Especially in the era of the College Football Playoff, no one is winning or losing a National Championship in Week 1 of the season. That said, the foundation is clearly laid in a lot of these big games across the country for what will surely be huge seasons or campaigns that will go up in flames quickly.
The biggest game of all is clearly the Alabama/Florida State game in Atlanta in the first truly historic event at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Crimson Tide and Seminoles are both amongst the favorites to play in the College Football Playoff this season, and no one would be all that shocked if ultimately, this was a Preview of the National Championship Game. Jalen Hurts and Deondre Francois are both young, second-year quarterbacks who are Heisman Trophy favorites, and both of these defenses are chock full of NFL-caliber talent. Don't think for one second that this isn't a game that FSU can win as well, though Alabama is the rightful favorite at -7.
Another SEC West team, LSU, was given a bit of an assist to start the season. The Tigers were originally supposed to play against BYU in Houston, but thanks to Hurricane Harvey, those plans have changed, and the game has been moved to New Orleans. The betting line jumped from the Bayou Bengals -12.5 to -14.5 in a hurry, and that number could raise as time goes on.
Let's also not forget that Week 1 is a big week for games throughout the five days from NCAA Thursday night football through Labor Day. Thursday's slate is relatively light but will include Ohio State opening up its campaign against Indiana. Friday night's showcase will pit Colorado and Colorado State against each other.
After Saturday's bonanza, Sunday will feature a pair of battles in primetime. West Virginia and Virginia Tech will meet in Landover, while UCLA and Texas A&M will meet for the second straight season after last year's overtime thriller in College Station. The whole weekend concludes with Tennessee and Georgia Tech in the second game of the week at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The 2017 College football season is here, and to reward you for your patience, Gamblers Palace handicapping team, will have one of the best opening weeks of NCAA football predictions on tap between Thursday evening and Monday night.
NCAA Football - Thursday, August 31, 2017
New Mexico State at Arizona State
Opening Line: Arizona State -25, O/U 67
Preview: Any time you see the New Mexico State Aggies on someone's schedule early in the season, you've got to think that you're in for a squash match. The Aggies aren't afraid to go up against anyone, even if they know they're going to get their butts kicked. The payday will be a good one against the Arizona State Sun Devils, though the end result surely isn't going to be nearly as lucrative. Continue...
NCAA Football - Friday, September 1, 2017
Colorado State vs. Colorado
Opening Line: Colorado -7, O/U 66.5
Preview: The Colorado State Rams have a huge opportunity this season. They've already not just beaten, but beaten the snot out of one Pac-12 team this year. Now, they have a chance to claim a second straight Pac-12 scalp against their rivals, the Colorado Buffaloes in a game to be played at a neutral site in Denver. Continue...
NCAA Football - Saturday, September 2, 2017
Appalachian State at Georgia
Opening Line: Georgia -13.5, O/U 47
Preview: The Georgia Bulldogs know they're on upset alert in Week 1 of the college football season. They've got the Appalachian State Mountaineers coming "Between the Hedges," and with that comes a team that has gone from the loveable upset squad against Michigan at the Big House to one that thinks it can legitimately challenge for a spot in the New Year's Six this season. Continue..
Troy at Boise State
Opening Line: Boise State -12.5, O/U 57.5
Preview: The Boise State Broncos have sort of fallen off a little bit over the course of the last several seasons. They're still one of the truly elite mid-major teams in the nation, but they have only been to a major bowl game once since the 2009 season. The first duel of the season against the Troy Trojans promises to be a tough one for both teams. Continue...
Arkansas State at Nebraska
Opening Line: Nebraska -16.5, O/U 48
Preview: The best news for the Nebraska Cornhuskers is that they play in the Big Ten West. As a result, even in a season that figures to be a little bit more of a transition year than a competitive year, the Children of the Corn will probably have a shot to at least win their side of the conference. An opening game against the Arkansas State Red Wolves could be sneaky, but most don't suspect Nebraska to ultimately lose. Continue...
Georgia Southern at Auburn
Opening Line: Auburn -35, O/U 51.5
Preview: Gus Malzahn and his Auburn Tigers are officially back. It's been a while since War Eagle was a legitimate National Championship contender, but the time at the bottom appears to be over. This opening game against the Georgia Southern Eagles has its challenges, but this shouldn't ultimately be a tripping point for a team that thinks it has a shot to play big boy football in December and January this year. Continue...
South Alabama at Ole Miss
Opening Line: Ole Miss -27, O/U 59
Preview: No team had a more frustrating offseason than the Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebs were crushed by the NCAA for violations involving the Hugh Freeze regime, and Freeze was effectively forced out of the job after being tied to making phone calls involving an escort service. Yet the show must go on in Oxford, and the Rebels' first game will come against the hungry South Alabama Jaguars. Continue...
