The Primera Division is Argentina’s highest tier of football competition and the league is rated as one of the ten best in world along with the English Premiership, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, Brazil Serie A and German Bundesliga. Unlike most European football leagues, Argentinean Premier Division teams compete in two separate one-round tournaments each year, thus resulting in two annual champions. These tournaments include the Clausura (Closing) which runs from February to June and the Apertura (Opening) which runs from August to December. Primera Division Argentina was the first South American nation to adopt this competition format, but since its inception in 1990 other countries have followed.
