Nestled in the scenic foothills of California’s San Gabriel Mountains, Acradia. Santa Anita Park, "The Great Race Place", is arguably the most well-known race tracks in the world, and continues to be a driving force in the racing industry.

It first opened for thoroughbred horse racing in 1934 and today, Over 40 different stakes are held in Santa Anita. The track itself has a main track as well as one smaller track. The main track, build with a synthetic material to comply with California law, runs 9/10ths of a mile, or seven furlongs.

Besides the usual turf and dirt ovals found at other racetracks around North America, Santa Anita is also home to the unique “downhill turf” course for races up 6 1/2 furlongs in length. The course is a downhill chute with a slight right-hand turn that crosses over the main track before straightening onto the main turf course.

It’s the premier thoroughbred racing venue in California and is quickly becoming the premier racing venue in the United States. Santa Anita’s stakes schedule is highlighted by its Triple Crown prep races, the Santa Anita Derby, San Felipe Stakes, San Vicente Stakes, Robert B. Lewis Stakes and Sham Stakes, which are run each spring for three-year-olds.

Additionally, Santa Anita hosts great stakes horse races, including the Santa Anita Handicap, sometimes referred to as simply the ‘Big Cap,’ the Malibu Stakes, the Santa Anita Oaks and the Santa Margarita Stakes.

As well, The Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships has been held at Santa Anita Park in four out of the past six years. The Breeders' Cup Challenge series is a schedule of "win and you're in!" races in which horses must participate to qualify for the richest two days in sports for North America.

Santa Anita Park opens annually in December, with daily racing continuing through late April. In addition, Santa Anita's fall meeting, presented by the Oak Tree Racing Association, takes to the track from early October to early November every year.
