A full Saturday slate of week one NCAA football may seem like a lite years away, but this year's opening weekend of College football is jammed packed with great matchups that should once again make it worth the wait.
The first games of the season will kick off on Saturday, August 25 with more games on Thursday, August 30, and continuing through Labor Day weekend. College football betting fans should be excited for five consecutive days of games, which feature both conference matchups and major neutral-site clashes.
For those of you that’ve been clamoring for college pigskin ever since the Alabama Crimson Tide ousted the Georgia Bulldogs in overtime of the National Championship game, the wait is over. College football betting is back! That means the Gamblers Palace engine will rev back up with mass articles covering all the crucial games of every week. You’ll find a list of the matchups covered down below, but here’s a little breakdown of the ones that caught our eyes before the season kicked off.
Thursday night's lineup is loaded with a ton of blah, but the one matchup were looking forward to pits the Northwestern Wildcats up against the Purdue Boilermakers in a game that very well could predict where both clubs end up in the West Division standings at year’s end. These teams finished No. 2 and No. 3 respectively last season and each was a boon to college football bettor’s bankrolls in going 9-4 against the spread. The Wildcats won a low scoring 23-13 decision as 6 point home chalk last year to move to 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS over the last four meetings. The Boilers have failed to win or cover each of the last three times they hosted this division rivalry.
Syracuse at Western Michigan, Utah State at Michigan State, Western Kentucky at Wisconsin, San Diego State at Stanford and Colorado vs. Colorado State headline Friday night’s decent sized slate. The Orange is favored on the road for the first time since 2015. Sparty has failed to cover as 24+ point home chalk each of the last three times. Same goes for Wisconsin who hasn’t covered 34+ point spreads at home each of the last three times. After losing outright at SDST last season, you can bet your bottom dollar Stanford will be way up for its season opener against the Aztecs. Colorado’s dominated its recent rivalry with CSU winning and covering three straight as well as seven of the last eight!
Ohio State opens its 2018 campaign against Oregon State. They’re near 40 point favorites. Urban Meyer’s kids likely won’t break a sweat. The same can’t be said for Texas who has to go into D.C. and battle an upstart Maryland Terrapins at FedEx Field that took baby steps in the right direction last season. This will be a decent litmus test for Tom Herman’s squad who is expected to be the Oklahoma Sooners biggest obstacle at winning the Big 12 a fourth straight season.
All eyes will be on Hotlanta for Saturday’s afternoon slate where the Washington Huskies of the Pac-12 and Auburn Tigers of the SEC will collide. The victor will definitely have a leg up of improving their College Football Playoff chances with each expected to be major players in their respective conferences. Though U-Dub won 10 games last season, it was a disappointing campaign after Jake Browning and company partook in the CFP the previous season. Auburn feels as if it has some unfinished business after beating Alabama in the regular season, but falling to Georgia in ugly fashion the following week in the SEC title game. Linemakers currently have the game lined at -3 in favor of the Tigers, and it should be a heck of an early season matchup you won’t want to miss!
Tennessee versus West Virginia at Bank of America Stadium offers up some intrigue in the late afternoon slate, as does North Carolina and Cal from Memorial Stadium.
College football heavyweights will grace the air waves on Saturday night when the Wolverines and Fighting Irish do battle from Notre Dame Stadium. Jim Harbaugh has a heck of a defense returning in 2018, and looks to finally have a quarterback in Ole Miss transfer Shea Patterson. The Irish have many question marks on the offensive side of the ball, but the defense could be one of Brian Kelly’s best since taking over the gig in South Bend. These teams haven’t met on the gridiron since 2014. The home team has come out on top in each of the last four meetings ( 4-0 ATS ).
The one thing Louisville has going for itself heading into its Week 1 matchup with the defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide is that the game will be held at a neutral venue. Unfortunately, that’s all it has going with the post Lamar Jackson era set to begin against what will no doubt be one of the best defenses in college football. Nick Saban’s kids are heavily favored to win this game, and enter the season the +175 favorites to win back-to-back national titles. Louisville’s run defense is surely going to get tested in this one. Bama will be a popular choice of CFB bettors in this tilt.
The U put itself back on the college football map a season ago after compiling a 10 win season to win the Coastal Division and punch its ticket to the Orange Bowl. Not bad for Mark Richt’s second go round in Coral Gables! LSU had a season of ups and downs under Ed Orgeron last season. Still, the Tigers were one of just six teams in the SEC that produced winning marks against the linemakers. With both of these team’s defenses likely well ahead of the offenses, Sunday night’s tilt in JerryWorld should be competitive and low scoring.
Florida State had a season to sweep under the rug a season ago. Jimbo Fisher is out, and Willie Taggart is in. The Noles are lined as 6 point home chalk for their Labor Day tilt with the ACC rival Virginia Tech Hokies. How these programs haven’t crossed paths on the gridiron since 2012 is beyond us! With that, Justin Fuente has much to prove in this spot now in his third season overlooking the team from Blacksburg. Still, FSU has been money in the bank in these conference spots at home where they’ve gone 31-3 SU and 20-14 ATS the last five seasons.
The 2018 College football season is here, and to reward you for your patience, Gamblers Palace handicapping team, will have one of the best opening weeks of NCAA football predictions on tap between Thursday evening and Monday night.
