Formerly the Quad Cities Open, the John Deere Classic gets underway a week before the Open Championship, July 12-15, 2018. The tournament began in 1971 as a satellite event for the PGA Tour. A year later, it became an official event on the Tour and has been ever since.
Since 2000, TPC Deere Run has been the host course. The layout measures 7,300 yards and plays to a par 71. Low scores are the norm and you can expect at least 20-under par to be the winning score.
Last year Bryson DeChambeau put on a back-nine surge that saw him pole vault 3rd round leader Patrick Rodgers and claim the title. It appeared it was Rodgers tournament to lose with nine holes to go and that’s exactly what happened, he lost. DeChambeau birdied four of his last six holes to erase a four shot deficit. His final round 65 was low for the day.
Past champions include Payne Stewart, David Toms, Vijay Singh, Kenny Perry, Zach Johnson and Jordan Spieth. Steve Stricker holds the record with three wins.
DeChambeau is a rising star and on his way to a big time career on the PGA Tour - maybe a major on his resume by the time he’s done. Johnson lives two hrs from the course and this is a home game for him - he won here in 2012. Molinari may be the hottest player on the planet, winning the BMW PGA Championship in Europe and following it up with another win at the Quicken Loans. Niemann is just 19-years old and in only eight career PGA Tour starts, he has four top 10’s and locked up his card - the only other players to do that - Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Charles Howell III and Justin Leonard.
