Two major changes have been made for the second running of the $13.9 million Diamond Mile to be run on Saturday, December 8, this year.
First of these is that the winners of the Jamaica Derby, the Superstakes, Caribbean Sprint Championship and Invitational Mile will get automatic entry into the race.
The second change is that instead of lifetime earnings, the other horses will earn their place based on their year-to-date earnings from January to December. Earnings gained from claiming races will not be considered.
This year's Diamond Mile purse has seen an increase of US $2000 or just over JA $400,000 based on the current exchange rate, bringing the overall purse to $13.9 million.
Last year, the winner, subsequent 'Horse of the Year' SEEKING MY DREAM, received a record $6.5 million, while lucrative purse money was paid to the first 10 past the post, an unprecedented move. In addition, a commemorative trophy valued at $500,000 donated by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission will be won outright by the owner of the winner, while the winning trainer, jockey, breeder and groom will also receive trophies.
Caymanas Park is a dirt horse track in Portmore, Saint Catherine, Jamaica that features thoroughbred racing and is open Mon-Sat 8:30am-4:30pm, Sun closed. A former sugar estate owned by Alexander Hamilton, the track was designed by Bartolomeo Vicens-Oliver and was destined to change hands many times over the years until it eventually went bankrupt in the late 1980s.
The Government stepped in in 1989, forming Caymanas Track Ltd. (CTL) to oversee the 196-acre plant and its assets. Under the chairmanship of Danny Melville, improvements were made, including the installation of a multimillion-dollar totaliser system and the implementation of the claiming system a different type of racing that involved a computerised off-track betting system. An audio-visual microwave network for the corporate area was also established, and to add to the excitement, more exotic bets were made available to horse bettors.
In March 1990, CTL began to show Simulcast Racing from Florida and has since expanded to include New York, California, Arizona, and Philadelphia, among other locations. In 1994, CTL expanded to Britain and in 2000, to Australia.
Today, Caymanas Track Limited counts the following associations: The Jockey Club of Jamaica, The Jamaica Racehorse Owners and Trainers Associations, The Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association of Jamaica, The Jockeys Association of Jamaica, The Grooms Association of Jamaica, and The Bookmakers and Independent Bookmakers Associations.
