WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Terence Crawford (30-0, 21 KOs) will defend his unified titles against Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz (19-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. The card airs live on HBO starting 10:15 p.m. ET.
Undefeated unified junior welterweight champion Terence Crawford is set to take on his toughest challenge yet. The top-10 pound-for-pound fighter will meet Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz in one of the best divisional matchups of the year.
Crawford is coming off an easy eighth round stoppage win over John Molina Jr. Prior to the that, he cruised past Viktor Postol to to unify his titles. One could say that he’s never actually been truly challenged inside the ring.
Diaz will look to change that. The Dominican fighter is known for his aggressive style, and he will like to try and bully Crawford and grind him down.
Let’s check out the tale of the tape and break down the fight. Boxing odds are available at BookMaker.eu.
Crawford is looking to clean out the junior welterweight division and win every major strap before moving up a weight class. That means getting past Diaz, a natural 140-pounder. It’d be nice if he could line up a fight with Adrien Broner, but it’s doubtful that bout ever comes to fruition.
A two-division world champion, Crawford has stopped five of his last seven opponents. Despite his impressive record, this will be the first time he is fighting at the Garden.
“Diaz is a good fighter, this is a good fight and yes there will be a lot of people coming from Omaha,” said Crawford. “There is a reason I want this fight to be at Madison Square Garden. This is where all of the great champions fought and I want to be a big part of it.”
Diaz could very well be undefeated, save for a loss to Lamont Peterson that many scored in his favor. He’s since bounced back from that blemish with a UD over the previously undefeated Sammy Vasquez and a sixth-round stoppage of Lives Morales.
He’s got an impressive background, as the first Dominican to win the gold for his country. Currently, he’s ranked No. 3 by the WBC.
