The Memorial presented by Nationwide gets underway June 1-4, 2017, and will again attract a world-class field. It is one of five tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule that is an “invitational,” and consequently has a field of only 120 players, different than the normal 156.

One of the main features of the tournament is a yearly induction ceremony honoring past golfers. A plaque for each honoree is installed near the clubhouse at Muirfield; Nicklaus himself was the honoree in 2000.

Muirfield Village Golf Club is the only course that has hosted the tournament. Built in 1974 by Jack Nicklaus, the first Memorial event was two years later in 1976 and soon became one of the players’ favorite courses. The layout measures 7,392 yards and plays to a par 72. Jack’s Place is the only venue to host all three of golf’s team match-play showcases; Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup and Presidents Cup.

Last year, unheralded William McGirt picked up his first career PGA Tour win by upstaging Jon Curran in a playoff. They finished at 15-under 273, one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson, with Rory McIlroy among those two shots behind. It was the third straight year the Memorial was won by a first-time PGA TOUR champion, following David Lingmerth and Hideki Matsuyama.

Since 1976, the Memorial has been producing hall of fame type champions that include tournament host Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Greg Norman, Ernie Els and Jim Furyk, while Tiger Woods who has won it a record five times.

Muirfield Village golf course

Muirfield Village is a tough golf course and it is as challenging as any in the world.

The fairways may be wide, but you have to hit it to the correct side to get a good angle at the pin. Plus, the greens are really tough.

The first tournament was played in 1976, and some consider The Memorial the fifth PGA major.

Muirfield Village has been consistently ranked in the Top 20 in the United States and Top 50 in the world since it opened. Voted the No. 1 course in golf-rich Ohio.
