The prep races are almost over and only the Derby Trial is left to get points in the new point system to determine which horses can get in the race instead of the old graded earnings list.
The top Kentucky Derby contenders already have 30 qualifying points or more which will probably be enough for a ticket into the “Run for the Roses” on May 6, 2017 at Churchill Downs.
The Kentucky Derby field is limited to 20 horses. If more than 20 horses enter the race, the final entries are determined by the amount of graded stakes earnings each horse has accumulated.
Each race in the first leg of the “Triple Crown Championship Series” between Feb. thru March will be worth 50 points to the winner, 20 to the runner-up, 10 to third and 5 to fourth.
The seven lucrative races staged three-to-five weeks ahead of the Derby offer lofty points worth twice as much as the first leg: 100 to first, 40 to second, 20 to third and 10 to fourth.
The post time for the first race is set at 10:30 AM and the post time for the 143 running of the Kentucky Derby will be 6:24 PM - approximately and will be televised live on NBC beginning at 4 PM Eastern on Saturday.
When placing a bet on Kentucky Derby future odds, consider whether or not the horse you are betting on will have the necessary graded stakes earnings to be in the top 20 earners.
The field for the Kentucky Derby has been whittled down to just 25 contenders, and of the 25, 20 will finally be selected to begin the quest for the elusive Triple Crown, a jewel finally captured last year by American Pharoah. Now is the time to get invested in your favorite Kentucky Derby betting lines though, as the prices tend to move a ton after the morning lines are released the week of the race. Continue
