Indiana Grand (formerly Indiana Downs) is a 152-acre horse and harness racing property in Shelbyville, Indiana with a one-mile main track and a seven furlong turf track. The race track is located 15 miles from the city of Indianapolis, and is about 42 miles from Hoosier Park. Together, these two tracks contribute to the development of the horse racing industry of the state.
Indiana Downs Thoroughbred for thoroughbreds, standardbreds and Quarter Horses, with the thoroughbred season running from April to June. Harness racing is also on the calendar from June through October. The facility houses a one-mile dirt oval and a seven-furlong turf course.
A total of 35 stakes will be offered during the 120-day racing season that spans Apr. 18 through Oct. 28. Indiana’s richest horse race will be surrounded by five other stakes races on the card, including the GIII Indiana Oaks, providing purses for the evening card of more than $1.1 million.
The 23rd running of the Grade III $500,000-added Indiana Derby "A Royal Derby" has been set. Indiana’s richest horse race will be held Saturday, July 15 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.
Thoroughbreds aged three years and older compete on the dirt track, covering a distance of 1-1/16 miles. This race was established in 1995, eventually growing into a Grade 3 event in 2002 before earning designation as a Grade 2 stakes in 2004. As one of the biggest races in Indiana, this derby has fostered development of some of the best horses ever to race in this state.
The Indiana Derby is Race 9 at the Indiana Grand Race Course on Saturday, with Post Time at 9:41 pm ET.
The Grade III $200,000-added Indiana Oaks will join the Derby and will continues to boasts more than one million in purse money each year. Indiana Derby Night will once again be complemented by other activities in the days surrounding the event along with other stakes races, bringing the attention of the horse racing world to the state of Indiana. The $200,000 Centaur Stakes and $200,000 Indiana Grand, turf races for 3-year-olds and 3-year-old fillies, will highlight the turf stakes schedule once again in 2017. The race is set for Wednesday, Sept. 6 and will be accompanied by three other stakes races on the card.
