The 2018 MLS season is one that will surely bring a lot of excitement to American soccer fans. Atlanta United and Minnesota United have brought about two more expansion teams, and the opening on Orlando City's new stadium in Downtown Orlando has really reset the standard of what a soccer stadium should and will be in the States.
All of that together parlayed with the fact that we've seen two of the most popular franchises in the league -- Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders FC -- win the MLS Cup in the last couple years, and we've got the makings for what should be a fantastic campaign.
It's worth remembering that, unlike all of the rest of the leagues in Europe who merely use a points based system to judge teams, all a team has to do is get into the postseason to have a shot at winning the MLS Cup. Neither Seattle nor Portland before it were given first round byes in the playoffs and had to play through an opening round match at home just to get into the home-and-home portion of the draw. That's why it's really hard to trust any team right now.
For example, the New York Red Bulls are set as the +550 favorites to win the MLS Cup. There's no such thing as a soccer league anywhere else in the world where the favorite is set at +550 one fixture into the season. The Red Bulls, for our money, gave up too much veteran experience in the offseason to warrant being called the MLS favorites, while the second favorites in line, the LA Galaxy, almost have too much experience and name recognition and almost always fall short of goals. Those goals will be harder to reach this year now that Bruce Arena, one of the most successful managers in MLS history, is no longer at the helm for the team.
That's why you'll have to look at teams like Toronto FC and FC Dallas for the clubs who might really have a great shot to be incredibly successful in the regular season. FC Dallas has been right on the cusp these last couple years and keep running into great teams in the second season. Toronto FC keeps building around its core with Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore, and it's clear that this side is going to be one of the best in the East.
Looking for a live longshot? Orlando City definitely fits the bill. We'll have to see how long Kaka is out for after he was hurt in the opening 15 minutes of the season, but it's clear that going into Orlando City Stadium is going to be a nightmare for the opposition this year. The Lions were much better at the end of last season, and they nearly eked into the playoffs as a result. With Cyle Larin now a couple years into his growth as a pro, he is a dark horse to be the league's MVP this season. The Lions could be had at +2500 right now to win the MLS Cup.
