The Memorial presented by Nationwide gets underway June 1-4, 2017, and will again attract a world-class field. It is one of five tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule that is an “invitational,” and consequently has a field of only 120 players, different than the normal 156.
One of the main features of the tournament is a yearly induction ceremony honoring past golfers. A plaque for each honoree is installed near the clubhouse at Muirfield; Nicklaus himself was the honoree in 2000.
Muirfield Village Golf Club is the only course that has hosted the tournament. Built in 1974 by Jack Nicklaus, the first Memorial event was two years later in 1976 and soon became one of the players’ favorite courses. The layout measures 7,392 yards and plays to a par 72. Jack’s Place is the only venue to host all three of golf’s team match-play showcases; Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup and Presidents Cup.
Last year, unheralded William McGirt picked up his first career PGA Tour win by upstaging Jon Curran in a playoff. They finished at 15-under 273, one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson, with Rory McIlroy among those two shots behind. It was the third straight year the Memorial was won by a first-time PGA TOUR champion, following David Lingmerth and Hideki Matsuyama.
Since 1976, the Memorial has been producing hall of fame type champions that include tournament host Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Greg Norman, Ernie Els and Jim Furyk, while Tiger Woods who has won it a record five times.
The PGA Tour heads north to Dublin, Ohio for the 2017 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. Since 1976 the professionals have flocked to Jack’s Place at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Year after year the tournament attracts a world class betting field and this year is no different as seven of the top 10 and 18 of the top 30 are teeing it up this week. Continue...
