The bottom line is they won the football game. At least that’s how the Jacksonville Jaguars are going to look at it. And when you haven’t tasted victory in the postseason in a decade, is there another way? We know the Jags have a dynamic defense and we also know Blake Bortles can have some poor games. But they used the former and overcame the latter to post their first postseason win since knocking off the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2008 playoffs.
Bortles was downright scary throwing the football against the Bills in the Wild Card game, hitting on just 12 of 23 passes for 87 yards, and he started the postseason the same way he ended the regular season. Bortles completed just 56 percent of his passes over the last two regular season games and was picked off five times. However, he didn’t turn the ball over against Buffalo and his best pass of the game was a 1-yard dart to Ben Koyack on fourth down for the game’s only touchdown.
The defense came to play and was the only reason why the Jags will head to Pittsburgh for a Divisional Round game. The Jags shut down Tyrod Taylor, held LeSean McCoy to 75 yards rushing and limited Buffalo to just 263 for the game. And the group should feel pretty good about their chances against the Steelers after putting up a monster effort when the teams met during the regular year. The Jags intercepted five Ben Roethlisberger passes and held Le’Veon Bell to 47 rushing yards in a convincing 30-9 win back in Week 5. They better not count on Big Ben being so philanthropic and Bortles needs to play better for the Jags to have a chance.
