The Grade 1 Florida Derby comes our way from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida on Saturday, March 31, 2018. The race will be a showcase of the world's best horses and jockeys, who all are competing for the coveted title of Florida Derby Winner on their road to the Triple Crown.

Every year, horse bettors gather inside Gulfstream Park to watch 3-year-old thoroughbred horses sprint 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) around a left-handed dirt track. It’s one of the fastest races on dirt, and something you don’t want to miss having action on.

Aside from a $1 million purse, winners of the Florida Derby usually go on to attempt the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, often considered the “most exciting two minutes in sports.”

Part of the second leg of the Kentucky Derby Prep Races - Championship Series, where the first four finishers will receive the following points in their race for the roses: 1st - 100 points, 2nd - 40 points, 3rd - 20 points, 4th - 10 points.

The Florida Derby, along with the Blue Grass Stakes, Wood Memorial and Santa Anita Derby, has been one of the most anticipated prep races for the Kentucky Derby throughout the race's history.

The race started in 1952. In 1957, in a historic race where Gen. Duke equaled the world record 1:46.80, in defeating Bold Ruler, the Florida Derby was established as a major stepping stone to the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown trail.

A total of fifteen winners of the Florida Derby have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby including Orb, Big Brown, Barbaro and Northern Dancer.

The race continues to rise in popularity over the years, along with the significant increase in the race's purse. Standing at $1 million today, the Florida Derby is still one of the richest horse racing stakes.

The two primary preps for the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby are the Holy Bull Stakes and Grade 1 Fountain of Youth Stakes, both of which are run at 1 1/16 miles.
