The 2018 college football season got off to an exciting start last week!
We saw some offenses that lit up the scoreboards, some defenses that held their ground and and a few notable upsets, but now, we head to week 2 of the college football season. And it looks like we could be in line for more action-packed college football games this weekend.
Last week, we were pretty darn good overall. Not saying you should have listened to us on your bets, just saying if you did, you would have beat your online sportsbook.
The second week of the 2018 college football betting season kicks off Friday night in Big D where the SMU Mustangs will attempt to put an end to an ugly six game losing streak to the in-state rival TCU Horned Frogs. The Mustangs don’t figure to be a major player in the AAC futures race with SMU currently sitting behind Temple, Navy, USF, Houston, Memphis and UCF on the betting odds. On the other hand, the Horny Toads have CFP aspirations after winning 11 games a season ago and finishing runner-up to the Oklahoma Sooners. Gary Patterson’s kids will be decisive chalk, but the Ponies gave them an early scare before fizzling out in the fourth quarter last season.
Saturday’s slate kicks off with a crucial non-conference clash in the “Little Apple” where Bill Snyder’s K-State Wildcats will attempt to hold serve against a veteran Mississippi State Bulldogs outfit that won nine games a season ago. New head coach Joe Moorhead has a solid offense at his disposal with Nick Fitzgerald and the running back tandem of Aeris Williams ( 1,100 yards ) and Kylin Hill. The Moorhead signing didn’t receive much fanfare in the offseason with bigger programs landing big name coaches, but he could prove to be the best of the bunch. This Week 2 tilt could be the perfect backdrop to bring his prowess to the forefront.
Michigan hosts Western Michigan. Arizona travels to Houston. Duke and Northwestern meet for the fourth straight year with the Wildcats looking to avenge an ugly 41-17 incurred in Durham last season. The one tilt that will attract some solid action will no doubt be the tussle in Norman between the UCLA Bruins and Oklahoma Sooners. Everyone is waiting to see what Chip Kelly has up his sleeve with his potent offensive mind now back in the college ranks. Unfortunately, Boomer Sooner is likely the last team he wanted to run up against so early in the season. This will be the program’s first meeting since 2005.
The afternoon slate revs up with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights playing the role of sacrificial lamb at Ohio State, and Colorado paying Lincoln a visit to battle the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a matchup of former Big 12 rivals. The matchup set to receive a bulk of the action finds the Georgia Bulldogs going into Columbia to run with South Carolina. The Gamecocks took a major step forward last season after winning nine games and going to a bowl game. Will Muschamp has done wonders with the program since his arrival a few seasons back, but has yet to solve the riddle that has been the Dawgs losing both meetings by an average of 14 points per game ( 1-1 ATS ). A win in this spot would turn the East division on its head.
The Iowa State/Iowa matchup always brings in a bunch of betting action on a yearly basis. This year’s installment should be no different. Kirk Ferentz has a capable quarterback in Nate Stanley after throwing for 26 touchdowns last season as well as one of the best defensive fronts in the Big Ten. The Cyclones will counter with stud running back David Montgomery who rushed for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, as well as a stout defense that ranked No. 26 in scoring defense a year ago. Iowa has dominated the recent rivalry winning four of the last five ( 3-1-1 ATS ), but the teams played to a thrilling 44-41 final a year ago which resulted in a push for those that wagered on the game.
The early evening slate will have everyone tuning into ESPN to catch the Clemson Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies in a matchup pitting the SEC against the ACC. Dabo’s kids will be installed road chalk in that one, and the Tigers went 4-1 straight up and 3-2 against the spread in that role a season ago. This will be a huge game for Jimbo Fisher and his staff, but the season might be too much in its infancy for his squad to pull a shocker in front of the 12th Man.
The Kentucky/Florida, Penn State/PITT and MSU/ASU matchups will no doubt get some betting action throughout the night, but the main attraction of the evening slate will be the Pac-12 title game rematch between the USC Trojans and Stanford Cardinal. Each is expected to once again compete for division honors, so this tilt will no doubt be heated from the opening tip. Both squads have holes to fill and questions that need answering. USC won both meetings last season and came a half point away from covering in each. Think Bryce Love and company come to play in this one?
UCLA Bruins vs. Oklahoma Sooners, Memorial Stadium – 1:00 p.m. ET ( FOX )
Opening Line: Check Back Later
Preview: College football bettors are sure to flock to the Oklahoma Sooners in this Week 2 tilt against the CFB lines after the egg the UCLA Bruins laid at home in Chip Kelly’s debut as head coach. Especially after Boomer Sooner scored the most points in a half ( 42 ) since 2008! But with the Bruins quarterback woes currently keeping the line from hitting the board, be prepared to eat a ton of chalk if in fact you plan on backing Kyler Murray and the boys. Continue...

USC Trojans vs. Stanford Cardinal, Stanford Stadium – 7:30 p.m. ET ( FOX )
Opening Line: Stanford -4, 53
Preview: The Stanford Cardinal no doubt had this Week 2 tilt against the USC Trojans circled on their calendars after falling to their hated rival on the CFB odds in last year’s Pac-12 title game. Making it an even bigger game for the home team is the fact that USC swept the season rivalry by taking them down in the regular season at the Coliseum as well. Stanford has come out on top three of the last four times it welcomed the Trojans into Stanford Stadium, and will be out for double revenge as favorites! Continue...
