Drama will continue to build over the course of the rest of the college football season. That said, Week 10 marks the first time that we're all using the College Football Playoff rankings as the ultimate road map for the rest of the campaign. There are plenty of teams that are currently off the pace for the discussion for the CFP, but there isn't such a thing as a team at the top that doesn't have a challenging contest in Week 10.
Alabama and Georgia figure to take the two top spots in the first CFP rankings on Tuesday night. These two teams are both at home in Week 10, but as we've seen over the course of this season, home field advantage doesn't always mean much of anything. The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs have to face LSU and South Carolina respectively in games that could prove to be dangerous.
Let's remember that LSU and South Carolina are both spooky two-loss teams. The argument could be made that either of these teams winning out could put them into the CFP discussion. LSU controls its own destiny in the SEC West, and with a win over Auburn already to its credit, a second upset of Alabama would leave it in the driver's seat with just three games left to be played. South Carolina would still need Georgia to lose once more to ultimately win the SEC East, but the Dawgs still have to visit Auburn next week and could easily be beaten in two games in a row.
Over in the Big Ten, Ohio State is fresh off of its wild comeback victory over Penn State. The Buckeyes really shouldn't lose the rest of the way and should ultimately make the CFP, but they have a game that could change all of that on Saturday against Iowa. Let's remember that the Hawkeyes nearly beat Penn State here at Kinnick Stadium a few weeks ago, and they'd love nothing more than to derail the Buckeyes.
As far as the Nittany Lions go, their National Championship dreams hang in the balance at Michigan State this week. A second straight loss to Sparty, and it'll be curtains on their season.
But maybe the biggest game will come in the Big XII. There are four teams sporting 4-1 records through their first five conference games, and though there isn't an undefeated team left in the bunch, there's a good chance that this conference has four of the top 15 or so teams when the first rankings come out.
The two top teams of that bunch, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will square off in Bedlam on Saturday in Stillwater. The winner of this game is going to be well-positioned to ultimately reach the CFP if that team can finish up at 12-1. That said, that's the only path to the playoff for either side, and a loss will relegate the loser to merely hoping to get into the first reincarnation of the Big XII Championship Game as a two-loss team.
Miami (Ohio) at Ohio - 8 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Opening Line: Check Back Later
Preview: Mid-major conferences do everything they can to get some exposure in the middle of weeks. With the World Series drawing towards a close and the NBA season just starting off, it's the perfect time to get some MACtion underway in the middle of the week. The Ohio Bobcats have the highest-octane offense in the MAC this year, and they'll look to continue their march towards the MAC East title when they take on the Miami Redhawks on Tuesday. Continue...
College Football Wednesday, November 1, 2017
Central Michigan at Western Michigan - 8 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Opening Line: Western Michigan -7
Preview: The Western Michigan Broncos might not be perfect for the second straight season, but they still have a shot of winning the MAC for the second straight campaign. To stay the course, they have no choice but to beat the Central Michigan Chippewas in a rare Wednesday night affair in Kalamazoo. Continue...
Navy at Temple - 8 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Navy -8
Preview: Last season, the Owls did a big favor for the College Football Playoff Selection Committee by beating the Navy Midshipmen in the AAC Championship Game. That victory removed any chance of Navy playing in the New Year's Six and kept the release of the last CFP rankings on schedule instead of forcing them back to see if the Middies would beat Army the next week. Continue...
Memphis at Tulsa - 8 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Opening Line: Memphis -12
Preview: For all of the talk about the UCF Knights and their pending position in the College Football Playoffs rankings, let's not forget that the Memphis Tigers have a great shot of playing in the New Year's Six as well. If the Tigers can win out, starting with a win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Friday night, they'll be the team representing the Group of Five in one of college football's biggest bowl games. Continue...
UCLA at Utah - 9:30 p.m. ET (FS1)
Opening Line: Check Back Later
Preview: There was a point that both the UCLA Bruins and Utah Utes were ranked in the Top 25. Though neither one was ever really a player for the College Football Playoff, both thought they had a shot in the Pac-12 South this season. Instead, both clubs have slipped to 4-4, and both should merely be worrying about qualifying for a bowl game. The loser of this one will have a significantly harder time reaching six wins than the winner will. Continue...
Penn State at Michigan State - 12 p.m. ET (FOX)
Opening Line: Penn State -9
Preview: The Penn State Nittany Lions had their hearts ripped out last week at the Horseshoe by Ohio State. They’ve still got a chance to ultimately reach the College Football Playoff this year, but their margin for error is now officially nil. A win over the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing is an absolute must at this point. Continue...
Wisconsin at Indiana - 12 p.m. ET (ABC)
Opening Line: Wisconsin -9
Preview: Not that there was ever any doubt, but the Wisconsin Badgers are set to punch their ticket to the Big Ten Championship Game in December. They've run through their first eight games of the season without much of a challenge, and if they can beat an Indiana Hoosiers side that has kicked off conference play with five consecutive losses, the Badgers will be on their way to Indianapolis. Continue...
South Carolina at Georgia - 3:30 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Georgia -23.5
Preview: The Georgia Bulldogs have run away from the SEC East, winning their first five games and effectively already punching a ticket to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game. That said, if the South Carolina Gamecocks happen to come to Athens and pull off the shocker, the Dawgs will have to win their last two SEC duels against Auburn and Kentucky to be assured of a trip to Atlanta. Continue...
Ohio State at Iowa - 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: Ohio State -17
Preview: The Ohio State Buckeyes have to be feeling pretty darn good about themselves at this point. They've taken control of the Big Ten East by beating Penn State, and they did so in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion. That said, no trip to Kinnick Stadium is ever easy, and the Iowa Hawkeyes would love nothing more than to boot the Buckeyes out of the CFP discussion as quickly as they got themselves back into the chase. Continue...
Clemson at N.C. State - 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC)
Opening Line: Clemson -7
Preview: Most expect to see the Clemson Tigers either just on the inside or just on the outside of the first College Football Playoff rankings that are set to come out on Tuesday night. The bottom line is that Clemson holds its destiny in its hands at this point even after losing at Syracuse on Friday the 13th. Continue...
Oklahoma at Oklahoma State - 4 p.m. ET (FS1)
Opening Line: Oklahoma State -3.5
Preview: Bedlam isn't a game that is usually played the first week of November, but the schedule-makers are trying something new this season with the possibility that the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners could be playing against each other in the Big XII Championship Game the first week of November. That doesn't take away any of the hype that is rightfully surrounding this Top 10 showdown. Continue...
Texas at TCU - 7:15 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: TCU -8
Preview: The TCU Horned Frogs' perfect season went by the wayside last Saturday when they were beaten by Iowa State. All of a sudden, a team that seemed to be a sure lock for a spot in the first top four of the College Football Playoff rankings is now possibly looking at a spot outside of the top-10 and might not be able to do anything to get back into the discussion. Continue...
LSU at Alabama - 8 p.m. ET (CBS)
Opening Line: Alabama -20
Preview: The scene of the SEC West changes every year the first Saturday of November when the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide play against each other. The Tide might be the best team in the nation at the moment, but even they can lose control of their standing in the SEC West if they slip up at home against one of the sneakier teams in the land. Continue...
Virginia Tech at Miami - 8 p.m. ET (ABC)
Opening Line: Virginia Tech -2
Preview: This one may as well be called the ACC Coastal Division Championship Game.
The Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies are the only two teams left in the Coastal Division who have a shot at the league title. They're also two of the three teams left in this conference with any hope whatsoever of winning the National Championship. All of that will go up in smoke for the loser on Saturday in what will surely be an elimination game in South Beach. Continue...
Arizona at USC - 10:45 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Opening Line: USC -10
Preview: College football is a funny game sometimes. Rich Rodriguez was left for dead a few weeks ago, and it was assumed that he was going to be dismissed as the coach of the Arizona Wildcats in short order. Then the Cats went on a four-game winning streak, got back in the hunt in the Pac-12 South and created a quarterback who might be looking at a late push towards the Heisman Trophy. Continue...
