Boxing summed up in a nutshell

The sport of boxing involves two fighters (one against the other) whose goal is to either knock out the other fighter (known as a KO) or score more points than the other fighter by landing more punches throughout the rounds. A knock-out occurs when a fighter is knocked to the ground and cannot return to their feet within ten seconds.

The matches are set up in rounds which are usually a no more than a few minutes each and there can be up to 12 rounds per match or more depending on the structure. If both fighters make it to the end of the match without a knock out the decision goes to a judging panel who will determine the winner based on who scored the most points by landing the most punches on their opponent in the match.

Bet on Boxing Odds

There is always a fight you right around the corner on in the boxing world. With four major sanctioning bodies, nearly 20 weight classes, and thousands of fighters all over the world, you’ll never have a shortage of options as a gambler.

It’s hard to believe that as early as 1970, betting on boxing was more popular than betting on the NFL. Years of bad judges, favorable matchmaking and the fact that there are a million belts have turned many away from the sport. The sport’s popularity has waned over the years, and megastars are harder to come by these days.

But that shouldn’t slow you down there’s money to be made. Because mismatches are so common, it’s actually quite easy to net a return on great fighters, but you’ll have to put up a lot to win a little. Let’s take a look at the most common bets you can make.

Boxing Moneyline Bets

Every boxing match starts with the money line. Basically, you’re picking a fighter to win or whether the bout ends in a draw. Below is an example of a sportsbook listing:

  • Muhammad Ali -250
  • Mike Tyson +300
  • Draw +3000

In this scenario, the sportsbook favors Ali you’d need to wager $250 to win $100. But if you had a gut feeling that Tyson would win, then you’d only need to bet $100 to win $300. In the rare case of a draw, a winning $100 bet would net you $3000. Leading sportsbooks like BookMaker Sportsbook uses this money line format for all upcoming boxing bouts.

Be aware that money lines are subject to change based on the action from gamblers. If a flood of bets come in on Tyson, the sportsbook’s response would be to me bring Tyson’s line down from +300. This is an attempt to spread out the action so sportsbook doesn’t take too large a hit because of one outcome.

If you’re a savvy gambler, you’ll always keep track of money lines and lock in your bets early. In the example above, there’d probably be a large number of players who would Tyson’s money line as the underdog. Therefore, it’d be in your favorite to make a bet as soon as possible to protect yourself from swings. Betting $100 to win $300 is a lot better than betting the same amount to win $220, don’t you think?

Over/Under Boxing Round Bet

The second most popular bet besides the money is the over/under. All you’re doing is betting on whether or not a fight ends before or after a certain number of rounds. Let’s set an over/under for our fictional Ali-Tyson fight above:

  • Over 9.5 rounds -150
  • Under 9.5 rounds +120

The sportsbook obviously feels that there’s a great chance that the fight goes over 9.5 rounds, because it’s the more expensive bet at -150. You’ll need to wager $150 to win $100. Conversely, a $100 winning bet on the under would pay out $120.

Betting On The Method Of Victory

Think Tyson would beat Ali? Are you sure that Tyson would knock him out? You can bet on that too. Betting on the method of victory is one of the most popular bets in boxing.

  • Mike Tyson by Stoppage +110
  • Mike Tyson by Points +140
  • Muhammad Ali by Stoppage +200
  • Muhammad Ali by Points -190

Because this goes beyond just picking a guy to win, you’ll often get better payouts with Method of Victory bets than just moneyline picks.

Boxing Prop Bets

With high profile bouts, you’ll often get a wide selection or special bets, or boxing prop bets. These range from picking which round a boxer will go down, picking a group of rounds when you think the fight will end and more.

If it’s a big fight, the more boxing prop bets there will be. These are generally made available after the moneylines and round totals are set. Often, special bets won’t even appear until a few days before a fight. Make sure you tune into to BookMaker.eu to keep track of all the bets you can make.

Live Betting: Many bookmakers offer live betting on boxing matches, which enables bettors to bet while the fight is in progress. Live betting odds often provide a greater variety of betting options than regular antepost boxing betting lines.

Boxing Betting Strategy

Research on your boxer is probably the best strategy we can give you on this site. It is a good idea to know your boxer before you throw your money down. The easy part about it is that you only have to study two players and not entire teams as in other sporting events.

Below are some other helpful tips on betting to win.

Boxing Styles: Knowing what type of boxer you are betting on is important. Info like who has greater endurance can really help your odds.

Previous Fights: If the boxers have fought before, who won and by how much is a good deciding factor on who to bet on.

Injuries: It’s a pretty obvious one but you have to know if there are any underling injures that might plague a match.

Similar Opponents: It’s good to cross-reference how the boxers did against similar opponents.

Compare Odds: Boxing odds can differ from sportsbook to sportsbook. Because of this it would be of great value for you to compare the odds before placing your bet. That’s why betting online is so great is you can compare your games to other sports books from the comfort of your own home.
