Jacksonville Jaguars Season Preview / 2018 NFL Jacksonville Jaguars Odds

Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Odds

The bottom line is they won the football game. At least that’s how the Jacksonville Jaguars are going to look at it. And when you haven’t tasted victory in the postseason in a decade, is there another way? We know the Jags have a dynamic defense and we also know Blake Bortles can have some poor games. But they used the former and overcame the latter to post their first postseason win since knocking off the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2008 playoffs.

Bortles was downright scary throwing the football against the Bills in the Wild Card game, hitting on just 12 of 23 passes for 87 yards, and he started the postseason the same way he ended the regular season. Bortles completed just 56 percent of his passes over the last two regular season games and was picked off five times. However, he didn’t turn the ball over against Buffalo and his best pass of the game was a 1-yard dart to Ben Koyack on fourth down for the game’s only touchdown.

The defense came to play and was the only reason why the Jags will head to Pittsburgh for a Divisional Round game. The Jags shut down Tyrod Taylor, held LeSean McCoy to 75 yards rushing and limited Buffalo to just 263 for the game. And the group should feel pretty good about their chances against the Steelers after putting up a monster effort when the teams met during the regular year. The Jags intercepted five Ben Roethlisberger passes and held Le’Veon Bell to 47 rushing yards in a convincing 30-9 win back in Week 5. They better not count on Big Ben being so philanthropic and Bortles needs to play better for the Jags to have a chance.

Jaguars vs. Steelers NFL Preview: It is strength vs. strength on Sunday, as the Jacksonville Jaguars visit the Pittsburgh Steelers in an AFC Divisional Playoff game that can be seen on CBS. The Jaguars love to run the ball, but the Steelers are tough against the run, while on the other side of the ball, the Steelers feature a potent passing attack, but the Jaguars are No. 1 in the NFL against the pass. Let’s look at the game and NFL picks. Continue

2017 Jacksonville Jaguars Season Results

Wild Card Round: Jaguars 10, Bills 3

ATS Result: Bills +8

Over/Under Total Result: Under 39.5

Despite the poor play of Bortles, he managed to get the team in position for the game-tying field goal just before halftime with his scrambling ability. He then tossed a 1-yard TD pass on a fourth-down play late in the third quarter for the eventual game-winning score, but it wasn’t enough to cover the 8-point spread. The Jags got some help late when a completed Bills pass was overruled and Jalen Ramsey sealed the victory with a pick of Nathan Peterman after Tyrod Taylor got knocked out of the game.

Week 17: Titans 15, Jaguars 10

ATS Result: Titans -2.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 40

Facing a desperate Tennessee club, the Jags succumbed to the pressure and failed to score an offensive touchdown in dropping their second straight game ATS and cashing the under. The Jags were still in it following a defensive score by Yannick Ngakoue early in the fourth quarter that made the score 15-10, but the offense couldn’t do anything and Bortles was picked off on the final drive.

Week 16: 49ers 44, Jaguars 33

ATS Result: 49ers +4

Over/Under Total Result: Over 43

The Jags vaunted defense gave up 21 fourth quarter points and three picks from Blake Bortles hurt the offense. Still, the Jags battled back from a 16-0 deficit to tie the game and took a 3-point lead early in the third before the Niners pulled away. The Jags made it interesting late with touchdowns 27 seconds apart, but the Niners sealed the outcome and slapped the first ATS loss on the Jags in four games.

Week 15: Jaguars 45, Texans 7

ATS Result: Jaguars -10.5

Over/Under Total Result: Over 39

The Jags built a 31-0 halftime lead behind three Bortles scoring passes, a touchdown run from seldom-used Tommy Bohanon and a Josh Lambo field goal. A breakdown on defense allowed Houston to score its only touchdown, but Bohanon responded with his second score and the Jags easily covered the spread for a third straight game while eclipsing the total on their own.

Week 14: Jaguars 30, Seahawks 24

ATS Result: Jaguars -3

Over/Under Total Result: Over 41

Bortles’ second scoring pass came one play after the Seattle tied the game and started a 17-0 scoring spurt that carried the Jags to the victory. Jacksonville withstood two long scoring plays in the fourth quarter and used three Josh Lambo field goals to help cover the spread. Each team amassed over 400 yards of offense in what was supposed to be a defensive struggle to easily cash the over.

Week 13: Jaguars 30, Colts 10

ATS Result: Jaguars -10

Over/Under Total Result: Under 41

The good Blake Bortles came to play on Sunday and the Colts had no chance. Bortles completed 26 of 35 for 309 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover and the defense made life miserable for Jacoby Brissett as the Jags easily covered the 10-point spread. Leonard Fournette scored for the first time in his last four games as the Jags built a 24-3 lead. The Colts got closer with a long scoring pass, but the Jags shut them down the rest of the way to cash the under.

Week 12: Cardinals 27, Jaguars 24

ATS Result: Cardinals +6

Over/Under Total Result: Over 37.5

The Jags trailed the entire game until Campbell’s fumble return touchdown early in the fourth quarter. But they were unable to stop Blaine Gabbert, who led the Cards on a scoring drive to retake the lead and drove the Cards into field goal range after Bortles scored the equalizer. The game appeared headed to overtime after the Jags punted with 16 seconds left, but it was enough time for the Cards to move into position for a game-winning 57-yard field goal.

Week 11: Jaguars 19, Browns 7

ATS Result: Jaguars -7.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 37

Bortles struck first with a touchdown pass and the first of two Josh Lambo field goals gave the Jags a 10-0 lead, which proved to be enough. But the defense got the Jags an ATS win when Telvin Smith recovered a fumble in the end zone to cover the 7.5-point spread. Conditions were awful, as was the Browns offense, leading to win for under bettors.

Week 10: Jaguars 20, Chargers 17 (OT)

ATS Result: Chargers +5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 40.5

A wild ending went in favor in the Jags to keep their winning streak alive. Josh Lambo kicked the game-tying field goal with three seconds left in regulation and Bouye’s interception in OT nearly went to the house, which would have given the Jags a cover. Instead Lambo nailed the game-winner, preventing them from covering the 5-point spread.

Week 9: Jaguars 23, Bengals 7

ATS Result: Jaguars -6

Over/Under Total Result: Under 38

The Jags didn’t need Fournette with the defense holding Cincinnati to just 148 total yards. Josh Lambo’s third field goal midway through the third quarter gave the Jags enough to cover the 6-point spread and Jaydon Mickens capped it off with a 63-yard punt return. Getting A.J. Green ejected in the first half took some steam out of the Bengals’ offense and the team’s cashed the under.

Week 8: BYE

Week 7: Jaguars 27, Colts 0

ATS Result: Jaguars -3

Over/Under Total Result: Under 41

For the second time this season the Jags collected 10 sacks in a game and they were never in danger after scoring on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead. The only drama was if they would get the shutout and forcing a turnover on downs at their own 6-yard line sealed that outcome. Bortles was spectacular and Yeldon picked up where Fournette left off leading to 518 yards of offense and an easy cover.

Week 6: Rams 27, Jaguars 17

ATS Result: Rams +1

Over/Under Total Result: Over 42

We can’t blame Blake Bortles for this loss. Instead, that falls on the play of special teams. The Jags allowed a kickoff return touchdown, had a blocked punt returned for a score and missed a pair of field goals in the 10-point loss, failing to cover the 1-point spread. The Rams kicked a field goal to extend their lead with two and a half minutes to play, giving the over its fourth cash in six games.

Week 5: Jaguars 30, Steelers 9

ATS Result: Jaguars +7.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 41

The Jags didn’t need Bortles to win the game and he didn’t lose it. Instead it was the defense and Fournette who proved to be too much in the outright victory. After the Steelers took a 9-7 lead, the Jags got defensive scores from Telvin Smith and Barry Church on consecutive possessions to take a big lead into the fourth. The Jags picked five passes and held the Steelers without a touchdown to cash the under.

Week 4: Jets 23, Jaguars 20 (OT)

ATS Result: Jets +4

Over/Under Total Result: Over 38.5

The Jags rallied for 10 fourth quarter points with a defensive touchdown and a field goal to send the game into overtime, but it could have been much more. On the field goal drive, the Jags had a touchdown wiped out by a penalty and they couldn’t punch it in after a first-and-goal at the Jets six. It was as if the Jags were trying to lose and they succeeded in OT after a taunting penalty set up the Jets game-winner.

Week 3: Jaguars 44, Ravens 7

ATS Result: Jaguars +3

Over/Under Total Result: Over 38

For once Bortles got replaced and it wasn’t because he sucked. After throwing four TD passes, Bortles sat the fourth quarter after building a 44-0 lead. Bortles was solid, but so was the rest of the team as the Jags won outright as a 3-point dog. The defense stifled the Ravens and was denied the shutout on a late touchdown. Still, the Jags exceeded the total for a second straight game.

Week 2: Titans 37, Jaguars 16

ATS Result: Titans -1

Over/Under Total Result: Over 42

Many of the same problems that have plagued the Jags over recent years appeared in this loss. They gave the ball away three times, all courtesy of Bortles, and their 10 penalties for 99 yards was a huge issue. Jacksonville actually had a 3-0 lead after an early field goal, but the defense couldn’t contain the Titans, surrendering points on six consecutive drives to turn a tie game into a 28-point deficit. The Jags allowed 179 yards on the ground even with DeMarco Murray spending most of the day on the bench.

Week 1: Jaguars 29, Texans 7

ATS Result: Jaguars +5.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 38

With Bortles managing the game instead of trying to win it, the Jags can be successful. The game plan worked in Houston with the Jags running for 155 yards while allowing Bortles to throw just 21 passes. They built a 19-0 halftime lead and easily covered the 5.5-point spread by clamping down defensively. The Jags likely won’t score a lot of points, but if the defense plays as well as it did against Houston, they won’t have to.

Jacksonville Jaguars Pre-Season Game Results

Preseason Record: 2-2

ATS Record: 2-2

Over/Under Total Record: 2-2

The Jaguars have been bad for the past decade, but they’ve really messed up against the Texans. The Jags haven’t beaten Houston in the last six tries and are just 2-11 in the last 13 meetings. The games were close last season with both decided by a combined four points, but the Jags find ways to lose and until they overcome that, they will continue to be at the bottom of the division.
