When: Saturday, December 23, 12 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Where: Legion Field, Birmingham, AL
Who: Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. South Florida Bulls
Apparently, a bowl bid in the Birmingham Bowl is enough to let Kliff Kingsbury keep his job for one more season. These middling 6-6 years aren't generally good enough for coaches in power conferences to keep their jobs, but a rebuilding effort is set to happen in the post-Nic Shimonek era, and Kingsbury is going to be the man to lead the charge.
In fairness to Kingsbury, the Red Raiders pulled out a huge comeback victory in Austin against hated Texas just to get to 6-6. Had that game been lost, Kingsbury surely would have been let gone.
Still, after a 3-0 start to the year, wins were really hard to come by. Kansas and Baylor were given victories, but it was the game against Texas that had to be won when opportunities against the likes of West Virginia, Iowa State and Kansas State were lost.
South Florida was disrespected all year long. The Bulls were always serious contenders for the New Year's Six, and in the end, they might have gotten there had they beaten UCF on Black Friday. Instead, that game was lost, and that effectively ended the hopes of going to a great bowl game.
Charlie Strong did a great job in his first season in Tampa, though. He guided the team to 30+ points in each of the first seven games of the season, helping break the FBS record for consecutive games scoring 30+ before losing to Houston. Still, to go through the whole campaign and suffer just two one-score losses at the hands of the Cougars and Knights is impressive.
Opening Line: South Florida -2
Preview: Two high scoring offenses will take the field on Saturday, December 23 in the Birmingham Bowl, as the Texas Tech Red Raiders face the South Florida Bulls. About the only thing that Texas Tech can do under head coach Cliff Kingsbury is score, as they average 34.3 points per game, while the Bulls are even more prolific, as they average 38.3 points per contest. Oddsmakers may have made a mistake on the total for this game, as it opened at 64.5 and has been bet up to 67. Continue...
