The race track first opened August 3, 1863 in Saratoga Springs, New York. often referred to as "The Spa" Saratoga Race Course is the place to find top Thoroughbred horse racing action, July through Labor Day each year. The 40 day meet draws the top horses, trainers and owners in the world.
Known as the Graveyard of Champions, Saratoga Race Course has earned a reputation for being a challenging track for favorites. In fact, the dominant Man O’ War lost a race against the aptly named Upset here at Saratoga.
There are three separate racetracks at Saratoga: a seven-furlong turf track on the interior ring, an eight-furlong track turf track called the Mellon Turf Course and a main dirt track with a length of nine furlongs.
Steeplechase races are held on these turf tracks in addition to the thoroughbreds. The Inner turf course is the usual course on which the steeplechases take place, though either of the turf courses will host the steeplechases.
The highlight of the Saratoga meet is the Grade 1, $1 million Travers Stakes, for 3-year-olds and boasts a schedule of 30 plus graded stakes races, 17 of them Grade 1's. Notable races for 2-year-olds include the Grade 3 Sanford and Grade 1 Hopeful for colts, and the Grade 3 Schuylerville and the Grade 1 Spinaway for fillies.
