Cincinnati Bengals Season Preview / 2018 NFL Bengals Football Odds

Cincinnati Bengals NFL Odds

The Cincinnati Bengals looked like they wanted Marvin Lewis to stick around after winning their final two games of the season and knocking AFC North rival Baltimore from the postseason party with an exhilarating victory on Sunday. It may not be enough for Lewis to return for a 16th season, but at least the Bengals ended a disappointing season on a high note.

Exactly half of the Bengals 14 playoff appearances have been led by Lewis, but after four straight double figure win seasons, two division titles and five consecutive trips to the postseason, the Bengals have fallen on hard times the past two years. They lost nine games for a second straight season, which is the third-highest total under Lewis, and he still has yet to win a playoff game. The team made a strong push at the end of the year with wins over playoff-hopefuls Detroit and Baltimore, and that was enough to convince ownership to keep Lewis around for at least another season.

It’s easy to see why the Bengals struggled this season. The offense labored all year and coordinator Ken Zampese was relieved of his duties after two games where the team failed to score a touchdown. Things improved marginally after that, but the line struggled and first-round pick John Ross did little to help the passing game. With a chance to even their record in a home game against the Steelers in Week 13, Cincy let a 17-0 lead slip away, lost the game and dropped their next two, ending any hopes of a return to the postseason.

2017 Cincinnati Bengals Game Results

Week 17: Bengals 31, Ravens 27

ATS Result: Bengals +8

Over/Under Total Result: Over 40

It would have been understandable if the Bengals gave up after blowing a pair of 14-point leads. Baltimore took the lead in the fourth quarter on a Joe Flacco touchdown pass, but Andy Dalton had the last laugh, leading the Bengals 90-yards with the final 49 coming on a fourth-and-12 pass to Tyler Boyd that resulted in the game-winning score and a second straight outright win.

Week 16: Bengals 26, Lions 17

ATS Result: Bengals +3.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 43.5

The Bengals flipped the script from the previous two weeks and played their best game in some time to win outright. Bernard had 116 yards on the ground and scored the game-clinching touchdown late in the fourth to stop a three-game SU and two-game ATS losing streak. Randy Bullock hit his fourth field goal to give the Bengals the lead and the defense stopped the Lions, getting the ball back for Bernard’s heroics, though it wasn’t enough to cash the over.

Week 15: Vikings 34, Bengals 7

ATS Result: Vikings -12.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 42.5

After Cincy’s first of five first-half three-and-outs, the Vikings drove 75 yards for a touchdown and the Bengals had no response. Cincy gained just 42 yards in the opening two quarters and trailed 24-0 at the break. The Bengals were down 34-0 when Giovanni Bernard scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter and they never came close to covering, dropping their second straight ATS.

Week 14: Bears 33, Bengals 7

ATS Result: Bears +6

Over/Under Total Result: Under 40.5

The Bengals actually had a 7-6 lead after Dalton connected with Brandon LaFell late in the first quarter, but they failed to score again and the Bears ran all over the hobbled defense, sending Cincy to the ATS loss. Turnovers on consecutive possession in the second half gave the Bears a lift and they cashed in on those miscues, taking any hope of a comeback away from the Bengals.

Week 13: Steelers 23, Bengals 20

ATS Result: Bengals +4.5

Over/Under Total Result: Over 42.5

The Bengals scored on three of their four first half possessions to build a 17-0 lead late in the first half. But with time running out, they allowed the Steelers to kick a field goal as time expired. It seemed innocent at the time, but a three-and-out on their first possession in the third gave the Steelers the ball and a score changed the momentum. Cincy did squat on their last three drives and the snowball gathered steam. Pittsburgh scored the final 13 points with the game-winner coming with no time left.

Week 12: Bengals 30, Browns 16

ATS Result: Bengals -7.5

Over/Under Total Result: Over 39

The Bengals have reached the 30-point mark in a game twice this season with both coming against Cleveland. Mixon was the catalyst in this one and Cincy put together is best rushing day of the season. Clinging to a 23-16 lead late in the fourth, Mixon scored on an 11-yard run, sealing the victory and covering the 7.5-point spread while cashing the over.

Week 11: Bengals 20, Broncos 17

ATS Result: Bengals +2.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 37.5

Two of Cincy’s three scores were set up by turnovers on a short field and Dalton made Denver pay. Otherwise the offense was as inept as the Broncos. It wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was a win against a struggling team and the Bengals kept their slim postseason hopes alive with the outright victory. The total came in low and the teams did everything they could to cash the under.

Week 10: Titans 24, Bengals 20

ATS Result: Bengals +4.5

Over/Under Total Result: Over 40.5

The Bengals were close to pulling off the upset, taking a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter on Dalton’s 70-yard scoring pass to A.J. Green. But needing one stop from the defense, they couldn’t get it. Cincy allowed the Titans to march 73-yards and gave up the game-winning score with under a minute to play to cash the over. The Bengals did cover the 4.5-point spread, snapping a streak of three straight ATS losses.

Week 9: Jaguars 23, Bengals 7

ATS Result: Jaguars -6

Over/Under Total Result: Under 38

Beating a good Jags team on the road required everyone to play at a high level. The Bengals lost their best offensive weapon with a first half ejection and they did little the rest of the game dropping their third straight ATS. Green had just one catch before his altercation and the offense never threatened, amassing just 148 total yards. Cincy allowed just one offensive touchdown and that was enough to keep the score below the closing total.

Week 8: Bengals 24, Colts 23

ATS Result: Colts +11

Over/Under Total Result: Over 44

Dunlap got the Bengals a win with his pick-six, but it wasn’t enough to cover the 11-point spread as Cincy lost for the second straight time ATS. The offense had a hard time manufacturing yards against a bad Colts defense, managing just 276 for the game. But the production was timely and the defense helped cash the over for a second time in as many games.

Week 7: Steelers 29, Bengals 14

ATS Result: Steelers -4

Over/Under Total Result: Over 40

After keeping pace for the first 22 minutes, the Bengals went silent offensively, allowing the Steelers to pull away and failed to cover the 4-point spread. Dalton took a beating in the second half when the Bengals managed just one first down. He was sacked four times, hit seven others and tossed a pair of picks that ended any hope of a win.

Week 6: BYE

Week 5: Bengals 20, Bills 16

ATS Result: Bengals -3

Over/Under Total Result: Under 39

Green nearly helped give it away, but in the end the Bengals got their biggest playmaker involved to get their second straight win and third straight ATS. Dalton found his favorite target for 189 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown and another long pass play to set up a score. The defense also shut down the Bills and has been underrated all season leading the under to a 4-1 record.

Week 4: Bengals 31, Browns 7

ATS Result: Bengals -3

Over/Under Total Result: Under 41.5

The offense has found another gear since the coaching change and Dalton looks like a different player. He was masterful against Cleveland leading the Bengals to an easy cover on the 3-point line. As well as the offense played, the defense was even better and has been overlooked. The group allowed just over 200 yards of offense and pitched a shutout until late in the fourth, cashing the under for the third time.

Week 3: Packers 27, Bengals 24 (OT)

ATS Result: Bengals +7

Over/Under Total Result: Over 47.5

This one is going to leave a mark. The Bengals allowed Rodgers to maneuver 75 yards in the final minutes for the game-tying touchdown. Then they went three-and-out on the first overtime possession, giving the ball back to the Pack. Rodgers connected on a 72-yard bomb to set up the game-winning field goal. Cincy covered the 7-point spread, but it was little consolation after letting one get away.

Week 2: Texans 13, Bengals 9

ATS Result: Texans +5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 38

The offense sputtered again, failing to get its first touchdown of the season and settling for three Randy Bullock field goals. The Bengals did complete a pass in the endzone, but Tyler Eifert stepped out of bounds before reestablishing position and was the first to touch the ball. The score was nullified and the Bengals settled for three. Cincy did enough defensively, but without any help from the offense, the under cashed for a second straight game.

Week 1: Ravens 20, Bengals 0

ATS Result: Ravens +2.5

Over/Under Total Result: Under 41.5

With the weapons the Bengals have on offense and the career path of Dalton, we should chalk up the opener to just a poor outing against an excellent defensive team. Houston is strong defensively as well, but you can expect Cincy to make adjustments for a cleaner outing by Dalton. The odds of winning decrease with every turnover and the Bengals gave it up five times. That’s not good. But there’s a strong chance it doesn’t happen again.

Pre Season Cincinnati Bengals Game Results

Preseason Record: 1-3

ATS Record: 2-2

Over/Under Record: 1-3

It was a strange last season for the Bengals with many players missing out on the postseason for the first time in their careers. It wouldn’t be a stretch to think this team can regain its winning ways and return to relevance, but there are several question marks surrounding the roster. And opening against the Ravens isn’t the worst they could ask for. Cincy has won five straight at home over the Bengals going 4-1 ATS in that span, and the Bengals are 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall with their division rival.
