The quarterback carousel started up again for the Cleveland Browns, but the results were similar to what pained fans have seen most of the time since they rejoined the league. Hue Jackson benched DeShone Kizer for last week’s game, partly because the second-round pick led the league with nine interceptions. Kevin Hogan, the 28th different starter since 1999, had one-third of that total in his first NFL start, tossing three picks in a loss to the Texans.
The Browns have now lost 16 straight road games and they visit the Tennessee Titans for a Week 7 contest. The team had plenty of promise at the beginning of the year with a bounty on draft day and a cache of young players. But instead of progressing they are regressing, doing things they’ve done throughout the miserable tenure of Jackson. The coach continues to say he believes in his team and that this group is better than the 1-15 squad from last year, but the results have shown otherwise.
Kizer is still the starter and will return to that role on Sunday. Jackson wanted to give his rookie a different look at the game in hopes that it will help him better understand it. He better hope that strategy works, because there isn’t much else at the position. The Browns did have the 12th pick in this year’s draft but traded it to the Texans, who selected Deshaun Watson. The Browns got an up close look at what they could’ve had when the former Clemson star tossed three touchdown passes in a 33-17 Houston win on Sunday.

Over/Under Total Result: Over 46
The switch to Hogan didn’t make a difference and the offensive struggles continued. The game was tied at 3-3 after Zane Gonzalez made a 41-yard field goal late in the first quarter, but the roof caved in after that. The Browns allowed three touchdowns, Hogan tossed a pick-six and he was guilty of grounding in the endzone that resulted in a safety. By the time the fourth quarter started, the Browns were trailing 33-3 and on their way to a fifth straight ATS loss. Hogan’s TD pass with 63 seconds left made over bettors happy, though.
Week 5: Jets 17, Browns 14
ATS Result: Jets +1.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 41.5
The Browns blew several scoring opportunities in the first half with turnovers and missed field goals, and that’s what bad teams do. They outplayed the Jets but were saddled with a 3-0 deficit at the break. Hogan led the team to a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, giving the Browns their first lead of the season. But they couldn’t build on it and failed to cover for a fourth straight game.
Week 4: Bengals 31, Browns 7
ATS Result: Bengals -3
Over/Under Total Result: Under 41.5
This may have been the worst performance in Jackson’s tenure, and that’s saying something because there have been some whoppers. Plagued by another slow start, the Browns couldn’t recover and were blown out in a game against a team that hadn’t won. The outcome was never in doubt after Cincy took a 21-0 lead at halftime, sending Cleveland to its third straight ATS loss. And a late touchdown didn’t help over backers with the under going to 3-1.
Week 3: Colts 31, Browns 28
ATS Result: Colts +1
Over/Under Total Result: Over 42
There wasn’t much good about this game. The Browns were looking for their first win and were favored for the first time in two years. However, an ugly start put them three touchdowns behind before halftime. The Browns did claw their way back, outscoring the Colts 21-3 the rest of the way, but the damage had already been done in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score.
Week 2: Ravens 24, Browns 10
ATS Result: Ravens +7.5
Over/Under Total Result: Under 39.5
Five drives were thwarted with turnovers and twice the Ravens scored a touchdown following a giveaway while working on a short field. Don’t blame the defense for this loss, they did a solid job containing Joe Flacco, but when faced with the circumstances, the Browns couldn’t hold on. At least they should have confidence in backup QB Kevin Hogan, who directed both scoring drives and threw for 118 yards on his 11 attempts.
Week 1: Steelers 21, Browns 18
ATS Result: Browns +10
Over/Under Total Result: Under 47
The Browns used a late touchdown and two-point conversion to cover the spread, and if they had been able to contain Antonio Brown they would have gotten the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead. It didn’t happen and that’s the difference right now between the clubs. The Steelers put the game away when they had a chance while the Browns were playing catch up all afternoon. The defense was strong and must work around the loss of Garrett for another few games.
Preseason Record: 4-0
ATS Record: 4-0
Over/Under Record: 0-4
The Browns lost all four preseason games last year and went on to lose their first 14 regular season contests. Jackson tried a different strategy this season, trying to instill a winning attitude in his youthful roster. It worked during the exhibition games with Cleveland victorious straight up and ATS in all four outings. It’s a different story once the real games begin and the Browns will try and reverse a downward trend. Cleveland lost all six games to division foes last year and 11 straight dating back to 2015 with an 0-10-1 ATS record.
