Week 8 was somewhat of a strange thing in the world of college football. No one in the Top 25 was upset by an unranked team. It's almost to the point that we expect the madness to come from somewhere, though none of that happened last week.
That doesn't mean that there aren't upsets lurking around the corner. On the eve of the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings, there are some massive games on the docket in Week 9 that shouldn't be missed.
The biggest one, of course, is the Penn State/Ohio State duel. This spread has already seen a number of changes, opening softly in Vegas at OSU -7.5 before dipping to -5. BookMaker.eu released the spread at Ohio State -5 and pulled it up to -6 rather quickly. The winner of this game is almost assured of a spot in the first Top 4 of the CFP rankings, while the loser will have a long way to get back to the Top 4 and will need a lot of help to do so.
Many of the rest of the ranked teams that are in action had better watch out. Alabama is off this weekend, but all of No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 TCU, No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 14 N.C. State, No. 15 Washington State, No. 16 Michigan State and No. 21 USC are playing away from home.
The annual Georgia/Florida game in Jacksonville is featuring a two-touchdown spread, the first time the Dawgs have been favored by that many points in this game since before Steve Spurrier ever donned the orange and blue.
Oklahoma State is a 7-point favorite at West Virginia, while TCU is surprisingly only -7 at Iowa State.
Maybe the biggest game of the weekend that is flying a bit off the radar is the N.C. State/Notre Dame game. We obviously don't know what the Selection Committee is thinking at the moment, but there's a real chance that the winner of this game is going to be right in the mix, perhaps even in front of undefeated Wisconsin at this point in the game. The Irish have played against the nation's toughest schedule, while the Wolfpack already have upsets over Louisville and Florida State to their credit. If they can add the Irish to that, next week's game in Raleigh against Clemson is sure to be a mass showdown for the catbird seat in the ACC.
Stanford at Oregon State - 9 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Stanford -21.5
Preview: Reser Stadium isn't generally a site for major college football games. Even though the Oregon State Beavers once again stink and are one of the worst teams in the Pac-12, they're going to get a chance to play on national television on Thursday night when the Stanford Cardinal pay their biannual trip to Corvallis. Continue...
Florida State at Boston College - 8 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Florida State -3.5
Preview: The Florida State Seminoles haven't started 0-3 at home since 1974. They're off to the worst start a preseason AP-Top 3 team has had since in 1984 Pitt Panthers started at 0-5. They've got the longest streak of consecutive seasons in America having played in a bowl game. Yet all of that is clearly in jeopardy now. Continue...
Tulsa at SMU - 9 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Opening Line: SMU -10
Preview: Just when you thought it was possible that the Tulsa Golden Hurricane were going to turn their season around, they went out and were beaten by Connecticut. With six losses already in tote, there's no margin for error left if this team wants to get to a bowl game. A prospective rally would have to start with an upset of the SMU Mustangs on Friday night. Continue...
Miami at North Carolina - 12 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Miami -20
Preview: The Miami Hurricanes are continuing to blow right through their schedule. For the first time since moving over to the ACC, the Canes are the class of the ACC Coastal Division and legitimately have the look of a National Championship contender.
Going on the road is never easy in conference play, but the North Carolina Tar Heels have been rather toothless all season long and shouldn't put up much of a fight. Continue...
Wisconsin at Illinois - 12 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Wisconsin -26
Preview: The Illinois Fighting Illini really should have a new quarterback for the third time this season. They blew Cam Thomas' redshirt in his freshman year, and though he played sparingly last week against Minnesota, he clearly is the future of this program. Continue...
Oklahoma State at West Virginia - 12 p.m. ET (ABC)
Opening Line: Oklahoma State -7
Preview: The West Virginia Mountaineers might feel like they're on the outside of the Big XII title race, but they're still firmly in the mix, even with two losses out of the chute. Saturday's game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys will likely effectively be a conference title eliminator, especially with TCU off to its 4-0 start in conference play. Continue...
Texas at Baylor - 12 p.m. ET (ESPNU)
Opening Line: Texas -10.5
Preview: It's hard to believe that the Baylor Bears are still the only team in the Power Five without a single win this season. There will be a shot for reprieve next week against Kansas, but this week against the Texas Longhorns will probably be more of the same. The Horns have been through the gauntlet in recent weeks and will be thrilled to get some respite by playing against one of the worst teams in college football. Continue...
Penn State at Ohio State - 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Ohio State -5
Preview: If there was any doubt as to just how serious the Penn State Nittany Lions were about reaching the College Football Playoff this year, that doubt was shredded within a few minutes of their game against Michigan last week. The Nittany Lions were tremendous from start to finish in that one and deserved their 42-13 victory. Now comes their biggest test, a trip to the Big House to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes that could ultimately decide the fate of all of the teams in the Big Ten. Continue...
Georgia vs. Florida - 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Georgia -14
Preview: The traditions in the SEC are really like none other, especially this time of year. Right around Halloween every single season, fans from the Sunshine State and the Peach State descend upon Jacksonville for the duel between the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs. UGA has a chance to really put its foot down on the throats of the rest of the SEC East, but Florida has had a history of being a pain in this game, especially when the Dawgs are favored as they are at all of the top online sportsbooks in this one. Continue...
N.C. State at Notre Dame - 3:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
Opening Line: Notre Dame -8.5
Preview: Last week, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish won a College Football Playoff eliminator at home against USC. This week, they're in virtually the exact same spot with the N.C. State Wolfpack coming to town. The winner is going to be in great shape as we head into the final month of the regular season, while the loser is virtually assured to be out of the CFP chase. Continue...
UCLA at Washington - 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN2)
Opening Line: Washington -17
Preview: The Washington Huskies weren't anywhere near the biggest losers in Week 8 of the college football season, but you have to imagine that they were at home watching USC get crushed by Notre Dame, resigned to their fate. The bottom line is that it's going to be really hard to overcome a 13-7 loss to Arizona State two weeks ago and still reach the College Football Playoff for as bad as the Pac-12 has been this season. A win over the UCLA Bruins is a must, but even that probably won't feel like the ultimate triumph for the Huskies. Continue...
Houston at South Florida - 3:45 p.m. ET (ESPNU)
Opening Line: South Florida -10
Preview: The South Florida Bulls are now proud owners of the longest streak of scoring 30+ points in games in FBS history with 24. They're also the holders of the longest winning streak in America at 12 games. All of that will be on the line on Saturday when they take on the Houston Cougars in what might be the biggest test left on the Bulls' docket before a Black Friday showdown at UCF. Continue...
Georgia Tech at Clemson - 8 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN2)
Opening Line: Clemson -15.5
Preview: The Clemson Tigers know that their margin for error the rest of the way in the ACC is nil if they want to contend for the conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. A game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets surely won't be easy, though it should be noted that the game comes on the heels of a bye that gave Clemson two weeks to prepare for Paul Johnson's crazy triple-option assault. Continue...
Texas Tech at Oklahoma - 8 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN2)
Opening Line: Oklahoma -18
Preview: The Oklahoma Sooners have been playing with fire a lot over the course of the last several weeks. They've failed to cover four straight spreads after covering each of their first three, and we have to wonder if they're ripe for the picking when the Texas Tech Red Raiders come to Norman on Saturday night. Continue...
Washington State at Arizona - 9:30 p.m. ET (FS1)
Opening Line: Washington State -3
Preview: The Pac-12 took a major hit last weekend when USC was crushed by Notre Dame. Now, the conference is left without an undefeated team and is void of any big wins outside of its conference. To say that the Washington State Cougars have to be perfect the rest of the way if they want to even have a shot at the College Football Playoff is an understatement. Saturday's test against Arizona could see one of the conference's top contenders go down in flames. Continue...
USC at Arizona State - 10:45 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: USC -3
Preview: The USC Trojans now know that there isn't anything left to play for this season. After getting blasted in South Bend last week, their chances of getting into the College Football Playoff are virtually nil.
If there's a silver lining, it's that the Trojans are still sitting at 4-1 in conference play and control their destiny in the Pac-12 South. Unfortunately for them, this week's foes, the Arizona State Sun Devils can say the same. Continue...
San Diego State at Hawaii - 11:15 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Opening Line: San Diego State -9
Preview: The San Diego State Aztecs have watched their season fall apart in the worst possible way over the course of the last two weeks. They topped out as the No. 19 team in America, but now that they have lost to both Boise State and Fresno State at home, they don't even have a path to winning the Mountain West any longer. It's times like this that a road trip to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors seems like a prospective disaster. Continue...
