl eligible team all season long, that coming against South Carolina back on September 30. That win took a lot of pressure off of Sumlin at the time, but losses to Alabama, Mississippi State and Auburn at home in the next month that followed was effectively his demise.
This is the ninth straight season in which Texas A&M has been in a bowl game. The team has split its previous eight, including two straight losses in the Texas Bowl and Music City Bowl.
Wake Forest is stepping up in class just a bit after winning the Military Bowl last season. That was the Demon Deacons' first bowl victory since 2008.
Opening Line: Wake Forest -3.5
Preview: How will the Texas A&M Aggies handle playing for an interim head coach in the Belk Bowl on Friday, December 29, as they take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons? The Aggies hired Jimbo Fisher and signed up to a huge 10-year, $75 million dollar deal to replace the fired Kevin Sumlin, but Fisher will not be coaching the bowl game. Jeff Banks, who is the special team’s coordinator and tight ends coach, will be the interim coach for the bowl game. Oddsmakers have Wake Forest listed as a slight favorite in what is expected to be a high scoring game, as the total is listed in the mid-60’s. Continue...
