Unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin will meet mandatory challenger and WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The main card will be televised on HBO pay-per-view.
Slowly but surely, boxing’s most feared knockout artist is becoming a known commodity to casual fans. We are of course talking about unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, the undefeated fighter who is 36-0 with 33 KOs. It’s hard getting premier fighters to sign the dotted line to face him, but Danny Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) has stepped up to the plate. The pair will clash under the bright lights at Madison Square Garden, as HBO.
Let’s take a look at the tale of the tape and break down the fight.
Tale of the Tape
36-0, 33 KOs
32-1, 29 KOs
The first and most important question here: “Does Jacobs have any chance?” The answer is yes he does. It’s a long shot, but seeing how Kell Brook landed a few bombs against “GGG” early in their encounter should give the challenger some hope - he’s a much more powerful puncher than Brook.
Golovkin just seems happy to be challenged. “It’s big news for me. I am very excited,” he said. “I think it’s a very big fight and a great fight for you guys to watch. Danny is an amazing fighter. He is a tough opponent and No. 2 in the middleweight division. He is my toughest opponent.”
Though most fans are anxious for a Golovkin-Canelo fight - which will likely take place in the fall - Jacobs is by no means just a stay-busy fight. He has real punching power, though he has yet to face anyone of Golovkin’s cailber yet. But then again, we could say the same thing about GGG. That’s a big reason why this fight is so compelling.
“I’m excited about facing GGG and proving I’m the best middleweight in the world,” Jacobs told ESPN. “On March 18 I’m bringing all the belts back to Brooklyn with me.”
Most recently, Golovkin stopped Kell Brook in the fight round this past September for his 17th straight title defense - it was also his 23rd knockout in a row. Jacobs knocked out Sergio Mora the day before.
Also On the Card
Rumored for the co-feature is a rematch between WBC superflyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Mexican star Carlos Cuedras. Gonzalez is widely regarded as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, so having him on the card would make this a special pay-per-view.
