As college football season starts to wind down, it's time to turn our attention to college hoops and get ready for the fun five months that is the NCAA basketball season.
We've yet to hit the real nitty-gritty of the college basketball season, but teams are already laying the foundation for high seeds in the dance.
If March Madness started today, the clearly favorite would be Duke. We're a little surprised the Blue Devils aren't heavier favorites than +375 at this stage of the season, though of course, the NCAA Tournament format lends itself to all sorts of trouble for favorites. Still, Coach K's crew has been almost unstoppable this year. The Blue Devils laughed off a challenge from a Michigan State team that is clearly the second-best team in America at +425, and they've crushed every other comer en route to a 10-0 start.
Marvin Bagley III and Grayson Allen are making a formidable offensive duo, and there aren't many teams in the land who will be able to score with these two.
Beyond Duke and MSU, Villanova and Wichita State are both positioning themselves for top seeds, too.
The Wildcats are +1200 to win a second National Championship in three years, and not surprisingly, they're riding their veterans to victories. Jalen Brunson has been here and done this before, and adding grad transfer Phil Booth is only helping out the team. We know that Jay Wright can coach, making Villanova a tough team to oust in the dance.
Wichita State has been given the shaft by the Selection Committee plenty of times over the course of the last few years. This year, they should be in fine shape playing in the AAC instead of the Missouri Valley.
The Shockers are battle-tested now, as they've gone on the road and beaten a really good Baylor team that is 75 to 1 in its own right to win the natty. Wichita State is experienced and can shoot threes with anyone in America. A price of 16 to 1 might seem low, but we think there's a good chance this team is donning a No. 1 seed when the brackets are released in a few months.
Michigan State +425
North Carolina +1600
Wichita State +1600
Texas A&M +2800
Notre Dame +4000
St. Mary's +6000
West Virginia +6000
Seton Hall +7000
