Was Herm Edwards the right choice for the Arizona State Sun Devils? We’ll get an answer to that question in Week 8 when his kids play host to the defending Pac-12 champion Stanford Cardinal in a game televised live on ESPN Thursday night. ASU went 5-3 SU but only 4-4 ATS as a host last season with wins coming against Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Arizona in conference play. The lone defeat came against USC. There is talent in the desert once again this season, but is there enough to keep Heisman hopeful Bryce love and company in check? The Cardinal has won five of the last six but failed to cover each of the last two.
The Mountain West Conference hogs the Friday night spotlight in Week 8 with Colorado State set to hit the Smurf Turf to battle the Boise State Broncos, and the Air Force strolling into Sin City to oppose UNLV. Each game could have some fireworks! The Rams and Broncos played to a 59-52 barnburner, while the Falcons and Rebels played to a 34-30 final that just stayed below the 65 point closing total.
Unfortunately, Saturday’s Week 8 college football betting schedule fails to impress. As it stands heading into the regular season, there isn’t a single game we’re salivating over. Things could change as the games start to get played out, but for now, meh!
The game of the week no doubt goes down in the B1G with the Michigan Wolverines invading East Lansing to do battle with the Michigan State Spartans. Mark Dantonio has had Harbaugh’s number winning two of the three overall clashes while covering the CFB odds in all three. MSU went into Ann Arbor last season and came out with the 14-10 outright win as 12.5 point underdogs. Like the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, you bet on Sparty in this rivalry as they’ve covered the closing number each of the last 10 times these in-state rivals locked horns.
Alabama traveling to Knoxville to take on Tennessee is always fun. At least for fans of the Crimson Tide under Nick Saban’s watch. The defending champs haven’t lost to the Vols since 2006. Since then, they’ve rattled off 11 straight wins and did so once again last season when they trounced the Vols 45-7 as 37 point Tuscaloosa chalk. Failing to cover that lofty impost moved Tennessee to 3-8 ATS since it last toppled the Tide on the scoreboard. Adding insult to injury, Bama has won each of its last five visits to Rocky Top and covered seven of its last eight!
The biggest Big 12 matchup of Week 8 finds the Oklahoma Sooners going into Fort Worth to battle the TCU Horned Frogs. Gary Patterson’s kids are expected to give Boomer Sooner a run for the B12 money with the Horny Toads +700 dogs to win the conference and OU the favorites at +140. TCU was runner-ups to the Sooners last season in winning 11 games. They went undefeated at home (3-4 ATS), but got destroyed in both meetings with Oklahoma. The first saw them drop a 38-20 decision in Norman, and they were then pounded 41-17 in the B12 title game as touchdown underdogs. Since joining the conference, TCU has only beaten Oklahoma once at home through three tries (1-2 ATS).
The Houston/Navy game is a big one in the AAC West, as will be the Utah State/Wyoming tilt in the Mountain West. A number of games in the Pac-12 could deliver some exciting finishes with Arizona set to square off against UCLA, Oregon traveling to Pullman to face Wazzu, and Washington hosting Colorado. But the game of the week in conference will go down in Salt Lake City where the South division rival USC Trojans and Utah Utes will crack skulls.
These teams played to a thrilling 28-27 final a season ago in a game that saw USC battle back from a 21-7 halftime deficit and ultimately win in the game’s closing seconds. It was a tough one for Kyle Whittingham’s kids to accept, so you know they’ll be out for blood in this rematch. The home team has dominated the recent proceedings winning each of the last four skirmishes, while going 3-1 against the closing number. The over cashed in for total bettors in each of the last three. Utah has won and covered all three of the meetings at home since becoming a member of the Pac-12 Conference, and won outright in each of the last two. Though all three tilts were expected to be showcased by the defenses, two combined to go over comfortably.
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Tennessee Volunteers, Neyland Stadium – 3:30 p.m. ET ( CBS )
Opening Line: Alabama -28.5, 60.5
Preview: Whether Tua Tagovailoa indeed suits up and plays for the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide is of no concern to linemakers at BookMaker.eu. Nick Saban’s kids are enormous favorites to log a twelfth straight win over the non-division rival Tennessee Volunteers. The fact that the Vols just came up with the biggest live betting win of the Jeremy Pruitt era likely plays a role as well. A letdown is sure to come. Rocky Top hasn’t experienced a win over Bama dating back to 2006, and that won’t be changing come Saturday. Continue...
Colorado Buffaloes vs. Washington Huskies, Husky Stadium – 3:30 p.m. ET ( FOX )
Opening Line: Washington -15, O/U 52
Preview: The Pac-12 may have lost its only hope at getting a team into the college football playoff when the Washington Huskies fell to the Ducks last week. It was their second loss of the season and they also dropped to 2-5 ATS. UW still has a shot at the North title but will have to move on without their leading rusher as Myles Gaskins sustained a shoulder injury against Oregon. News of the injury didn’t affect the opening line with the Huskies opening as a 15-point favorite against the visiting Colorado Buffaloes, who suffered their first loss of the season last week. Continue...
Michigan Wolverines vs. Michigan State Spartans, Spartan Stadium – 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Michigan -6.5, 47.5
Preview: Ten straight and counting. That’s how many games in a row the Michigan State Spartans have covered against the hated rival Michigan Wolverines. They’ve been automatic live betting wagers to this point, but does Jim Harbaugh have the squad at hand to get the best of Mark Dantonio in East Lansing a second straight time? Linemakers believe that to be the case installing the maize and blue decisive road chalk, and the road team has come out on top in each of the last three meetings. Continue...
